General description and understanding of the nonlinear dynamics of mode-locked fiber lasers

As a type of nonlinear system with complexity, mode-locked fiber lasers are known for their complex behaviour. It is a challenging task to understand the fundamental physics behind such complex behaviour, and a unified description for the nonlinear behaviour and the systematic and quantitative analysis of the underlying mechanisms of these lasers have not been developed. Here, we present a complexity science-based theoretical framework for understanding the behaviour of mode-locked fiber lasers by going beyond reductionism. This hierarchically structured framework provides a model with variable dimensionality, resulting in a simple view that can be used to systematically describe complex states. Moreover, research into the attractors' basins reveals the origin of stochasticity, hysteresis and multistability in these systems and presents a new method for quantitative analysis of these nonlinear phenomena. These findings pave the way for dynamics analysis and system designs of mode-locked fiber lasers. We expect that this paradigm will also enable potential applications in diverse research fields related to complex nonlinear phenomena.

Limited observing time at large telescopes equipped with the most powerful spectrographs makes it almost impossible to gain long and well-sampled time-series observations. Ditto, high-time-resolution observations of bright targets with high signal-to-noise are rare. By pulling an optical fibre of 450m length from the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope (VATT) to the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) to connect the Potsdam Echelle Polarimetric and Spectroscopic Instrument (PEPSI) to the VATT, allows for ultra-high resolution time-series measurements of bright targets. This article presents the fibre-link in detail from the technical point-of-view, demonstrates its performance from first observations, and sketches current applications.

Novel methods and apparatus used to measure high-speed state of polarization changes are developed. Knowledge of the effects of mechanical impacts on the state of polarization will benefit the reliability of optical communication systems. The impact creates a high-speed but continuous motion of the state of polarization over the Poincar´e sphere. The maximum speed at which the state of polarization changes due to an impact is shown to be higher than what has been reported previously. The investigation into the state of polarization changes led to the discovery of the repeatability and elasticity of state of polarization changes due to mechanical impacts. The repeatability and elasticity allow novel measurements of important polarization effects in optical fibres such as high-speed polarization mode dispersion and rotation vector measurements.
