Joining Forces for Better Joints: A Critical Analysis of the Current Literature on Race and Ethnicity in Orthopaedic Surgery

Gursay, D'Andrew January 2023 (has links)
Osteoarthritis affects over 100 million people worldwide, with a greater impact on people of color compared to white patients. Race and ethnicity plays a large role in modern medicine, particularly in urban communities. The paper will focus on knee and hip reconstruction and, analyzing preoperative and postoperative management to identify disparities. We will explore the use of agency, solidarity, and social justice in implementing an urban bioethical toolbox. This thesis discusses the issue of racial disparities in joint surgery and explores the multifactorial systems that contribute to these inequities. I aim to emphasize the importance of recognizing and acknowledging these disparities and identifying several recommendations to address them, including an interdisciplinary approach to care, providing appropriate resources and care to underprivileged communities, prioritizing diet and exercise as primary preventive measures, increasing diversity in the field of orthopedics, and incorporating social workers into routine surgeries. I also aim to stress the significance of cultural competence and community engagement in improving patient outcomes and reducing disparities in healthcare. / Urban Bioethics

The truth stumbles on campus" : a contribution from theological ethics to the search for a professional ethic in research

Lategan, Laetus O. K. January 2008 (has links)
Published Article / This paper argues for a professional ethic in research and the contribution of theological ethics thereto. The author points out that although theological ethics is poor at dealing with issues related to professional ethics and its application to research, theological ethics can nevertheless make a fundamental contribution towards a professional ethic for research. It is also emphasised that although there is very limited (South African) literature on this topic, some theological ethics studies can contribute towards the understanding of such ethics. The author works with a triple helix approach to (theological) ethics. This approach to ethics is built upon the concept of responsible acts (Douma), making decisions (Fisher) and a growth ethic (Burggraeve). The article concludes with pointers for a professional ethic in research from a theological ethics perspective.

Towards a more ethical military : the contribution of Aristotelian virtue theory to military ethics

Olson, Lonnie Wayne 06 November 2014 (has links)
The protracted wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have led to a number of moral abuses committed by members of the U.S. military. Media reports have focused particular attention on the human cost incurred by these abuses, the torture of detainees at Abu Ghraib and the massacre of civilians at Haditha being but a few, tragic examples. However, the human cost of these abuses is measured not just in the lives of noncombatants, but also by the number of military suicides that are a byproduct of traumatic combat experiences and the subsequent violation of moral norms. In light of this, any society that is sincere in its concern for the moral well-being of its soldiers, and the noncombatants with whom they interact, should seek to reduce the occurrence of such abuses. In this dissertation, I argue that the development of moral character, particularly the conception of moral character that Aristotle promotes in his ethical theory, is fundamental to preventing the moral abuses that soldiers commit, both in combat and during peacetime. This project is composed of five chapters. The first chapter is devoted to describing the moral challenges that confront soldiers, particularly on the battlefield. Chapter Two articulates the broad outlines of Aristotelian virtue ethics with a specific emphasis on four key features of Aristotle’s virtue theory and how they can be harnessed to promote ethical conduct within the military institution. Arguably, the most important component of moral character is practical reason, the ability to assess a moral problem, weighing all the various considerations that affect it, and arrive at an ethical solution. Considering this, Chapter Three examines how practical reason can guide the soldier’s understanding of obedience, loyalty and respect, traits that are widely considered military virtues, but which are also at the root of a great deal of unethical behavior. Chapter Four examines the military’s code of professional ethics and how the possession of practical reason is necessary if soldiers are to make ethical decisions in situations the code does not explicitly address. The final chapter, Chapter Five, argues for more emphasis on the development of practical reason in military ethics education. / text

Nursing ethics: An historical analysis and conceptualized module for today's practitioner.

Risner/Garick, Shirley Ann. January 1992 (has links)
As the twenty-first century approaches, science and technology in healthcare are making dramatic changes within the healthcare system. These changes are impacting the profession of nursing. Many of the changes included organ-transplants, genetic manipulation, surrogate mothering and other dramatic events that will collide with many of societies concepts of right and wrong. Nursing ethics has been lost in the modern day milieu of science and technology. This dissertation posits a foundation of ethics, axiology and nursing ethics via an historical review of nursing history. Included is a historical review of ethics, axiology and philosophical theories which encompass nursing ethics. This is followed by an analysis of nursing ethics and its historical development through codes of nursing. At the end of the analysis, a conceptualized learning module is presented to allow the nurse to develop an understanding in the area of nursing ethics with an educational foundation for understanding ethics and axiology. The conceptualized module contains theoretical situations which the nurse may encounter followed by an analysis of each situation. Within the context of the analysis, options and choices have been presented to help the nurse make an ethical decision.
