Análise de viabilidade econômico-financeira de alcoodutos no Brasil / Economic and Financial Feasibility Analysis of Ethanol Pipelines in Brazil

Marina Andriolli 03 April 2009 (has links)
The goal of this work was to delimit profitability indexes, as such Internal Rate of Return IRR, Net Present Value NPV and payback, for two alternatives of ethanol pipelines grids selected by UNICAs et al. (2006) working group, and to analyze if these projects are economically feasible in comparison with other investment alternatives that are available for the involved agents. The sensitivity analysis of the project in relation to some variables changes, as the investment values, tariff and volume transported through the pipeline, was an important exercise. It was also done a comparison among the resulting profitability indexes of UNICAs et al. (2006) work and those calculated in this dissertation. The main data necessary to the feasibility analysis of the selected alternatives (Conchas/Paulínia/Campo Limpo/Santos and Conchas/Paulínia/São Sebastião pipelines) as pipelines extension, necessary investments, project period, start of operations, charged tariff for ethanol transportation, pipelines capacity, operations and maintenance spending and cost of capital was also obtained in UNICA et al. (2006) work. Considering the available data, the Discounted Cash Flow DCF method was selected to make the investments evaluation. The results indicate that, considering the investment structure, pipeline tariff and modular capacity of the pipelines initially determined to the projects by UNICAs team, none of the selected grids have satisfactory profitability indexes in relation to market reality. So, it is possible to conclude that, in case of projects of this nature, which are essential to the economic and infrastructure development in Brazil, governmental subsidies are necessary, in addition to private initiative massive participation, characterizing the need of Public- Private Partnerships - PPP.

Guidance for using pilot studies to inform the design of intervention trials with continuous outcomes

Bell, Melanie L, Whitehead, Amy L, Julious, Steven A 01 1900 (has links)
Background: A pilot study can be an important step in the assessment of an intervention by providing information to design the future definitive trial. Pilot studies can be used to estimate the recruitment and retention rates and population variance and to provide preliminary evidence of efficacy potential. However, estimation is poor because pilot studies are small, so sensitivity analyses for the main trial's sample size calculations should be undertaken. Methods: We demonstrate how to carry out easy-to-perform sensitivity analysis for designing trials based on pilot data using an example. Furthermore, we introduce rules of thumb for the size of the pilot study so that the overall sample size, for both pilot and main trials, is minimized. Results: The example illustrates how sample size estimates for the main trial can alter dramatically by plausibly varying assumptions. Required sample size for 90% power varied from 392 to 692 depending on assumptions. Some scenarios were not feasible based on the pilot study recruitment and retention rates. Conclusion: Pilot studies can be used to help design the main trial, but caution should be exercised. We recommend the use of sensitivity analyses to assess the robustness of the design assumptions for a main trial.

Perfecting the art of the possible : a constraint-based view of ideal and non-ideal theory

Carey, Brian Patrick January 2015 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to describe and defend ‘The Constraint-Based View’, which is a particular conception of the nature of, and relationship between, ideal and non-ideal theories of justice. Traditionally, ideal theory is characterised by the assumption of ‘full compliance’, while non-ideal theory is characterised by the assumption of ‘partial compliance’. In other words, ideal theories assume that those for whom the theory is meant to apply will be entirely willing and able to comply with the theory’s requirements, while non-ideal theories do not. In Chapter 1 of this thesis, I describe and assess this original conception as well as several alternative accounts of ideal and non-ideal theory, in order to offer a broad survey of the existing literature, and to identify the various ways that these conceptions fail to capture fully the relationship between ideal and non-ideal theory. In Chapter 2, I draw a distinction between two different approaches to theorising about justice. ‘Axiological’ or ‘A-Type’ approaches are characterised by the fact that they include almost no assumptions as inputs to the theory, and that they are not intended to provide action-guiding recommendations as part of the outputs of the theory. In contrast, ‘Practical’ or ‘P-Type’ approaches include additional assumptions as part of their inputs and are intended to form part of a process that ultimately produces action-guiding recommendations. In Chapter 3, I describe and defend my preferred conception of the relationship between ideal and non-ideal theory – the ‘Constraint-Based View’ (CBV). According to the CBV, there is a spectrum of theoretical approaches that can be more or less ideal, depending on the extent to which they include ‘soft constraints’ as part of the inputs to the theory. Soft constraints are facts about the world that can be changed, in contrast to hard constraints, which are facts about the world that cannot. I argue that this way of thinking about the relationship between ideal and non-ideal theory is more useful than the alternative conceptions considered in Chapter 1. In Chapter 4, I examine the roles that feasibility considerations should play in ideal and non-ideal theory, from the perspective of the CBV and in Chapter 5, I explain the implications of adopting the CBV for what I call ‘transitional theory’, which is concerned with the transition from the status quo towards a more ideal state of affairs. In Chapter 6, I offer an example of the CBV in action, by considering its implications for the debate over duties of justice towards future generations.

