Optical detection of spin-bath relaxation in Eu2 doped calcium fluoride

Clarke, Thomas E. January 1967 (has links)
The magneto-optical Faraday effect was used, to observe the spin-bath relaxation in Europium doped CaF₂ crystals at helium temperatures from 1.5 to 4.2° K. Theory shows that the magnitude of the Faraday rotation is proportional to the difference in population of the ground state doublet. The experimental method used in this thesis is the same as that which was successfully used by Glattli and by Griffiths. Pulsed microwave power at X-band frequencies was employed to disturb the equilibrium between the spin system and the bath. The observed relaxation time t was expected to have a T⁻¹ temperature dependence hut because of the orientation of the crystal in our dc magnetic field which resulted in the seven transition lines being close together, cross-relaxation effects produced a temperature dependence of approximately T⁻². It is suggested that exchange coupled pairs of Eu²⁺ and clusters involving Eu³⁺ may account for this temperature dependence rather than there being a phonon bottleneck present. The field dependence of the relaxation time was found not to be directly related to the resonance spectrum, The Eu²⁺ concentration of the crystals used in this thesis was .2% / Science, Faculty of / Physics and Astronomy, Department of / Graduate

Polarization of Radio Sources. I. Transfer of synchrotron Radition through an Extended Radio Source with Faraday Rotation|Polarization of Radio Sources. I. Homogeneous Source of Arbitrary Optical Thickness

Pacholczyk, A. G., Swihart, T. L. 11 1900 (has links)
The problem of transfer of radiation in a medium with polarized emission, polarized absorption and Faraday rotation of the plane of polarization is formulated. Solutions are obtained for the case of a homogeneous source. In the range of frequencies for which a medium is optically thick the degree of polarization of synchrotron radiation depends on the type of absorption process and is different for synchrotron absorption and for thermal absorption. It is therefore suggested that the low frequency polarization measurements of radio sources with curved spectra may determine whether synchrotron self -absorption or thermal absorption or another process is responsible for the low frequency curvature in spectra of certain radio sources.

Polarization of Radio Sources. II. Faraday Effect in the Case of Quasitransverse Propagation

Pacholczyk, A. G., Swihart, T. L. January 1970 (has links)
Under the conditions of quasitransverse propagation of electromagnetic waves in a magnetoionic plasma, the effect analogous to Faraday rotation in the quasilongítudinal case (which we will call Faraday pulsation) can produce a large elliptical polarization of originally linearly polarized radiation. Therefore, the presence of elliptical polarization in the radiation cannot serve as a means for distinguishing between a synchrotron mechanism with high energy electrons and any other type of emission process in radio sources in which conditions suggesting quasi - transverse propagation (large magnetic fields) may take place. The Faraday pulsation has a wavelength dependence through which it can be identified.

Next generation of current sensors for aeronautics: preliminary designs

Babinet, Cyril 19 May 2008 (has links)
As a specialist in power distribution for the aerospace industry, Leach International-Europe intends to master both design and production of the current sensor - a strategic component - while offering a novel technology, free from important disadvantages of the previous generation. This report puts forward some research directions to replace the present generation, based on the Hall Effect and equipping most of commercial and military aircrafts. Relying on a feasibility study, and after reviewing the state of the art, this work heads quickly on exploiting Faraday's Law. The latter allows getting a voltage as an output directly from the magnetic field generated by the current flowing inside the conductor. The different solutions introduced here are based on analytical calculations (when it is possible), simulations and numerical calculations and are grounded on designing a sensor with an acceptable sensitivity.
