Use of ultrasonic agitation in iron group alloy electrodepositions

The effects of ultrasonic agitation on deposition from two iron group alloy plating solutions, nickel-cobalt and bright nickel-iron, have been studied. Comparison has been made with deposits plated from the same solutions using controlled air agitation. The ultrasonic equipment employed had a fixed frequency of 13 KHz but the power output from each transducer was variable up to a maximum of 350 watts. The effects of air and ultrasonic agitation on hardness, ductility, tensile strength, composition, structure, surface topography, limiting current density, cathode current efficiency and macro-throwing power were determined. Transmission and scanning electron microscopy, electron-probe microanalysis and atomic absorption spectrophotometry have been employed to study the nickel alloy deposits produced. The results obtained show that the use of Ultrasonics increased significantly the hardness of both alloy deposits and altered their composition by decreasing the cobalt and iron contents from nickel-cobalt and nickeliron solutions respectively. The ductility of coatings improved but the tensile strength did not change very much. Ultrasonic agitation gave larger grained deposits than air and they seemed to have a lower stress. Dull cobalt-nickel deposits had a similar pyramidal surface topography regardless of the type of agitation but the bright appearance of the nickel-iron was destroyed by ultrasonic agitation; an unusual ribbed pattern was produced. The use of ultrasonic agitation permitted approximately a twofold increase in the plating current density at which sound deposits could be achieved but there was only a slight increase in cathode current efficiency. Macro-throwing power of the solutions was increased slightly by the use of ultrasonic agitation. ultrasonic agitation is an expensive means of agitating plating Solutions and would be worthwhile only if significant improvements in properties could be achieved. The simultaneous improvement in hardness and ductility is a novel feature that should have useful engineering applications.

Gas-metal reactions and porosity in the inert gas arc welding of copper

A study has been made of the effects of welding and material variables on the occurrence of porosity in tungsten inert gas arc welding of copper. The experiments were based on a statistical design and variables included, welding current, welding speed, arc atmosphere composition, inert gas flow rate, weld preparation, and base material. The extent of weld metal porosity was assessed by density measurement and its morphology by X-ray radiography and metallography. In conjunction with this the copper-steam reaction has been investigated under conditions of controlled atmosphere arc melting. The welding experiments have shown that the extent of steam porosity is increased by increased water vapour content of the arc atmosphere, increased oxygen content of the base material and decreased welding speed. The arc melting experiments have shown that the steam reaction occurs in the body of the weld pool and proceeds to an apparent equi1ibrium state appropriate to to its temperature, the hydrogen and oxygen being supplied by the dissociation of water vapour in the arc atmosphere. It has been shown conclusively that nitrogen porosity can occur in the tungsten inert gas arc welding of copper and that this porosity can be eliminated by using filler wires containing small amounts of aluminum and titanium. Since it has been shown to be much more difficult to produce sound butt welds than melt runs it has been concluded that the porosity associated with joint fit up is due to nitrogen entrained into tho arc atmosphere. Clearly atmospheric entrainment would also, to a much lesser extent, involve water vapour. From a practical welding point of view it has thus been postulated that use of a filler wire containing small amounts of aluminum and/or titanium would eliminate both forms of porosity since these elements are both strongJy deoxidising and denitriding.

Wear of abrasion resisting materials

The wear behaviour of a series of chromium containing white irons has been investigated under conditions of high stress grinding abrasion using a specimen on track abrasion testing machine. The measured abrasion resistance of the irons has been explained in terms of microstructure and hardness and with respect to the wear damage observed at and beneath abraded surfaces. During abrasion material removal occurred by cracking and detachment from the matrix of eutectic carbides as well as by penetration and micromachining effects of the abrasive grits being crushed at the wearing surface. Under the particular test conditions used martensitic matrix structures gave higher resistance to abrasion than austenitic or pearlitic. However, no simple relationship was found between general hardness or matrix microhardness at wear surfaces and abrasion resistance, and the test yielded pessimistic results for austenitic irons. The fine structures of the 15% Cr and 30% Cr alloys were studied by thin foil transmission electron microscopy. It was found that both the matrix and carbide constituents could be thinned for examination at 100 Kv using conventional dishing followed by ion beam thinning. Flany of the rodlike eutectic N7C3 carbides were seen to consist of clusters of scalier rods with individual 117C3 crystals quite often containing central cores of matrix constituent. 3oth eutectic and secondary N7C3 carbides were found to contain stacking faults on planes normal to the basal plane. In the eutectic carbides in the 30A Cr iron there was evidence of an in-situ PI7C3 C. transition which had taken place during the hardening heat treatment of this alloy. In the as-cast austenitic matrix iron strain induced martensite was produced at the wear surface contributing to work hardening. The significance of these findings have been discussed in relation to wear performance.
