Autonomous flight control system for an airship

Avenant, Gerrit Christiaan 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng (Electrical and Electronic Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In recent years, the use of airships has become popular for observation purposes since they provide a cost effective alternative to other aircraft. For this project a lateral and longitudinal flight control system are required for waypoint navigation flight of an 8m long, non-rigid airship. The airship’s actuators include a rudder, elevator and a propulsion system which can be vectored longitudinally. Two airship models are evaluated for this project. A chosen model is linearised and a modal analysis is done. The modal analysis is compared to a previous modal study done on the YEZ-2A airship and is found to compare well. Each airship mode is discussed and the linear behaviour is compared to the behaviour of the non-linear model. A fuzzy logic controller design approach was undertaken for the design of speed, heading and height controllers. These non-linear controllers were designed for the non-linear model, due to the following reasons: Fuzzy logic controllers show tolerance to model inaccuracies. Complexity of design is simple. Controllers can be adjusted intuitively. Fuzzy logic controllers can be combined with conventional control techniques. Simulation results showed adequate lateral and longitudinal performance, even when subjected to light wind conditions and disturbances. The inertial measuring unit implemented in a previous project is used and additional hardware is designed and implemented for the control of the airship’s actuators. Several improvements are made to the groundstation software to allow for activation of different controllers as well as for setting up the desired flight plan. The controller performance is tested through flight tests and shows adequate performance as well as controller potential. Although further work is still required for improving the controllers’ performance, this thesis acts as a platform for future research.

An investigation into control techniques for cascaded plants with buffering, to minimise the influence of process disturbances and to maximise the process yield

Gryffenberg, Jolandi 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng (Electrical and Electronic Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The Coal to Liquid facility, Sasol, Secunda operates as a train of processes. Disturbances and capacity restrictions can occur throughout the plant and the throughput fluctuates whenever disturbances occur. When capacity restrictions occur in a subplant and more substances enter the sub-plant than can be processed, the extra substances are flared or dumped and therefore lost. To reduce losses and extra costs and to maximise the throughput of the whole plant, supervisory control is implemented over the whole plant system. Each process in the process train is controlled with regulatory controllers and the overall process is then controlled with a supervisory controller. These two sets of controllers operate in two different layers of control, with the regulatory controllers the faster inner layer. The supervisory control is the outer layer of the two control layers. The supervisory controller takes over the work of the human operator by deciding on the changes in total throughput as well as the set points for each individual process. These set points for each process are then followed with the regulatory controllers. For the regulatory control of the system, different control methods are investigated and compared. The different control methods that are looked at are PI control, Linearised State Feedback control, Fuzzy Logic control and Model Reference Adaptive Control. After an investigation into the various control methods Fuzzy Logic control was chosen for the regulatory as well as the supervisory control levels. Fuzzy Logic control is a rule based control method. Fuzzy variables are everyday terms such as very slow or nearly full. These terms are easy to understand by the operator and multi-variable control is possible with Fuzzy Logic control without an accurate mathematical representation of the system. These facts made Fuzzy Logic control ideal for this implementation. To improve the profit of the Coal to Liquid facility the throughput was maximised. The combination of regulatory and supervisory controllers minimised losses and rejected disturbances. This resulted in a smoother output with maximum profit.

Phishing website detection using intelligent data mining techniques : design and development of an intelligent association classification mining fuzzy based scheme for phishing website detection with an emphasis on e-banking

