The influence of western civilization on Ashanti kinship system

Baker, Bertha Weane January 1953 (has links)
Thesis (M.A.)--Boston University / The contact of Ashanti with Western Civilization properly dates as far back as the 15th century when the Portuguese explorers went to Africa in search of spices and grain. But the influence which these early transients may have exerted on the Ashanti culture was insignificant when compared with the contact with the British four centuries later. This later contact marked the introduction of various social institutions, including new religious, educational, political and economic institutions. In many instances the new norms produced by them out across traditional kinship obligations and consequently produced new attitudes and values which led to change in the social structure. The primary purpose of this thesis is to formulate certain hypotheses which will explain social interaction. It shall attempt to show the functional relationship between a given economic institution and kinship organization. As an index of Western Civilization. therefore, it shall use only two general characteristics of western economic institutions, competition and individualism. And as an index of culture change it shall use the changing kinship system of the Ashanti society.

The quality of sub-Sahara African democracies in the 21st century : the role of European colonizers

Cosgrove, Melissa N. 01 January 2009 (has links)
What has caused the. African continent to remain fragmented, underdeveloped, and lacking liberal democracies? The present study attempts to quantitatively and qualitatively assess the effect European colonialism has had on sub-Saharan Africa democratic development. The research finds that problems of democratic consolidation in sub-saharan Africa are not necessarily due to the primitiveness of government institutions or trivial ethnic tensions, as generally believed. Instead the case is made that decades of absolute and arbitrary rule under European colonizers has hampered democratic development. Disregard for humanity and civility by the European colonial states made a peaceful transition after independence nearly impossible. The current complex challenges obstructing democratic consolidation in sub-Saharan Africa can be understood by examining the region's colonial history. This research project takes into account the uniqueness of Africa's experience by steering away from the traditional Western approach to truly understand Africa's democratic plight. Extensive qualitative research was conducted in order to determine the reasons why democracy is lacking in a majority of sub-Saharan Africa. The effects of European colonialism, the necessary factors for democratic transition, and why democratization is still limited in the region were all examined. While colonialism may not be the sole reason for sub-Saharan Africa's failed democracies, this research finds that it is the instigator of centuries of social, political, and ethnic strife.

Sociedades africanas frente à situação colonial europeia: o Estado Independente do Congo (1876-1908) / African societies in the face of European colonial situation: the Congo Free State (1876-1908)

Gonçalves, Rosana Andréa 08 August 2016 (has links)
The Congo Free State was internationally recognized in 1885 as a result of the action of European representatives in obtaining sovereignty transfer treaties with the African authorities and leaders of the Congo Basin region. However, the implementation of a \"civilizing mission\" aligned to the commercial interests of the Belgian king Leopold II, has not been without conflicts, struggles and resistances. The cruelty and arbitrariness that have marked this process echoed on the international public opinion, generating movements of complaints about violence toward the African populations. This work seeks to analyze the reactions and accommodations that followed the colonial situation that was imposed in a context in which were present multiple and varied forms of political organization of African societies in the region.
