Dynamic equivalencing of distribution network with embedded generation

Renewable energy generation will play an important role in solving the climate change problem. With renewable electricity generation increasing, there will be some significant changes in electric power systems, notably through smaller generators embedded in the distribution network. Historically insignificant volumes of Embedded Generation (EG) mean that traditionally it has been treated by the transmission system operator as negative load, with its impact on the dynamic behaviour of power systems neglected. However, with the penetration level increasing, EG would start to influence the dynamics and stability of the transmission network. Hence the dynamic behaviour of distribution network cannot be neglected any more. In most cases, a detailed distribution network model is not always available or necessary for the study of transmission network dynamics and stability. Thus a dynamic equivalent model of the distribution network that keeps its essential dynamic behavior, is required. Most existing dynamic equivalencing methods are based on the assumption that the detailed information of the complete power system is known. Dynamic equivalencing methods based on coherency of the machines have been applied to transmission networks but cannot be applied to distribution networks due to their radial structure. Hence an alternative methodology has been developed in this project to derive the dynamic equivalent model of the distribution network using system identification, without the detailed information of the distribution network necessarily known. Case studies have been accomplished in PSS/E on a model of the Scottish transmission network with the distribution network in Dumfries and Galloway. Embedded generation with a certain penetration level in either conventional generation or DFIG wind generation has been added to the model of the distribution network. The dynamic equivalent models of the distribution network are compared with the original distribution network model using a series of indicators. A constant power model has also been involved in the comparison to illustrate the advantage of using the dynamic equivalent to represent the distribution network. The results suggest that a proper dynamic equivalent model derived using this methodology may have better agreement to the original power system dynamic response than constant power equivalent. A discussion on factors that influence the performance of the dynamic equivalent model, is given to indicate the proper way to use this methodology. The major advantage of the dynamic equivalencing methodology developed in this project is that it can potentially use the time series obtained from measurements to derive the dynamic equivalent models without knowing detailed information on the distribution network. The derived dynamic equivalent, in a simple spate-space form, can be implemented in commercial simulation tools, such as PSS/E.

Etude d'un système non linéaire à chocs sous excitation large bande : application à un tube de générateur de vapeur / Study of a nonlinear system with shocks under broadband excitation : application to a steam generator tube

Le générateur de vapeur a un rôle d’échangeur thermique et de sûreté nucléaire. L’énergie du fluide primaire est transférée au circuit secondaire via un faisceau de tubes en U soutenus par des plaques entretoise. Un dépôt modifie les conditions de liaison et l’écoulement du fluide secondaire. Le tube peut alors entrer en instabilité fluide-élastique, qui aboutit à une ruine rapide. Cette thèse vise à mieux comprendre l’effet de la non-linéarité de contact sur la dynamique d’un tube en air rentrant en contact intermittent avec les entretoises et ses conséquences en présence d’une instabilité. La discrétisation des conditions de contact entre le tube et les plaques, par des obstacles circulaires répartis sur l’épaisseur, ainsi que l’utilisation de bases de réductions enrichies permettent des résolutions numériques non-linéaires fiables et rapides, numériquement valides pour de fortes non-linéarités et des amortissements modaux négatifs, et bien corrélées avec les mesures correspondantes. On analyse les évolutions du contenu spectral (DSP) en fonction de l’amplitude d’excitation : remplissage des anti-résonances, décalage et étalement des pics ; puis on met en évidence la pertinence d’une notion de raideur apparente d’un contact bilatéral permanent qui permet de décrire ces transitions. En présence d’un système libre instable, on montre enfin que la non-linéarité conduit à des réponses bornées ou stabilisées ouvrant ainsi la voie vers une extension des travaux réalisés vers des applications avec fluide réel ou simulé. / The steam generator is a heat exchanger and participates to the nuclear safety. Energy is transferred from the primary to the secondary fluid through many U-tubes maintained vertically by support plates. A sludge deposit tends to modify the boundary conditions and the secondary fluid flow. A fluid-elastic instability can then occur and lead to quick tube ruin. This thesis seeks a better understanding of the effect of contact nonlinearity on the dynamics of a tube in-air intermittently impacting the support plates and its consequences in regards with instability. The use of discretized contact conditions with circular obstacles distributed over the thickness of the plates and the use of enriched reduction bases allow quick and relevant nonlinear numerical simulations. These simulations are well correlated with experimental measurements and valid even with strong nonlinearity or negative modal damping. The evolution of power spectral densities (PSD) with growing excitation amplitude is analyzed: padding of the anti-resonances, peak shift and spread. It is then shown that an apparent stiffness associated with a permanent bilateral contact is pertinent to describe these transitions. In the case of an unstable linear system, one demonstrates that the nonlinearity keeps the responses bounded or stabilised, thus paving the way for future work with real or simulated fluid flows.

[pt] Com o aumento das interligações elétricas entre países, surgiram vários desafios para reguladores e operadores do setor elétrico desses países. Um dos desafios mais importantes consiste em definir qual o custo pelo uso da transmissão de um país a outro país. O principal problema, neste caso, é que a informação elétrica de um país não está disponível para outros países, o que dificulta a devida alocação internacional pelo uso da transmissão. Este trabalho tem como objetivo analisar possíveis soluções para o problema da alocação de custos pelo uso da transmissão em sistemas multiárea. Para isso, alguns métodos representativos pelo uso da transmissão serão combinados com diferentes técnicas para criar sistemas elétricos equivalentes, representando um país (ou uma área). São analisados os métodos Prorata, divisão proporcional (PS-Proportional Sharing), Zbus e EBE (E-quivalent Bilateral Exchange). Para gerar os equivalentes são considerados os seguintes modelos: equivalente baseado em uma rede otimizada equivalente (ROE), que cria linhas fictícias a partir das barras de fronteira de cada país e das tensões destas barras definidas no caso base; equivalente Ward, em que cada país estabelece seu sistema equivalente com o uso da técnica de fatoração da matriz de admitância nodal e; finalmente, o equivalente REI (Radial Equivalent Indepen-dent), no qual uma rede elétrica é reduzida a um equivalente radial. As análises dos métodos de alocação de custos pelo uso da transmissão junto aos sistemas equivalentes foram realizadas com os sistemas 9 barras e IEEE 24 barras, ambos com três áreas. / [en] With the increase of the electrical interconnections among countries, there were several challenges for regulators and operators in these countries. One of the most important challenges is to define what is the transmission cost usage from one country to another country. The main problem in this case is due to the elec-trical information of one country which is not available to another country, which makes difficult the multiarea transmission cost allocation. The main objective of this dissertation is to examine possible solutions for the multiarea transmission cost allocation problem. To do this, some representative methods for transmission cost allocation will be combined with techniques to create equivalent electrical systems, which will represent a country (or area). The transmission cost allocation methods used are: methods Pro-rata, proportional sharing (PS), Zbus and EBE (Equivalent Bilateral Exchange). To generate the equivalents are considered the following models: equivalent based on an optimized network equivalent (ONE), which creates fictitious lines based on the optimization problem considering the interconnection buses of the frontier of the country and voltage in these buses es-tablished for the base case; The Ward equivalent, in which each country creates an equivalent system based on the internal information of its area and, finally, the REI equivalent (Radial Equivalent Independent), in which the power grid is repre-sented by a radial system. Analyses of those transmission cost allocation methods and equivalent systems were performed for 9 bus and IEEE 24 bus, both with three areas.
