Previous issue date: 2013 / The research is divided into three parts. The first is a study of the face and its relationship with the portrait, from classical definitions and approaches between the two concepts in art history. The second part of the dissertation deals with the face in film and concatenates the analysis of a few filmic propositions with different theoretical approaches as a way to reflect on the face in silent, classic and modern films. The vectorized face of classic cinema, treated as the main space of identification with the characters, operates differently from the deep face of modern cinema, which reveals internal movements, anxieties, nauseas. Both are, in the third part of the dissertation, confronted with the contemporary face. Space in which intensities and affects emerge, the face that appears in a certain recent film production is closer to the landscape than to the portrait. / A pesquisa é dividida em três partes. A primeira consiste em um estudo sobre a relação entre rosto e retrato, proposto com base em definições clássicas e aproximações entre os dois conceitos na história da arte. A segunda parte da dissertação aborda o rosto no cinema e encadeia a análise de algumas proposições fílmicas com distintas abordagens teóricas para discutir o primeiro plano nos cinemas mudo, clássico e moderno. O rosto vetorizado do cinema clássico, tratado como espaço principal de identificação com o personagem, opera de forma distinta do rosto profundo do cinema moderno, nos quais se revelam movimentos internos, angústias, náuseas. Ambos são, na terceira parte da dissertação, confrontados com o rosto contemporâneo. Espaço de intensidades e afetos, o rosto que surge em uma determinada produção cinematográfica recente aproxima-se mais da paisagem do que do retrato.

Defesa: Curitiba, 29/07/2016 / Inclui referências : f. 99-112 / Resumo: Existem diversos estudos que demonstram que o uso de vitaminas do complexo B pode ajudar no controle da dor neuropática em diversos modelos. Atualmente, apenas a droga carbamazepina, um anticonvulsivante, é aprovado pela agência americana Food and Drug Administration (FDA) para o tratamento da neuralgia trigeminal, mas a sua utilização está associada a inúmeros efeitos adversos. Este estudo fornece evidências de que o uso das vitaminas do complexo B tiamina (vitamina B1), piridoxina (vitamina B6) e cianocobalamina (vitamina B12), isoladamente ou em associação com a carbamazepina, atenua a hiperalgesia ao calor, ao frio e mecânica em um modelo de dor neuropática trigeminal em ratos. Nossos resultados mostram que o tratamento diário (durante 5 dias, com início no dia da cirurgia e término no dia 4 pós-cirúrgico) dos animais com as vitaminas B1, B6 e B12, isoladamente nas doses de 180, 180 e 18 mg/kg, respectivamente, por via subcutânea (s.c.), preveniu o desenvolvimento de hiperalgesia ao calor após constrição do nervo infraorbital (CION). Por outro lado, apenas a vitamina B12 (18 mg/kg, s.c., durante 5 dias) foi capaz de reduzir a hiperalgesia ao frio, e essa redução foi observada nos dias 6 e 9 após a constrição do nervo. Além disso, apenas o tratamento com a vitamina B6 (180 mg/kg, s.c., durante 5 dias, com início no dia 8 e término no dia 12 pós-cirúrgico) promoveu o aumento do limiar mecânico dos animais submetidos a CION, a partir do dia 10 após a cirurgia e manteve-se até o término do período de avaliação (dia 20 pós-cirúrgico). Adicionalmente, uma única administração intraperitonial (i.p.) de carbamazepina (30 mg/kg) foi capaz de reduzir a hiperalgesia ao calor e ao frio no 4º dia após a lesão do nervo, mas não foi capaz de modificar o limiar mecânico avaliado no 20º dia após o procedimento cirúrgico. A associação de baixas doses de cada vitamina, B1, B6 e B12 (18, 18 e 1,8 mg/kg, s.c., 5 administrações) com a carbamazepina (10 mg/kg, i.p., administração única) reduziu acentuadamente a hiperalgesia ao calor, enquanto a combinação da vitamina B12 com a carbamazepina (mesmas doses acima) promoveu a reversão da hiperalgesia ao frio, ambas avaliadas no dia 4 pós-cirúgico. Em conclusão, sugerimos que as vitaminas B1, B6 e B12 podem ser uma alternativa ou ser utilizadas como adjuvantes para controlar alguns aspectos da dor em pacientes que sofrem de neuralgia trigeminal. Mais estudos são necessários para elucidar os mecanismos subjacentes aos efeitos antihiperalgésicos dessas vitaminas. Palavras-chave: Neuralgia do trigêmeo, Constrição, Nervo infraorbital, Hiperalgesia térmica, Hiperalgesia mecânica, Ratos. / Abstract: A growing body of evidence obtained in various pain models, suggests that the use of B complex vitamins can help control neuropathic pain. Currently, only carbamazepine, an anticonvulsant drug, is approved by the Food and Drug Administration American Agency for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia, but its use is associated with numerous adverse effects. This study provides evidence that B1, B6 and B12 vitamins, alone or in combination with carbamazepine, ameliorate heat, cold and mechanical hyperalgesia in a rat model of trigeminal neuropathic pain. Herein, we demonstrated that repeated subcutaneous (s.c.) treatment (for 5 days, starting on the day of surgery up to day 4 after surgery) of rats with B1, B6 or B12 vitamin (180, 180 or 18 mg/kg, respectively) prevented the development of heat hyperalgesia after constriction of the infraorbital nerve (CION). On the other hand, only B12 vitamin treatment (18 mg/kg, s.c., for 5 days) was able to reduce the cold hyperalgesia and such reduction was observed on days 6 and 9 after CION surgery. Moreover, only B6 vitamin treatment (180 mg/kg, s.c., for 5 days, starting on day 8 up to day 12 post-surgery) promoted an increase in the mechanical threshold of rats submitted to CION, starting on day 10 after surgery and persisting up to day 20 post-surgery. Additionally, a single intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of carbamazepine (30 mg/kg) was able to reduce heat and cold hyperalgesia on day 4 after nerve injury, but was not able to modify the mechanical hyperalgesia assessed on day 20 post-surgery. The combination of lower doses of all three B vitamins (B1, B6 and B12, at 18, 18 e 1.8 mg/kg, s.c., 5 injections) with carbamazepine (at 10 mg/kg, i.p., single injection) caused a marked reduction of heat hyperalgesia, while the combination of B12 with carbamazepine (same doses above) promoted the reversion of cold hyperalgesia, both evaluated on day 4 post-surgery. In conclusion, we suggest that vitamins B1, B6 and B12 could be an alternative or be used as adjuvants to control some aspects of pain in patients suffering from trigeminal neuralgia. Further studies are necessary to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the antihyperalgesic effects of B complex vitamins. Biological mechanisms underlying inter- and intra- individual variability of face cognitionNowparast Rostami, Hadiseh 01 January 2016 (has links)
Given the importance of correctly perceiving and remembering faces for successful social interaction, face processing is one of the most widely studied cognitive domain in behavioral, neurophysiological and neuroimaging research, particularly, based on a group-mean approach. However, above mean differences, inter- and intra-individual variability in face processing provide valuable information for investigating the underlying mechanisms and binding the behavioral and neural substrates for better understanding of face processing.. In my dissertation I investigated the biological mechanisms underlying face cognition from an inter- and intra-individual variability perspective at the genetic, neural, and behavioral levels. The neural activities related to face processing are measured by event-related potentials (ERPs) and their trial-by-trial latency variability are estimated using a novel and well-established method, Residue Iteration Decomposition (RIDE).. Study 1 demonstrates the reliability of RIDE in extracting single-trial parameters of the P3b component, which is used in the investigation of the neural basis of intra-subject variability (ISV) in face processing speed in Study 2. In the Study 2, individual differences in ISV of face processing speed, measured at both behavioral and neural levels during a face processing task, are studied in their genetic variation. The results suggest that individual differences in ISV are related not only to the COMT Val158Met polymorphism, but also to the type of cognitive processing (e.g., memory domain). Moreover, we showed that ISV in reaction time can be partially explained by ISV in the speed of central cognitive processes.. Furthermore, the individual differences approach in Study 3, provided valuable and novel information beyond the common group-mean approach applied in the N1/N170-related research. Based on this approach, not only we could replicate previous findings that the N170 predicts individual differences in face cognition abilities, but also we could decompose individual differences in the N170 into a domain-general and a face-specific part with different predictive powers. Moreover, we showed that top-down modulations on the N170 have separable and qualitatively different relationships to face cognition abilities.. In summary, the integrated results from different studies in my dissertation demonstrate the psychological importance of the information provided by inter- and intra-individual variability in face processing in the investigation of its underlying biological mechanisms.

