The Influence of dietary energy levels on subcutaneous fatty acid profiles and meat quality in sheep

Webb, E.C. (Edward Cottington) January 1992 (has links)
This study investigated the effect of nutritional energy levels on meat quality characteristics, through effects on the fatty acid profiles of the subcutaneous fat in sheep. Two rations containing 11. 76MJ ME/kg DM and 10 .18MJ ME/kg DM were fed to Dorper and SA Mutton Merino wethers from respectively 20.51 ± 2.51kg and 22.30 ± 3.99kg to 25, 31, 37 and 43kg live mass. M.longissimus lumborum samples were removed and a trained taste panel evaluated sensory parameters on a lOcm unstructured scale. Subcutaneous fat samples and plasma samples were collected, and various carcass measurements were taken. It was found that high energy nutrition significantly increased the concentration of unsaturated fatty acids in the subcutaneous adipose tissue, with subsequent effects on the fat quality and sensory properties of lamb. Both the aroma and incipient juiciness of taste samples from wethers on the high energy treatment were noticeably improved, while the increased amount of fat, coupled with its poor consistency significantly impaired the overall acceptability of taste samples. / Dissertation (MSc Agric)--University of Pretoria, 1992. / gm2014 / Animal and Wildlife Sciences / Unrestricted

The Beta Decay of 105Ru

Schriber, Stanley Owen 10 1900 (has links)

Twenty-two energy levels of 105Ru populated in the beta decay of 105Ru have been determined. The internal conversion coefficients of the eighteen strongest transitions were measured using a magnetic spectrometer and were used to obtain their multipole assignments. The energies and intensities of seventy gamma rays were measured using germanium detectors and scintillation counters. Gamma-gamma and beta-gamma coincidence measurements carried out with magnetic spectrometers, NaI(Tl) and Ge(Li) detectors were used with these energy measurements to establish a decay scheme. An interpretation of the decay scheme in the light of current nuclear models was attempted.
/ Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

PERIODIC TRENDS IN STRUCTURE FUNCTION RELATIONSHIP OF ORGANIC HETEROACENES

Grimminger, Marsha Loth 01 January 2011 (has links)
Our group has previously shown that small changes to molecular structure result in large changes to device properties and stability in organic electronic applications. By functionalizing aromatic heteroacenes with group 14 and group 16 elements, it is possible to control morphology and improve stability for a variety of applications such as thin film transistors and solar cells. Functionalization within the heteroacene core led to changes in electronic structure as observed by electrochemistry and light absorption. By substituting down the periodic table, the carbon heteroatom bond length increased, leading to subtle changes in crystal packing. Absorption maxima were red-‐shifted and stability to light decreased. Substitution of group 14 elements to the solubilizing ethynyl groups attached to the heteroacene also had an effect on crystallization and stability. Substitution of silicon with carbon decreased solubility as well as stability to light. Substitution with germanium also decreased stability to light, but close contacts within the crystal structure and solubility in nonpolar organic solvents increased.