Studie proveditelnosti / A Study of the Feasibility

Kreps, Radan January 2011 (has links)
There is the high saturation of markets in this turbulent time. In common with the competition are markets like an impregnable fortress. So the words like segmentation, targeting and positioning have been playing the key role during selection of required market. The aim of submitted work is to value the efficiency of implemented plan. The point is about branch establishing and its retrospective evaluation of Feasibility Study. This step will be done with some analysis and factors. The last episode will be the part of recommendation for getting it better.

A Novel Approach for Calculating the Feasibility of Urban Agriculture using an Enhanced Hydroponic System

Kacheris, William, Kacheris, William January 2016 (has links)
With a continued worldwide trend in population shift from rural to urban areas predicted to increase, new approaches to agricultural production must be considered and implemented. Little academic interest has been applied to determining economically viable urban agriculture crop production sites for business investment. A feasibility model to aid investors in selecting appropriate sites for the development of urban agriculture food production within population centers was created. Lettuce crop trials were performed from August 2015 to December 2015 at the University of Arizona Controlled Environment Agriculture Center to validate the productivity of a unique high density hydroponic system designed for the rooftop environment. The feasibility model is based on this system and with a minimal number of inputs, ranging from size of growing space to growing media costs, determines a wide range of useful outputs. These outputs include crop productivity within the facility, material inputs and a cost breakdown of starting a new agricultural venture. The model utilizes multiple sheets within one excel document to give the user a clear and organized financial perspective of a hypothetical growing operation in the main sheet. With this model, investors into urban agriculture will have a means to gain an objective view of financial considerations before substantial investment is completed.

Feasibility and Preliminary Effects of Using a Mobile App (i.e., Calm) to Decrease Overall Stress in Middle-Aged Men and Women Who Report Elevated Stress

January 2020 (has links)
abstract: Background: Unmanaged stress is a major contributing factor to the development of disease in both men and women. Middle-aged adults (40-64) have some of the highest stress of all age groups and the use of meditation may provide relief for conditions such as stress. A smartphone application (app) may help limit the magnitude of the perceived challenges of meditation. The purpose of this study is to determine the feasibility of a consumer-based meditation app (i.e., Calm) to reduce stress in middle-aged adults who self-report elevated stress. The preliminary effects of Calm on stress and health outcomes related to stress were explored as well as the preliminary effects of Calm on mindfulness and coping behaviors for stress were explored. Methods: Adults were recruited to a 4-week app-based health and well-being study. Participants were randomized into either a mindfulness meditation (i.e. Calm) group or a health education (POD) control group. Participants were asked to participate at least 10 minutes per day. Assessments were conducted for stress, anxiety, depression, mindfulness, physical activity, eating habits, and coping behaviors at pre- and post-intervention and voluntary phone interviews were held post-intervention. App usage data were collected subjectively through weekly participation logs and through objective app usage data provided by Calm. Results: Eighty-three participants were enrolled into the study and 60 completed the intervention and were analyzed. Feasibility and demand benchmarks were met with 96% of participants satisfied with the intervention and 93% found it enjoyable, appropriate, and useful. There was a 70% adherence (minutes/week) to the meditation intervention. Recruitment of men into the intervention group was 38.1% and retention of men was 81.3%. Significant changes were not observed in stress, anxiety, depression, or mindfulness, physical activity, eating habits, and coping behaviors. Conclusion: The findings of this study support the feasibility of a 4-week, mobile app-based mindfulness meditation intervention (i.e. Calm) in middle-aged adults. These finding do not demonstrate preliminary efficacy of Calm to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression or improvement of mindfulness, physical activity, eating habits, or coping behaviors among middle-aged adults who report elevated stress. These results can be applied for improved design of future studies. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Behavioral Health 2020