An Analysis of Possible Factors Affecting the Soft Tissue Response in Postadolescent Orthodontic PatientsCowan, Richard Edward January 1975 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / This study was carried out to evaluate the factors which may vary the soft tissue response in non-growing subjects. Pretreatment and post-treatment lateral cephalometric radiographs of twenty-nine postadolescent orthodontic patients were measured with a sonic digitizer using facial plane as the reference. Stepwise multiple regression analysis was performed to select those factors from the original set of 6 according to the statistical significance of their contribution in the prediction of the soft tissue response. It was found that 30.84% of the horizontal upper lip response is due statistically to the maxillary incisor change and the pretreatment upper lip thickness at the vermillion border. This study also revealed that 67.76% of the horizontal lower lip response is due statistically to the mandibular incisor change, the pretreatment upper lip
thickness at A-Point, and the mandibular postural change. Additionally, 16.50% of the vertical upper lip response is due statistically to the mandibular incisor change. Further, 33.39% of the vertical lower lip response is due statistically to the mandibular postural change and the pretreatment upper lip thickness at A-Point. Finally, the majority of the total variation in lip response is still not accounted for and therefore further research is needed.

ANDROGYNOUS AND GENDERED FACE PERCEPTIONGreenberg, Leigh January 2022 (has links)
Studies in face perception often use androgynous faces as a tool. The common assumption
about androgynous faces is that they lie at the halfway point of a continuum that
features "male" and "female" at the extremes. However, this definition has not been verified
by research. This thesis uses a variety of methods, with an emphasis on data-driven
methods, to test common assumptions about androgynous faces. Chapter 2 compared
morphed faces, which were created using the common definition of facial androgyny,
to naturally androgynous faces. Although the two groups were rated as equally androgynous,
the naturally androgynous faces were rated as significantly more feminine.
Chapter 3 focused on understanding androgynous face perception while minimizing prior
assumptions. In a series of experiments, participants handled androgyny-related tasks
and stimuli in a way that was qualitatively and quantitatively different than their gendered
counterparts. Overall, these results suggest androgyny as a category cannot be
accurately summarized as halfway between male and female and that a more nuanced
