George Farquhar revisitado por dramaturgos contemporâneos / George Farquhar revisited by contemporary playwrights

Sarmento, Camila Noggi Luly 14 October 2015 (has links)
This study aims to present and discuss the comedies Love and a Bottle (1698) and The Beaux \'Stratagem (1707) written by George Farquhar and, respectively, revisited by the Irish playwright Declan Hughes and by the American playwrights Thornton Wilder and Ken Ludwig. The objective of this dissertation is to identify the reasons that motivated the playwrights to (re)write such works and investigate the method of (re)creation, analyzing the important changes that occurred in their creative processes. Moreover, understanding which strategies to provoke laughter are used by George Farquhar, by Hughes and Wilder-Ludwig is essential to this research. The theoretical framework of this study builds on works about adaptation and appropriation as A Theory of Adaptation (2006) by Linda Hutcheon and Adaptation and Appropriation (2006) by Julie Sanders, as well as works on laughter and Restoration comedy, Histoire du rire et de la dérision (2003) by George Minois and A Companion to Restoration Drama (2001) organized by Susan J. Owen.

Percival Farquhar, um homem quase sem nenhum caráter entre oligarcas e nacionalistas de muita saúde (1898-1952) / Percival Farquhar, a man with almost no character among oligarchs and nationalists of great health (1898-1952)

Milani, Martinho Camargo 05 April 2017 (has links)
The present thesis sought to portray the period of the Old Republic between 1898 and 1931. Understand the role of Brazil\'s economic dependence on a product: coffee; And the constant indebtedness carried out by the nation to cover the constant budgetary rhythms. Special attention was given to borrowing from foreign institutions, especially European institutions, the so-called funding loans (1898, 1914, 1931). Such economic-financial conditions were countered with the recessive policies of the Metalist chain. Once the country was rediscovered, new periods of time were established in the economy, metaphorically as the myth of Sisyphus. In these interminable cycles, Brazil underwent profound socioeconomic transformations resulting from the adoption of the republican regime, the abolition of slavery and increasing industrialization and urbanization. It was in this context that an American businessman, Percival Farquhar became one of the greatest entrepreneurs in Brazilian history. He built an immense industrial empire in activities such as railroads, ports, sawmills, refrigerators and hotels (among others). Not without deep opposition from nationalists and agrarians. Finally, it was tried to demonstrate through the reports of the Ministry of Finance between 1898 and 1915 that, contrary to what was intended, Metalist policies were one of the great responsible for the industrialization of Brazil. Against the will of its ideologues. In Brazil in convulsion and complete transformation the ruling classes settle in old upholstery, exchanging only the weathered leather.

Birth of a Regiment, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry 1914-1919

Kempling, James S. 05 December 2011 (has links)
This thesis uses a web site as its primary format. Readers are invited to visit www.birthofaregiment.com. Financed by a wealthy Montreal businessman, the original regiment was very British in its make-up. The Patricia’s were recruited and trained separate from the Canadian Expeditionary Force. For the first year of the war, they fought in a British brigade, under British officers using British weapons. By 1919, the PPCLI were distinctly Canadian. The Patricia’s became the best known Canadian regiment and one of three retained in the permanent force. This thesis examines that remarkable transition, the changes wrought by the war and the mechanisms used to reinforce the unique image of the Patricia’s. It also tests several myths embodied in the histories of the Regiment against a database of over five thousand files of soldiers who served with the Patricia’s during the First World War. / Graduate
