Ziele der textlinguistisch-pragmatisch angelegten Arbeit sind einerseits die inhaltliche Darstellung der Stereotype, die Briten und Deutsche im Spiegel der überregionalen Printmedien voneinander haben, andererseits die Analyse der sprachlichen Mittel, mit deren Hilfe diese Stereotype ausgedrückt werden. Damit soll eine Stilistik stereotyper Ausdrucksformen erstellt werden, wobei Stereotype hier als versprachlichte Vorurteile gegenüber Mitgliedern einer Personengruppe aufgefasst werden. Da die Behauptung des Eigenen und die Abwehr des Fremden zwei untrennbare Aspekte der Gruppenidentität sind, werden Auto- und Heterostereotype in ihrem Bezug zueinander thematisiert, wodurch die Spiegelfunktion nationaler Stereotype sehr deutlich wird: Die Ergebnisse der Inhaltsanalyse und der thematischen Längs- und Querschnitte zeigen, dass die Nationenbilder weitgehend asymmetrisch strukturiert, ja über weite Strecken komplementär zueinander angelegt sind. Untersucht wird zudem, inwieweit sich die unterschiedlichen Zeitungstypen in ihrer Verwendung stereotyper Äußerungen unterscheiden. Anhand der Verteilung der Stereotype auf die Ressorts und Textsorten lassen sich schließlich Rückschlüsse auf die Funktionen dieser Strukturen in der Presse ziehen. / This study examines the national images of the British and the Germans as mirrored in the national press of the two countries. It considers the conceptual content of the stereotypes as well as the linguistic devices which are used to express these stereotypes. As stereotypes are discursive constructs, they have to be analysed in their discursive context by means of a textlinguistic-pragmatic approach. Stereotypes are defined as verbalised prejudices against members of a group of people. As identity and alterity are two inseparable aspects of group identity, auto-stereotypes and hetero-stereotypes have to be seen in their interdependence. Thus, it becomes very clear that the stereotypical representations of the Germans und the British act as mirror images: Both the content analysis of the press releases and the thematic case studies show the asymmetry of the in- and out-group identities; in large part, indeed, the images of the self and the other are complementary. The work also examines the differing ways in which stereotypes are presented in the various kinds of print media. Last but not least, inferences about the various functions of stereotypes in the press can be drawn from the relative frequencies of specific stereotypical expressions in different text types.
