Para isso, examino a demografia escrava no que se refere à origem, nação, cor, sexo, faixa etária e ocupação. Essa análise possibilitou mensurar a importância do tráfico transatlântico de cativos para a região e, por outro lado, identificar entre os nascidos na África as nações mais representativas, bem como o início da crioulização. Ademais, permitiu refletir sobre a família escrava local. O estudo dessa dinâmica foi crucial para compreender a alforria, o perfil dos senhores e dos alforriados, e os tipos de alforrias ali praticadas. Foi possível perceber as leituras que escravos, libertos, senhores e advogados fizeram da alforria e como usaram a Justiça, fosse em defesa da liberdade ou da escravidão. As ações judiciais permitiram discutir a vulnerabilidade da liberdade e, em uns poucos casos, da escravidão. This thesis aims at understanding Rio de Contas slave society, a mining area in the capitaincy of Bahia, by investigating features of slave labor organization in order to apprehend slave/master relations in the course of the 18th century. Slave demography is examined in terms of origin, nation, color, sex, age range and occupation. Such an analysis made it possible to measure the impact of the transatlantic slave trade in the region and identify both the most representative nations among the slaves born in Africa and the beginning of the creolization process, leading to a reflection upon the local slave family. The study of such dynamics was vital for understanding the phenomenon of manumission, the profile of ex-masters and freed people, and the specific forms of manumission in the area. The readings of manumission made by the slaves, freed people, masters and lawyers were elicited as well as the way they turned to court either to defend freedom or slavery. Legal proceedings warranted a discussion of the vulnerability of freedom and, in a few cases, of slavery itself. / Salvador
