Rx for economic inequality: the wage-gap among men and women in health professions

Barlow, Heather R. 05 1900 (has links)
The purpose of the research is to examine the wage-gap that occurs among men and women working in health professions. The data used for this research is drawn from the 2004 Current Population Survey (CPS). Data analysis reveals that there is a 61% wage-gap that occurs among men and women in health professions. / Thesis (M.A.)--Wichita State University, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Dept. of Sociology.

Experiments on vortex energy recovery by favourable interference between wing and shrouded fan

Man, Sek Ong 12 1900 (has links)
Wind tunnel tests were conducted to investi gate t he effect of placing a propulsion fan behind the tip of a li.tting ring for the purpose of recovering the energy in the trailing vortex. Results indicated tha~ significant increase of thrust could be obtained as a result of vortex energy recovery. In addition, the pre-swirling effect provided b.r the vortex allowed the tan to absorb more power and develop more thrust at a lower rotational speed. / Thesis (M.S.)--Wichita State University, Dept. of Aeronautical Engineering.

Effects of the 12-week WellREP exercise program on functional fitness in older women

Slimmer, Mindy Lynn 05 1900 (has links)
Persuading people to adopt and maintain a regular physical activity program are two major challenges facing public health. Providing social support may increase the adoption and adherence rate of participation in exercise programs. It was hypothesized that participation in a 12-week WellREP designed to meet the goals of the ACSM and CDC with respect to appropriate physical activity programming for older adults would result in improvements in functional fitness, balance, and daily activity. The WellREP group consisted of 18 older women (X= 73 ± 7 yrs). The WellREP group met at a senior center for 12 wk, 2d•wk for a 50 min. training program and used an Omron pedometer to measure daily physical activity throughout the week. The Control group consisted of 15 older adults (X= 75 ± 6 yrs). Program effectiveness was assessed using the Senior Fitness Test to measure functional fitness (chair stand, arm curl, sit and reach, up & go, scratch test, and 12-min walk), balance: movement velocity, endpoint excursion, maximum endpoint excursion, and directional control for forward, right, left and back movements, pedometer measured daily physical activity, and weight. No differences between the WellREP group and the control group existed at baseline. All functional measures, excluding flexibility, in the WellREP group exhibited an 8% to 46% significant increases as compared to a -3% to 8% change in the CON group. Significant improvements in limits of stability measures were only observed in the maximum excursion measure (forward - 20% and backward - 23%). Significant improvements were observed in daily physical activity. Participants in the WellREP group increased their STEPS by 64% compared to a 5% increase in the CON group. / Thesis (M.A.)--Wichita State University, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Program of Gerontology.

Flow obstructions in valley glaciers

Caruso, Raven, University of Lethbridge. Faculty of Arts and Science January 2007 (has links)
Valley glaciers often occur within complex dendritic systems where tributary glaciers contribute ice mass and blocking potential to the trunk glacier. Analysis of glacier inventories and maps in the regions of Svalbard, East Greenland, Yukon Territory and the Thompson Glacier system indicates that trunk - tributary intersections commonly occur at angles between 45° and 90°. An analogue material with flow properties similar to creep in pure ice has been used to simulate flow in a model valley glacier. The model and a series of blockages were constructed based on dimensions derived from the inventory and map analysis. The angled blockage indicates lower overall velocity rates and appears to have a funnelling rather than blocking affect on the analogue material. The perpendicular obstruction that blocked half the width of the model valley caused a piling up of analogue material prior to a release into the unobstructed side of the valley. / ix, 149 leaves : ill. ; 29 cm.

An illustrative phenomenographic case study : charting the landscape of "public understanding of science"

D'Amour, Lissa M, University of Lethbridge. Faculty of Education January 2008 (has links)
A cross-disciplinary literature review returns conflicting renditions on the nature of science, science’s place in society, and the public understanding of science. The phenomenon of science appears as many things to many people—a situation consistent with a phenomenographic non-dualist ontology that accepts a single, but variably experienced, real world. This study begins a process for comprehensively charting the landscape of Public Understanding of Science. In foregrounding the reflexive interplay of science and society, the resultant typography of science could, in turn, inform a mindful evolution of science curricula. In this study, a phenomenographic analysis of Public Understanding of Science journal article, “Fantastically reasonable: Ambivalence in the representation of science and technology in super-hero comics” (Locke, 2005) illustrates the phenomenographic process and provides a model for the application of phenomenographic methodology to systematically chart the nature of science as publicly experienced and understood. / x, 225 leaves ; 29 cm. --

Cyclophanes from kinetically stabilized bis(isobenzofuran)s

Robbins, Steven Joseph, University of Lethbridge. Faculty of Arts and Science January 2009 (has links)
Isobenzofurans (IBF)s are interesting molecules with regards to their structure and reactivity. The properties of these compounds are investigated through the use of gas phase calculations and kinetic studies. This work provides insight into the aromatic character of IBF and how substituents affect IBF’s reactivity. Substituted derivatives of naphtho[1,2-c:5,6-c]difuran are synthesized and reacted with tethered bis(dienophile)s to form cyclophanes. Phenyl-substituted naphtho[1,2-c5,6-c]difuran forms only a single isomer when reacted with a tethered bis(acrylate) and a tert-butyldimethylsilyl-substituted derivative exhibits higher selectivity towards cyclophane formation rather than polymer formation. Evidence for strong intramolecular interactions within these cyclophanes is presented as well. A five-step synthesis of anthra[1,2-c:7,8-c]difuran is developed, although with a poor overall yield. Similar reaction conditions could be applied to the synthesis of anthra[1,2-c:5,6-c]difuran. We also propose the synthesis of two different aromatic belts from these compounds. / xxii, 122 leaves : ill. ; 29 cm.

Intertwinings for full orchestra: a composition

Svast, Maja 05 1900 (has links)
Intertwinings is written for full orchestra, and is in one continuous movement. It takes as its subject certain aspects from human nature. The human nature is very complex. Sometimes people project extroverted actions, while at the same time disguising their inner thoughts and emotions. This work consists of three main themes, which represent three different characters. These themes first appear alone and then later in combination. They clash together producing positive and negative emotions that culminate with all three of them erupting together towards the end of the piece (beginning at measure 298 until the end). The piece ends abruptly leaving the questions unanswered. / Instrumentation -- Program notes and analysis -- Intertwinings / Thesis (M.M.)--Wichita State University, College of Fine Arts, School of Music
