Shocking Prices : Examining the short-run price elasticity of household electricity demand

Eliasson Rabo, Klara January 2022 (has links)
As the share of renewable and intermittent energy sources grow and as society becomes more electrified, electricity price volatility becomes one of the most pressing issues. The flexibility of household demand, when faced with price shocks, determines how exposed they will be to price volatility, making the estimation of their short-run price elasticity highly relevant for policymakers. The elasticity was estimated for the hourly demand, the daily demand, and the weekly demand using a difference in difference setup. All estimated elasticities were between -0.10 and -0.19, with the elasticity of hourly demand being the smallest and the elasticity of weekly demand being largest. This implies that household demand is very inelastic but grows in the longer run, even when the longer run is rather short. The elasticity differs between electricity pricing areas. The largest estimated elasticity was in the area which experienced the greatest price shock.

Labor Input Elasticity, Employment Outcomes, and Occupation Segregation

Shahiri, Hazrul Izuan January 2012 (has links)
The first chapter of this thesis studies the effect of labor unions on the elasticity of substitution between production inputs in several transportation industries such as railroad, postal service and air transportation. The elasticity is derived from two different methods: the CES production function and the translog cost function. This study finds that labor unions lower the flexibility to substitute between labor and capital in the air transportation industry. The second chapter estimates the effect of using internet job search on labor market outcomes. This study uses a Cox Proportional Hazard Model to find the effect of internet job search on unemployment duration. Further, a generalized Oaxaca wage decomposition is employed to explore a difference in wages received between internet job searchers and non-internet job searchers. The results show that internet job search is associated with higher education. However, there is no evidence that internet job search shortens unemployment duration of the job searchers. Finally, internet job searchers obtain slightly lower wages than non-internet job searchers. The last chapter in this dissertation studies the effect of New Economy Policy (NEP) on ethnics' economics gap in Malaysia. Specifically, this chapter estimates a degree of occupational segregation before and after NEP between ethnic Malays and Chinese, between ethnic Malaya and Indians, and between ethnic Chinese and Indians by using the Duncan Dissimilarity Index. In addition, this study also estimates a generalized Oaxaca wage decomposition between these ethnic groups before and after NEP. This study finds that NEP managed to reduce occupational segregation between all ethnic groups. However, all ethnic wage gaps continued to rise after 1986.

Linkin' Parts

Johansson, Carolina January 2016 (has links)
This work aims to explore the linking of bodyparts and the internal interaction of material, body and motion in order to establish a new relationship between body and dress. The common system in construction of dress is based on an absent body, consequently dividing it into predetermined pieces, where the parts of the body are being isolated from eachother. With the intention of challenging those fixed structures, the work proposes a change of order in dress through a change of practice when investigating the linking possibilities within the body. Based on the elasticity of the moving body and the haptic perception, in terms of constructing directly on the own body, the work presents a series of examples which connects and compose dress from new positions of the body. This should be considered a contribution to what is perceived as dress and bridging the gap in the lacking discussion between body and dress.
