Kyngäs, Sebastian January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this dissertation was to examine insulated window shutters potential to reduce heat losses in wooden frame windows. Windows are today the part of the building envelope that amounts for the biggest heat losses with up to 40% of the buildings total energy usage. The need for efficient and cheap methods to reduce heat losses in buildings is necessary to create the conditions required for a sustainable society. One solution is to use window shutters containing an insulated material, which during the night hours decreases the heat flow through the window. To estimate the total heat loss, the U-value can be used along with an area and the difference in air temperature between the indoor and outdoor climate. The problem is that all windows are uniquely designed which makes the assessment of its U-value complicated. In this report different methods for the calculation of a windows U-value and energy balance was assessed with a literature review. After the evaluation a computer program was created using the findings from the literature review. The program uses the geometry of an existing window as input data to calculate the U-value and potential energy savings for the window with a closed insulated window shutter. Three windows with known U-values and geometry from different companies was then compared with the programs calculated U-values for the same three windows. The results showed that the programs accuracy differed from 1-8%. It also showed that a windows U-value can be lowered with up to 81% when the insulated window shutter is closed during the night. The main conclusion that was drawn from this research was that insulated window shutters can reduce the heat flow through windows and that its efficiency depends on the air permeability of the shutter and the thickness of the insulated layer.
