Abstract: The storage of solar energy in a non conventional hygroscopic material and its influence as part of an "in-bin" corn drying system was studied in this work. Using pine boards as the hygroscopic material, rectangular ducts through which the processing air flowed were built. With this geometrical arrangement, a hygroscopic solar storage system was experimentally used to study the drying and humidification as a function of air conditions . The remaining characteristical properties of both the timber and the system geometrical configuration, on which drying and humidification processes also depend, were also found. A mathematical model was used for the simultaneous heat and mass transfer between the wall of the wooden duct and the air flowing through it. The answer of the energy storage system to a delivery cycle was studied through simulation in function of the duct length and the speed of the circulating air. The study showed that only a part of the stored energy can be used, and that for the same length of the ducts, the lower the speed of the air, the larger the portion of useful stored energy that can be obtained. Since the energy storage capacity of the system is a function of operational conditions, a maximum value of 117 Kcal/Kg dry wood was found. The following three "in-bin" corn drying systems were considered: natural air, air heated by a solar collector and air conditioned by stored solar energy. The influence of storage system on the corn drying process was evaluated by a simulation study. The operation time and the grain moisture gradient through the bin, were compared for each of the above-corn drying systems. Under simulation conditions 198, 141 and 168 hours of operation were necessary to attain the average grain moisture content of 15,0% in each of the above drying systems, respectively. The stored solar energy system presented the best grain moisture gradient. Under the same conditions to attain a grain moisture content of 15,0% in the top layer of the bin, 259, 206 and 25 2 hours of operation were necessary, respectively, for the three different systems. In the stored solar energy system the moisture gradient was insignificant. The other systems presented a considerable moisture gradient and the lower layers were overdried. / Mestrado / Mestre em Engenharia Agrícola