Abur-rous, Maher Ragheb Mohammed January 2010 (has links)
Phishing techniques have not only grown in number, but also in sophistication. Phishers might have a lot of approaches and tactics to conduct a well-designed phishing attack. The targets of the phishing attacks, which are mainly on-line banking consumers and payment service providers, are facing substantial financial loss and lack of trust in Internet-based services. In order to overcome these, there is an urgent need to find solutions to combat phishing attacks. Detecting phishing website is a complex task which requires significant expert knowledge and experience. So far, various solutions have been proposed and developed to address these problems. Most of these approaches are not able to make a decision dynamically on whether the site is in fact phished, giving rise to a large number of false positives. This is mainly due to limitation of the previously proposed approaches, for example depending only on fixed black and white listing database, missing of human intelligence and experts, poor scalability and their timeliness. In this research we investigated and developed the application of an intelligent fuzzy-based classification system for e-banking phishing website detection. The main aim of the proposed system is to provide protection to users from phishers deception tricks, giving them the ability to detect the legitimacy of the websites. The proposed intelligent phishing detection system employed Fuzzy Logic (FL) model with association classification mining algorithms. The approach combined the capabilities of fuzzy reasoning in measuring imprecise and dynamic phishing features, with the capability to classify the phishing fuzzy rules. Different phishing experiments which cover all phishing attacks, motivations and deception behaviour techniques have been conducted to cover all phishing concerns. A layered fuzzy structure has been constructed for all gathered and extracted phishing website features and patterns. These have been divided into 6 criteria and distributed to 3 layers, based on their attack type. To reduce human knowledge intervention, Different classification and association algorithms have been implemented to generate fuzzy phishing rules automatically, to be integrated inside the fuzzy inference engine for the final phishing detection. Experimental results demonstrated that the ability of the learning approach to identify all relevant fuzzy rules from the training data set. A comparative study and analysis showed that the proposed learning approach has a higher degree of predictive and detective capability than existing models. Experiments also showed significance of some important phishing criteria like URL & Domain Identity, Security & Encryption to the final phishing detection rate. Finally, our proposed intelligent phishing website detection system was developed, tested and validated by incorporating the scheme as a web based plug-ins phishing toolbar. The results obtained are promising and showed that our intelligent fuzzy based classification detection system can provide an effective help for real-time phishing website detection. The toolbar successfully recognized and detected approximately 92% of the phishing websites selected from our test data set, avoiding many miss-classified websites and false phishing alarms.

A Software Framework for Prioritized Spectrum Access in Heterogeneous Cognitive Radio Networks

Yao, Yong January 2014 (has links)
Today, the radio spectrum is rarely fully utilized. This problem is valid in more domains, e.g., time, frequency and geographical location. To provide an efficient utilization of the radio spectrum, the Cognitive Radio Networks (CRNs) have been advanced. The key idea is to open up the licensed spectrum to unlicensed users, thus allowing them to use the so-called spectrum opportunities as long as they do not harmfully interfere with licensed users. An important focus is laid on the limitation of previously reported research efforts, which is due to the limited consideration of the problem of competition among unlicensed users for spectrum access in heterogeneous CRNs. A software framework is introduced, which is called PRioritized Opportunistic spectrum Access System (PROAS). In PROAS, the heterogeneity aspects of CRNs are specifically expressed in terms of cross-layer design and various wireless technologies. By considering factors like ease of implementation and efficiency of control, PROAS provides priority scheduling based solutions to alleviate the competition problem of unlicensed users in heterogenous CRNs. The advanced solutions include theoretical models, numerical analysis and experimental simulations for performance evaluation. By using PROAS, three particular CRN models are studied, which are based on ad-hoc, mesh-network and cellular-network technologies. The reported results show that PROAS has the ability to bridge the gap between research results and the practical implementation of CRNs.

Performed widely used forecasting techniques Soros, Bayeso, AR, Wiener analysis. It is widely used in prediction methods of mathematical statistics. Often mathematical statistics methods examine the functions of the large number of variables. Large numbers of variables are the main problems in many cases for discreet optimization methods. To limit the number of errors in calculating it is need for more testing. Often number of experiments should increase exponentially. It is possible that the statistics of events do not behave according to the data of a certain situation. For these and other reasons there was seek for other forecasting methods. Interference management in wireless cellular networks

