Mapeamento geológico-geotécnico do núcleo urbano central do município de Ilhabela - SP /

Diniz, Tales de Deus. January 2015 (has links)
The urbanization process in Brazil occurs mainly in a non-ordered way, not considering properly the potentials and limitations of the physical environment, what results in a form of urban development that may expose the population and the urban equipment to external geological processes such as floods and mass movements. It happens in Ilhabela-SP, where the high rates of population growth, combined with its rough topography, increase this issue, highlighting the need of an adequate orientation to the urban expansion. In this context, the geological-geotechnical maps happen to be appropriate tools for the planning of the urban expansion in the physical environment. So the aim of this research is the geological-geotechnical mapping of the most densely urbanized area of Ilhabela, through the integrated analysis of the region's aerial images. The photo analysis and photo interpretation, combined with field data, subsidized the section and classification of the study area in geological-geotechnical units that show similar morphological and geotechnical properties. This procedure resulted in the identification of geological-geotechnical units, which were represented in 3 scales, each with a different level of details (1:50.000, 1:20.000, 1:10.000), and accompanied of profiles and description tables containing its physical and land use characteristics and main acting processes, besides the representation of its alteration profile and characteristic relief. The products obtained allowed a wide ranged comprehension of the island's physical environment characteristics, as well as the main conditioning aspects of it's human occupation, so happening to be useful tools that are appropriate to the urban planning of the archipelago city / Mestre

Coelho, Juliano Oliveira Martins. January 2015 (has links)
Abstract: The instability of natural and built slopes is a recurrent problem on the plateaus of Serra do Mar, fostering a diversity of studies concerning slope instability. The road works installed on these plateaus present recurrent geotechnical problems, involving accelerated erosions and mass movements on cut slopes. The geological and geotechnical studies can be applied to conservation of already installed works and to plan future ones, contributing to the reduction of road maintenance costs and avoiding the development of mass movements that may limit or prevent the vehicles traffic, put road users at risks and cause significant environmental impacts. This research presents a systematic geological and geotechnical mapping with progressive detailing, in regional scale (1:250.000), semi detailed scale (1:100.000) and detailed scale (1:10.000), conducted from photo interpretation techniques allied to field works, aiming to evaluate the susceptibility of the physical environment to the development of instabilities on cut slopes of road projects. The mapping systematic here presented mainly considered the properties: frangibility, entropy, slope form, top form, valley form, declivity, altimetry, pattern and density of drainage, allowing infer the geotechnical behavior of the constituent materials of the mapped compartments. The structural lineaments were also mapped, allowing the analysis of the structural conditioners of road slopes instability, showing themselves important indicators of the geometrical relations between the discontinuities of rock masses and the slope faces. The largest convergences of unfavorable evidences to slope stability were indentified in the Paraitinga and Natividade provinces, in the Pt2, Pt1, Nt2 e Pb zones, in the I, IV, V, VI e VIII unities and in the sectors where the structural lineaments intercept the road route, representing parallel, oblique or perpendicular discontinuities to the cut slopes. Unsaturated flow through permeable pavements : an experimental study

Van Vuuren, Hein January 2019 (has links)
Permeable Interlocking Concrete Pavements (PICP) have seen increased popularity in the principles of Water Sensitive Urban Design and Sustainable Drainage Systems in recent years. To address certain design queries that still existed in industry, a two-year experimental study was conducted. It entailed the construction of an Infiltration Table Apparatus and subjecting a representative volume of PICP to hydraulic testing within it. The study aimed at determining the controls of the flow of water into and through these pavements, the effect of variations in construction materials and incline on them, the validity of the hydraulic testing methods currently being applied to them in industry and lastly, to inform on their infiltration rates. A host of permeability data for PICP was gained and it was found that both the choice of materials and the incline on which PICP are constructed, can change their hydraulic properties drastically. In general, the selection of lower permeability materials in the surface portion of the layer works decreased the overall permeability of the pavement, while increases in inclines did the same. In addition, it was found that field investigation techniques require revision and further innovation before they can be effectively applied to PICP. / Dissertation (MSc)--University of Pretoria, 2019. / Bosun Brick (Pty) Ltd. / Geology / MSc / Unrestricted

Mineralogy and Engineering Properties of the Yazoo Clay Formation, Jackson Group, Central Mississippi

Taylor, Angela C 07 May 2005 (has links)
The Yazoo Clay is a calcareous fossiliferous mudrock that outcrops in a northwest-southeast belt across much of Mississippi and in adjacent states. Based on over 240 X-ray diffraction analyses, the average composition of the Yazoo Clay is 28% smectite, 24% kaolinite, 22% quartz, 15% calcite, 8% illite, 2% feldspar, and 1% gypsum. Exposed Yazoo clay is weathered to a depth of 30-40 ft. and has a distinctive yellow/brown color; unweathered Yazoo is blue/gray. In most wells, smectite is more abundant in weathered clay than in unweathered clay. Mineralogic changes correlate well with engineering properties of the samples, which in general show a decrease in plasticity indices with depth. Weathered Yazoo clay exhibits greater mineralogic variability than unweathered clay. Mineralogical content also varies laterally. Lateral variation, along with correlative smectite content and engineering properties, is the reason for ?roller coaster? roadways and structural damage caused by the swelling Yazoo Clay.
