The Influence of Body Size on Adult Skeletal Age Estimation Methods

When human skeletal remains are found in prehistoric, historic, or forensic contexts, establishing age at death is an important step in reconstructing life histories, building demographic profiles, and identifying victims. Reliability for adult skeletal age estimations is generally lower than ideal, especially for individuals over the age of 40 years. A factor rarely considered in age estimation is that of body size; namely, how individuals of varying body sizes experience skeletal aging. This thesis explores the variables of BMI, stature, and body mass to quantify the influence of error from body size on adult skeletal age estimates. Eight age estimation methods were tested on 764 adult skeletons from the Hamann-Todd and William Bass Collections. These individuals were documented to have ranged in stature from 1.30m to 1.93m and body mass from 24.0kg to 99.8kg. Each age estimation method was evaluated separately. Analyses show that underweight individuals have the most error associated with their age estimations for all methods. All methods under-age underweight individuals by 5 to 15 years compared to average and obese individuals. The Kunos et al. method is the most reliable rib method, and the Lovejoy et al. and Suchey-Brooks methods are the most reliable pelvic methods. The İşcan et al. fourth rib method under-ages individuals by the highest degree compared to all other methods. The DiGangi et al. method is the most unreliable method with low accuracy (over twenty years) and high bias scores (under-aging individuals by almost 20 years). Body mass has a stronger influence on age estimation than stature. Studies have shown that body mass has a strong impact on bone resorption and remodelling rates, regardless of nutrition, and that tissue type (i.e. fat vs. muscle), physical activity, and mechanical loading influence bone remodelling. Skeletal remains of underweight individuals have fewer age markers while obese individuals show an increase in surface texture degeneration and osteophytic lipping. This is the first study to show that body size influences skeletal age estimation, and that age estimations are significantly different between weight-bearing and non-weight-bearing joints.

Applications possibles de la stéganographie sur la compression d’image et l’estimation du regard de l’oeil humain

La recherche présentée dans cette thèse est divisée en trois parties. Notre objectif dans la première partie est l’amélioration de la compression de l’image par stéganographie. Dans cette étude, la compression de données est effectuée en deux étapes. Tout d’abord, nous profitons du compactage d’énergie en utilisant JPEG pour réduire les données redondantes. Ensuite, nous intégrons des blocs de bits dans les blocs suivants de la même image stéganographie. Les bits intégrés servent à non seulement augmenter la taille du fichier de l’image compressée, mais aussi à diminuer davantage la taille du fichier. Les résultats expérimentaux montrent que notre méthode donne de meilleurs taux de compression tout en conservant une haute qualité de l’image. Le deuxième sujet de cette thèse propose un formalisme bayésien pour la stéganalyse d’image numérique qui permet la détection d’images stego, l’identification de l’algorithme de stéganographie utilisé, l’estimation de la longueur du message et l’emplacement, et l’anticipation dans le cas de l’intégration en utilisant un algorithme de stéganographie inconnu. La détection, l’identification et l’anticipation impliquent l’apprentissage discriminant dans l’espace des fonctions. L’estimation nécessite la fusion de classificateurs permettant la discrimination entre les sous-images et une intégration entière des couvertures de tailles différentes. La validation sur des images JPEG montre que le système proposé est efficace et permet d’anticiper des algorithmes de stéganographie inconnus. Le troisième sujet de la thèse décrit une méthode d’estimation du regard de l’oeil humain pendant un mouvement normal de la tête. Dans ce procédé, la position et l’orientation de la tête sont acquises par des données de profondeur fournies par Kinect. La direction de l’oeil est obtenue à partir d’images à haute résolution. Nous nous proposons la régression logistique multinomiale pour construire une fonction de mappage du regard et de vérifier l’état de l’iris. L’efficacité de la méthode proposée est validée par une évaluation de la performance pour plusieurs personnes avec différentes distances et poses par rapport à la caméra et dans différents états de l’oeil.

Experimental Investigation of Helicopter Weight and Mass Center Estimation

Real-time estimates of weight and mass center location for helicopters are desirable for flight control and condition-based maintenance purposes. While methods to estimate mass parameters of helicopters have been developed, they often assume near-perfect knowledge of helicopter dynamics and have been validated only through simulated measurement data. The work described here aims to experimentally validate a method for weight and mass center estimation using an ALIGN T-REX 600e R/C helicopter. The estimation algorithm utilizes an extended Kalman filter (EKF) which estimates the helicopter states along with the weight and mass center location in real-time. Nonlinear system identification is performed using maximum likelihood estimation to create an accurate dynamic model for use in the EKF. Results show that given a reasonably accurate dynamic model, weight, stationline mass center location, and buttline mass center location can be reliably estimated in non-descending flight conditions. Weight estimation is shown to be robust to sudden weight changes during flight, whereas stationline and buttline mass center estimates are marginally robust to sudden shifts in the mass center location. Waterline mass center proved to be unobservable for the axial flight maneuvers conducted. Detailed flight test studies characterize estimation error in weight and three-dimensional mass center position using the EKF formulation.
