Thespioprudence : Australian film directors and Film performance

I think that if there is no theory of acting, at least there are theoretical laws that we may find, curiously enough, in all traditions of acting. It is true that the term "theory of acting" does not seem fundamentally wrong, but it seems always somewhat imperialistic and pretentious. I prefer to use fundamental laws which we sometimes know but then sometimes lose and forget. It is only practice that all of a sudden can make law or tradition rise to the surface. I will not say then that there is no theory of acting; on the contrary, there have been many of them. Of course, what interests me in these multiple theories are the essential laws that are common to all of them." - Ariane Mnouchkine (from "Building Up the Muscle" in Re:direction edited by R. I come to filmmaking from an actor's perspective and believe that the power of each individual performance is the key to audience engagement with a feature film. The technical aspects of filmmaking, for me, exist primarily to serve the story as revealed through the actors' performances. Because performance in film has been a neglected area of research, I set out to explore the different approaches to performance theory which might apply to film performance in an Australian context. In this dissertation, I have asked a number of key questions about how the director communicates with the actor to elicit the desired performance. I framed this thesis around one overarching question: What is the dominant approach used by Australian film directors when working with actors on performance? This study reveals that many Australian filmmakers have been most influenced by a wide variety of approaches to working with actors, particularly because of the way actors are trained in Australia. My interest in this project was partially triggered by my observation that many filmmaking students at QUT seem driven by the technical aspects of filmmaking. Given the complex demands made on actors, filmmakers who do not learn to speak the actor's language arguably fail to capitalize on their working relationships with actors. I have attempted to express my findings in plain English because the whole purpose of this project was to ensure that my findings would be of use to new filmmakers in a practical sense.

Behind film performance in China’s changing institutional context: the impact of signals

Yes / Grounded in signaling theory, this paper investigates the signals reflecting product quality, innovativeness, reputation and cultural background which influence film performance, i.e. film survival (duration on cinema screen) and box office success, in China’s changing institutional context. This market has grown substantially and still possesses potential for further development. However, China’s unique institutional context presents challenges. By examining an expanded range of potential signals, two of which have not previously been examined in the literature, namely imported films and enhanced format film formats such as 3D and IMAX, we develop a conceptual framework and argue that signaling theory needs to be combined with institutional context. Similar to findings for film industries in other countries, we find quality and reputational signals including budget, star power, sequels, and online consumer reviews to be important in China. However, unique results are also revealed. Chinese consumers react to an innovativeness signal in that they are specifically attracted to enhanced format films. Film award nominations and prizes are insignificant reputational signals. Once other signals are taken into account, imported films on average do not perform as well as domestic films. We link these findings to China’s unique institutional setting and offer important implications for management, recognizing the challenges to film companies of competing in an increasingly globalized market. The paper is also of relevance to policymakers given their continued efforts in shaping the development of China’s film industry.

Integrated Gas Sensor - Studies On Sensing Film Deposition, Microheater Design And Fabrication, Interface Electronics Design And Testing

Recently, there has been an increasing interest in the electronics world for those aspects related to semiconducting gas sensor (SGS) materials. In view of the increasingly strict legal limits for pollutant gas emissions, there is a great interest in developing high performance gas sensors for applications such as controlling air pollution and exhaust gases in automotive industry. In this way, semiconductor gas sensors offer good advantages with respect to other gas sensor devices, due to their simple implementation, low cost and good stability and sensitivity. The first part of the thesis is dedicated to the synthesis, film structural and sensitivity study of the Tin Oxide film deposited by RF sputtering, doped with noble metal Palladium (Pd). Effects on the Gas Sensitivity due to the deposition parameters like thickness of the film, Substrate temperature, Ar /O2 ratio of the sputtering environment, annealing temperature and duration and doping metal weight % into the Tin Oxide films are studied and the results are shown in detail. The sensitivity and selectivity of the gas sensing film is decided by the operating temperature i.e. the temperature of the gas sensing film while it is in the target gas ambience, Microheaters happen to be the very important component in the gas sensor especially with wide band gap semiconducting metal oxides films such as tin oxide, gallium oxide or indium oxides. Other than gas sensing microheater also finds applications in many areas like thermal dip pen nanolithography, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), fluid pumping with bubbles, in vitro fertilization etc. So in this report due importance was given for the design and fabrication of the microheater. Microheaters are the most power consuming element of the integrated Gas sensors. This is also an important reason for the extensive microheater work in this research. Six different heater patterns were simulated by considering low power and temperature uniformity as an important goals. Among them the best three patterns named Double spiral, “Fan” Shape and “S” shape were chosen for fabrication and both thermal and electrical characterization results of them were presented in detail in the Microheater section of the thesis. It is believed that the intelligent design and integration of the electronic circuitry (for drive, signal conditioning/compensation, and read-out) with the gas sensing element can mitigate some of the significant issues inherent in solid-state gas sensors, such as strong temperature and humidity dependence, signal drift, aging, poisoning, and weak selectivity. The sensitivity of the gas sensors which has been indicated as the dynamic change of resistance in wide range should be read out properly. Towards this aim a low cast high efficient readout circuit is designed and implemented. Temperature monitoring and controlling is a key phenomenon in the metal Oxide based gas sensors since the selectivity mainly depends on the operating temperature of the sensing film. So focus was also shown on the design and implementation of the temperature monitoring and control unit, which been presented in the last part of this thesis.
