Late Holocene environmental change in the Basin of Pátzcuaro, Michoacán, México

O'Hara, Sarah L. January 1996 (has links)
This thesis describes late Holocene environmental changes in the Basin of Pátzcuaro, Michoacán, Mexico. Using palaeolimnological evidence it is possible to conclude that the Basin of Pátzcuaro has suffered at least three episodes of disturbance within the last 3,600 years. A minor episode of erosion began about 3,500 years ago and is believed to have been triggered by the onset of sedentary agriculture within the basin. A second, more severe phase of disturbance, occurred between about 2,500 and 1,200 years B.P. during which time there was extensive degradation in the northern part of the catchment; widespread gullying is believed to have occurred at this time. The recent, most intense period of erosion began about 850 years B.P., coinciding with the arrival of the Purépecha in the basin. There is no evidence to suggest that degradation within the catchment intensified after the arrival of the Spanish 470 years B.P. However, a change in the style of erosion from predominantly sheet-wash to gully erosion occurred at approximately 400-500 years B.P. and may reflect the introduction of new agricultural techniques by the Spanish. Fluctuations in the level of Lake Pátzcuaro have been used to infer late Holocene climatic change. Prior to 4,000 years B.P. dry conditions prevailed. An abrupt change to wetter conditions occurred between about 3,600 and 3,200 years B.P. before becoming more arid. Wetter conditions between 2,500 and 1,200 years B.P. can be inferred from the lake sediment record. The driest period in the record occurred between 1,200 and 850 B.P. Fluctuations in the level of the lake over the last 600 years have been determined from historical records. The lake rose between 600 and 470 years B.P. and remained high until approximately 300 years B.P. after which time the lake level fell once again.

Nástroje ochrany životního prostředí v českém právu / Environmental protection instruments in Czech law

Sluka, Jakub January 2014 (has links)
This diploma thesis is focused on the methods used for protecting the environment, which can be found in Czech legislation. Mentioned methods are those, which are used to prevent further deterioration of the environment. Particular groups of these methods create a system, where the methods support and complement each other. To the methods used for protecting the environment belong ordinary methods as well, however, only the legal methods are introduced in this thesis. In addition to dividing the methods into legal and ordinary, these methods are further divided into direct and indirect, general and special. The group of the legal methods consists of conceptual, administrative- legal, economic and vindicatory methods. Conceptual methods are direct and include various plans, programmes or conceptions. Administrative- legal methods are directly effective as well and include commands, restrictions, permissions, standpoints, expressions, standards and limits. Economic methods are indirect and consist of taxes, fees, tax benefits, loans etc. Vindicatory methods are direct and they are related to the application of tort liability and responsibility for environmental damage.

Promoting Pro-Environmental Behavior : An Investigation of the cross-cultural environmental behavior patterns. The Case of Abu Dhabi

Willuweit, Lars January 2009 (has links)

In response to the rapidly growing global environmental problems many call for changes in how individuals should deal with the environment. An important aspect of moving towards an environmentally sustainable world is to promote pro-environmental consumer behavior. Against this background, the purpose of this study is to conduct a literature review to identify social and psychological factors that influence environmental behavior and use these as a basis for an empirical study in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, for analyzing current behavioral patterns between population groups. The findings suggest that willingness to sacrifice for the environment, perceived behavioral control of environmental problems and the feeling of responsibility of environmental problems are significantly positively related to environmental behavior in Abu Dhabi. It was evaluated that younger age groups, very low and very high income groups, people from developing nations and low education groups are performing worse in environmental behavior than older age groups, middle income groups, people from developed nations and high education groups. Furthermore, it was concluded that the general level of environmental behavior is low. This is ascribed to a lack of facilities supporting environmental behavior in Abu Dhabi, and a lack of environmental values in the country. Policies aimed at promoting environmental behavior should aim at changing the attitudes and values regarding the environment of the society. Such policies should be tailored for specific population segments.
