Poverty in U.S. and Canadian Financial Literacy Curriculum Frameworks: A Critical Discourse Analysis

Soroko, Agata January 2015 (has links)
This thesis examines the topic of poverty and the treatment of economically marginalized individuals in official high school financial literacy curriculum frameworks in the United States and Canada. Employing critical discourse and ideological analysis, this study investigates the stated and unstated ideological assumptions underpinning financial literacy curriculum documents and what they imply about poverty and people who are poor. Findings suggest that official financial literacy curriculum frameworks overwhelmingly ascribe to individualistic paradigms of poverty that see individuals as personally responsible for their financial outcomes. Few documents examined delve into the social, political, and economic contexts affecting individuals’ ability to maintain financial security and build wealth. Additionally, topics of relevance to people who are poor as well as their perspectives and experiences are avoided in the majority of these documents, which are found to be middle-class centric. Offering a critique of financial literacy as it is manifested in contemporary U.S. and Canadian curriculum frameworks, this thesis contributes to scholarship problematizing financial literacy initiatives and calling for more inclusive, critical, and social justice oriented approaches to financial literacy education.

Analýza právní úpravy lichvy / Analysis of usury legislation

Červenková, Tereza January 2016 (has links)
The project analyzes current legislation on usury in the Czech Republic and the financial literacy of the adult population. On 1 Dec. 2016, an amended Act on Consumer Loans entered into force and this project examines it. The project compares Czech legislation on usury with selected European Union countries. Czech legislation is similar with German and Portugal legislation, especially in terms of civil law. The most effective legislation can be considered in Spain, which explicitly stipulates allowed interest rate limits. Based on that, Czech legislation on usury should be adjusted. The research results show a correlation between respondents' highest-achieved level of education and their financial literacy levels. The research also finds that the number of court distraints (property seizures) and the willingness to borrow money is lower among respondents with university-level education than for respondents with secondary and basic school education. When comparing our findings with research by STEM/MARK dating from 2010, it is clear that the financial literacy of the adult population in the Czech Republic has not changed significantly since that time.

Regulace finančního poradenství v České republice / Regulation of Financial Advisory in the Czech Republic

Klofáč, Michal January 2013 (has links)
Consulting one's personal finance with a financial advisor should allow even the less financially educated to optimize their financial portfolio. The client-advisor relationship is however a strong case of information asymmetry, which can result in harm being made to the client by the advisor, either knowingly (when the advisor attempts to maximize their own utility, even at the client's cost) or unknowingly (e.g. when the advisor is inadequately qualified in the field). One of the ways to reduce such risks is a proper regulatory framework, which is the core subject of the thesis. At first, the thesis analyzes the current state of financial advisory in the Czech Republic (how it is performed, what part of the population benefits from it, what the main problems are etc.) and shows how the client-advisor interaction ought to be performed. The main part of the thesis describes what the main problems and risks for the client are and which legal measures exist that can reduce these negative effects. The current legal framework in the Czech Republic is then thoroughly analyzed and compared with best-practice of select EU states. Finally, legal measures which are currently being discussed or passed as laws are mentioned. In the very end, other measures which could help make the field of financial advisory in the Czech Republic more efficient are suggested. The aim of the thesis is to provide a compact overview of the regulatory measures currently affecting financial advisory in the Czech Republic, show them in the international context and test the hypothesis that the Czech market of financial advisory is still relatively immature and that further appropriate regulation would improve its effectiveness resulting in higher protection of clients.
