Nuclear lifetime measurement of the 344-KeV level of 152GdKing, John J. 03 June 2011 (has links)
A delayed-coincidence timing spectrometer system was used to experimentally measure the lifetime of the 344-keV level of 152 64Gd by means of the self comparison technique. A major objective of the study was to determine the effectiveness of a NaI(Tl)-plastic detector assembly for energy spectrum reconstruction when measuring the lifetime of a level in a complex nuclear decay scheme. The experimentally measured mean life was 38 ± 5 psec. This result does not agree with two previously reported values of 76 psec. It was concluded that gamma-ray energy misidentification was primarily responsible for the disagreement. Correction factors would have to be applied to the experimental data is such a system is to be effective in a nuclear decay scheme study which involves many gamma rays.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 47306

Thesis (MScEng (Electrical and Electronic Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2005. / Due to the expensive nature of high frequency measurements in the EMC (Electromagnetic
Compatability) field, more affordable methods of measurement instrumentation and
environments are investigated. Different calibration methods for an Automatic Network
Analyser (ANA) are evaluated against each other to determine the most cost-effective
method of calibration. The mathematics for all the calibration methods are used in
MATLAB programs which perform the error-calculation and correction which is usually
done by the ANA software. These programs can be used to develop a simplified homebuilt
ANA at reduced cost. The MATLAB program calibrations are compared to actual
ANA calibrations to determine accuracy. Different measurement environments are considered
as well to decide on a best compromise between cost and accuracy. To achieve this
a reverberation chamber was built in which measurements were done and compared to
measurements done on an Open Area Test Site. The Device Under Test was a standard
radiator constructed specifically for such measurements. The development of both the
radiator and the reverberation chamber are discussed and all the measurement results are
considered in this thesis.

As part of a project to study internal waves, FAU plans to utilize an AUV to tow a magnetometer to study electromagnetic signatures from internal waves. This research is focused on the electromagnetic noise issues related to using an AUV to tow the magnetic sensor package. There are active sources of electromagnetic noise caused by an AUV that are present in addition to those induced by the Earth's magnetic field and permanent magnets. To characterize the magnetic noise associated with the AUV magnetometer tow system, the various active source elements were identified, the orientation sensitivity of the sensors being used was determined, and the magnetic anomaly of a similar AUV which may be eventually be used in a magnetic sensing arrangement was measured. Simulating the dynamic interaction of an AUV and towed magnetometerUnknown Date (has links)
A magnetometer with a sensitivity of 0.01nT will be towed through the thermocline by a 2.87 meter long, 0.533 meter diameter autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) to measure the magnetic fluctuations generated by oceanic internal waves. At this point, no research has been found that suggests towed magnetometer measurements have been done using an AUV. Simulations of the AUV, tow cable, and towfish are performed to provide an understanding of the effects of changing different input parameters, such as towing speed (0.5-2m/s), cable length (5-15m), vehicle trajectory (circle and vertical zig zag maneuvers), and current (0.25-1.25m/s). The AUV-cabletowfish system and equations of motion needed for the simulations are described herein. Results show that a 5m tow cable provides better towfish maneuvering than the longer cable lengths. High towfish pitch angle is decreased by decreasing the distance between CG and CB.
