A Vegetative Key to the Grasses of Erath County, Texas

Robinson, Inez Evans 08 1900 (has links)
"The orientation of this study began with a collection of the grasses of Erath County during their flowering periods. Collections were made in the Spring and Fall of 1950 and 1951 to obtain both vernal and autumnal grasses. Identifications were made from the grass floras previously mentioned and checked against specimens in the herbarium of North Texas State College for verification. In addition, the list was checked by W.A. Turney, Conservationist, United States Department of Agriculture of Dublin, Texas. Finally, the list was compared with that prepared by W.M. Cory for the plant areas of which Erath County is a part. On the basis of the above identifications, a critical study of the vegetative characteristics was made and a key based on these features prepared. The width of the blad and characteristics of the ligule, roots, culms, and sheaths were used to distinguish each of the eighty-six specimens found in the collection area. A drawing was made of the longitudinal section of the juncture of the blade and the sheath of each grass. This diagnostic section includes the collar, ligule, a part of the blade and sheath, and auricles, if present."-- leaf 5.

Locating turfgrass production sites for removal of phosphorus in Erath County, Texas

Hanzlik, Jeremy Edward 30 September 2004 (has links)
The North Bosque River watershed of central Texas hosts a large portion of diary production in the state. In recent years, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), formerly known as the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission (TNRCC), has applied a Total Maximum Daily Load Program for soluble phosphorus to the watershed. Best management practices (BMPs) are now necessary to remedy the issue of excess phosphorus. This thesis explores the application of GIS as an agricultural planning tool in support of a BMP for the region. The suggested BMP calls for the production of turfgrass sod using composted dairy manure; this sod is then transported at a profit from the watershed and provides an economically sustainable means to reduce the nutrient loading in the watershed. Using GIS, a geospatial database was developed with available data from government and institutional sources. As part of the development process, these sites were verified by field technicians and the results were combined in the GIS to refine the database. This database demonstrates the suitability of GIS as a tool for large-scale planning in agriculture.

Quantitative Chemical Analysis of the Soils of Erath County, Texas

Barnes, Benjamin F. 06 1900 (has links)
A chemical analysis of representative samples of Windthorst sand, Denton sand, and Denton clay has been made, and this analysis shows that their composition has a strict correlation with respect to their geological origins. The analyses of the different soils have shown the Windthorst sand to be highly deficient in all of the essential elements, whereas the Denton sand is deficient in only one; namely, phosphorus. The analysis of the Denton clay showed it to be highly fertile. From the consideration of the pH and the lime content, it has been determined to some extent what crops will grow in each of the soils.

The Texas State Program of Aid to Dependent Children, With Special Emphasis Upon Erath County

Spencer, Lela M. 08 1900 (has links)
"The problem of this study is to determine whether or not the financial grants available under the Texas state program of aid to dependent children are adequate to meet the needs of the persons receiving such grants. In accomplishing this objective, it became necessary to make a survey of the Texas state program of aid to dependent children as administered by the Texas State Department of Public Welfare. The basis upon which aid is granted, the amount of grants available, and a study of legislation governing the state program of aid to dependent children will be given prominence in this investigation. Likewise, a somewhat detailed study of twenty families who are recipients, or who have recently been recipients of aid to dependent children, all located in Erath County, Texas, will be presented as typical representations of such families all over the state of Texas who receive grants of aid for dependent children."-- leaf 1.
