Considerando o desenvolvimento de núcleos urbanos na Zona da Mata mineira no século XIX, posterior ao das regiões centrais de Minas Gerais, são apreciadas paisagens culturais e sonoras da região de Ubá. Na medida em que manifestações musicais são retratadas, a atuação da banda “22 de Maio” é demonstrada no contexto da sociedade ubaense do período. O movimento musical de João Ernesto e sua banda é apresentado levando-se em consideração os contornos históricos desse tipo de formação instrumental e sua inserção na cultura musical brasileira, com expressiva expansão no século XIX. / The objective of this paper is to investigate the works of Maestro João Ernesto (1873 – 1914), from the city of Ubá – MG, while acting musician in that place and founder of the “Sociedade Musical 22 de Maio” (May 22 Music Society). Considering the urban development of Minas Gerais State’s Zona da Mata region in the nineteenth century, delayed if compared to the central regions of the state, the cultural landscapes and soundscapes of the Ubá region are appreciated. In the same vein in which those musical manifestations are portrayed, the work of the band “22 de Maio” is also evidenced in the context of the ubaense society of that period. The musical movement of João Ernesto and his band is presented, taking in consideration the historical outlines of this kind of instrumental formation and its insertion in Brazilian musical culture, which saw significant expansion in nineteenth century.