Burchardt, Harald Peter January 2013 (has links)
In wireless networks, there is an ever-increasing demand for higher system throughputs, along with growing expectation for all users to be available to multimedia and Internet services. This is especially difficult to maintain at the cell-edge. Therefore, a key challenge for future orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA)-based networks is inter-cell interference coordination (ICIC). With full frequency reuse, small inter-site distances (ISDs), and heterogeneous architectures, coping with co-channel interference (CCI) in such networks has become paramount. Further, the needs for more energy efficient, or “green,” technologies is growing. In this light, Uplink Interference Protection (ULIP), a technique to combat CCI via power reduction, is investigated. By reducing the transmit power on a subset of resource blocks (RBs), the uplink interference to neighbouring cells can be controlled. Utilisation of existing reference signals limits additional signalling. Furthermore, cell-edge performance can be significantly improved through a priority class scheduler, enhancing the throughput fairness of the system. Finally, analytic derivations reveal ULIP guarantees enhanced energy efficiency for all mobile stations (MSs), with the added benefit that overall system throughput gains are also achievable. Following this, a novel scheduler that enhances both network spectral and energy efficiency is proposed. In order to facilitate the application of Pareto optimal power control (POPC) in cellular networks, a simple feasibility condition based on path gains and signal-to-noise-plus- interference ratio (SINR) targets is derived. Power Control Scheduling (PCS) maximises the number of concurrently transmitting MSs and minimises their transmit powers. In addition, cell/link removal is extended to OFDMA operation. Subsequently, an SINR variation technique, Power SINR Scheduling (PSS), is employed in femto-cell networks where full bandwidth users prohibit orthogonal resource allocation. Extensive simulation results show substantial gains in system throughput and energy efficiency over conventional power control schemes. Finally, the evolution of future systems to heterogeneous networks (HetNets), and the consequently enhanced network management difficulties necessitate the need for a distributed and autonomous ICIC approach. Using a fuzzy logic system, locally available information is utilised to allocate time-frequency resources and transmit powers such that requested rates are satisfied. An empirical investigation indicates close-to-optimal system performance at significantly reduced complexity (and signalling). Additionally, base station (BS) reference signals are appropriated to provide autonomous cell association amongst multiple co-located BSs. Detailed analytical signal modelling of the femto-cell and macro/pico-cell layouts reveal high correlation to experimentally gathered statistics. Further, superior performance to benchmarks in terms of system throughput, energy efficiency, availability and fairness indicate enormous potential for future wireless networks.

Automatic generation control of the Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) and the Oman Electricity Transmission Company (OETC) interconnected power systems

Al-Busaidi, Adil G. January 2012 (has links)
Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) and Oman Electricity Transmission Company (OETC) are running the main 132kV power transmission grids in the Sultanate of Oman. In the year 2001, PDO and OETC grids were interconnected with a 132kV Over head transmission line linking Nahada 132kV substation at PDO's side to Nizwa 132kV sub-station at OETC's side. Since then the power exchange between PDO and OETC is driven by the natural impedances of the system and the frequency and power exchange is controlled by manually re-dispatching the generators. In light of the daily load profile and the forecasted Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states electrical interconnection, it is a great challenge for PDO and OETC grids operators to maintain the existing operation philosophy. The objective of this research is to investigate Automatic Generation Control (AGC) technology as a candidate to control the grid frequency and the power exchange between PDO and OETC grid. For this purpose, a dynamic power system model has been developed to represent PDO-OETC interconnected power system. The model has been validated using recorded data from the field which has warranted the requirement of refining the model. Novel approaches have been followed during the course of the model refining process which have reduced the modelling error to an acceptable limit. The refined model has then been used to assess the performance of different AGC control topologies. The recommended control topologies have been further improved using sophisticated control techniques like Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) and Fuzzy Logic (FL). Hybrid Fuzzy Logic Proportional Integral Derivative (FLPID) AGC controller has produced outstanding results. The FLPID AGC controller parameters have then been optimised using Multidimensional Unconstrained Nonlinear Minimization function (fminsearch) and Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) method. The PSO has been proved to be much superior to fminsearch function. The robustness of the LQR, the fminsearch optimized FLPID and the PSO FLPID optimized AGC controllers has been assessed. The LQR robustness found to be slightly better than the FLPID technique. However the FLPID supercedes the LQR due to the limited number of field feedback signals in comparison to the LQR. Finally, a qualitative assessment of the benefits of the ongoing GCC interconnection project on PDO and OETC has been done through modelling approach. The results proved that the GCC interconnection will bring considerable benefits to PDO and OETC but the interconnection capacity between PDO and OETC needs to be enhanced. However, the application of AGC on PDO and OETC will alleviate the PDO-OETC interconnection capacity enhancement imposed by the GCC interconnection.
