The focus of the research are leaders who understand the inherited phenomenon in the managing context. Hence, the formal leadership, the aspects approached at the theoretical reference included the concepts of the Environmental Managing System, its nature and logic. We intended, from that discussion, to understand the principles and rules that guide the implementation and maintenance of the system. Next, we discourse about leadership thematic: contextualization, concepts and delimitation. The methodological course used was basic qualitative research through a study of case. The empiric ways were collected throughout semi structured interviews with 16 leaders of Verdegreen Hotel. For the reading of the results, we used instruments and techniques of the discourse analysis. The research analyzed the operational roles of the leaders of the Environmental Managing System among five steps: Environmental policy, Implementation and Operation, Verification and Corrective action and Critical Analysis by the high administration. In synthesis, supported by Peter Senge theories, we identified three roles practiced by the leaders who overcome their operational work. They are: the leader as a designer, the leader as a teacher and the leader as a conductor. / O presente estudo analisa o papel do líder no processo de aprendizagem, implementação e manutenção do Sistema de Gestão Ambiental da organização Verdegreen Hotel. O foco da pesquisa são os líderes que compreendem o fenômeno intrínseco ao contexto da gestão. Portanto, a liderança formal. Os tópicos abordados no referencial teórico envolveram os conceitos de Sistema de Gestão Ambiental, sua natureza e lógica. Pretendeu-se, a partir da discussão, compreender os princípios e diretrizes que regem a implementação e manutenção desse sistema. Em seguida, versamos sobre a temática liderança: contextualização, conceitos e delimitações. O percurso metodológico adotado foi a pesquisa qualitativa básica, por meio do estudo de caso. Os meios empíricos foram coletados através de entrevistas semiestruturadas com 16 líderes do Verdegreen Hotel. Para a interpretação dos resultados, utilizou-se de instrumentos e técnicas da análise do discurso. A pesquisa analisou os papéis operacionais dos líderes no Sistema de Gestão Ambiental através de cinco etapas: Política ambiental, Planejamento, Implementação e operação, Verificação e ação corretiva e Análise crítica pela alta administração. Os resultados desse estudo apontam que os líderes do Verdegreen Hotel exercem três papeis que transpassam suas funções operacionais. São eles: o líder como designer, o líder como professor e o líder como guia.
