Factors affecting the development of non-traditional export: a case study of the cut flower industry in Malawi.

Kubwalo, Max. January 2006 (has links)
<p>Malawi has a narrow export base comprised mainly of tobacco, tea and sugar as the main sources of foreign currency. Cut flowers were identified as one of the export products that could help wean the country's economy off its high dependency on tobacco leaf exports. The decreasing price of tobacco at the auction floors coupled with new anti smoking legislations worldwide has made alternative crops exports critical. The main objective of this research was to ascertain the state of the Malawian cut flower industry by / examining the developmental trajectory followed by the Malawian export cut flower industry over the last ten years / identifying the various factors inhibiting the growth of the Malawian export cut flower industry / recommending appropriate interventions and strategy to support vigorous growth of the sector in future.</p>

Morfoanatomia de órgãos reprodutivos de cinco espécies de malpighiaceae /

Souto, Letícia Silva. January 2011 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The family Malpighiaceae includes 1,200 species and 66 genera and has been important for forests and savannas from the Old and the New World. Its monophyletic origin is unquestionable; however, its intrafamilial taxa have still been controversial and considered artificial by several authors. The flower morphology of Malpighiaceae is quite homogeneous, but fruits present extreme diversity, with dehiscent or indehiscent, fleshy or dry pericarps. Although morphological traits of fruits have been used to delimit taxa within Malpighiaceae, recent molecular studies have indicated the occurrence of carpological homoplastic traits. Thus, detailed studies on Malpighiaceae fruits have great taxonomic potential. Furthermore, flower vascularization can reveal evolution steps prior to the current flower morphology of the species. Thus, the present work aimed to: 1) describe, ontogenetically, the structure of fruits and seeds from four Malpighiaceae species, including the genera Janusia, Mascagnia and Tetrapterys; 2) characterize the flower anatomy of such species and Camarea linearifolia, highlighting their vasculature, in order to correlate these aspects with the evolutive and ecological meaning of Malpighiaceae flowers; 3) report female sporogenesis and gametogenesis in Janusia occhionii, investigating the probable occurrence of apomixis. The flower vasculature observed in the species follows the general pattern as to number of vascular traces, except for M. cordifolia, in which the non-glandular sepal receives one vascular trace but shares the lateral traces from adjacent sepals that bifurcate. In the ovary, the dorsal carpel trace is not emitted, occurring a complex of procambium and ground meristem; M. cordifolia presented conated glands from the anterior and adjacent sepals. In T. chamaecerasifolia and Janusia species, the anterior sepal lost their glands probably by reduction... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Doutor

Britten’s Op 47, Five Flower Songs: Breaking Trends in Analysis

Jackson, Christopher Michael 08 1900 (has links)
Benjamin Britten’s life and music have been the subject of study from early in his musical career. Current trends in psychological analysis of Britten’s music tend to focus on common themes, such as homosexuality, pacifism, the sense of the outsider, and the loss of innocence. Similarly, theoretical analyses tend either to provide general categorizations of the technical elements in Britten’s music or to apply a singular preconceived concept as a tool for understanding his compositions. These approaches have yielded significant information but leave aspects of Britten’s personality and music unilluminated. Britten’s Op. 47, Five Flower Songs, are a collection of five part songs for a cappella chorus that are often included within the canon of 20th century choral literature. This paper examines a new perspective on Britten’s music by examining the relationship between Britten’s friendships and their influence on his compositions. Through the examination of these relationships information is revealed that allows for a new method of analysis that is particularly relevant to the Five Flower Songs. The opus was dedicated to two botanists for the occasion of their 25th wedding anniversary. Contained within specific movements are extra-musical references to scientific characteristics of the flowers that are the subjects of the texts. By examining this work and important connections between other friendships and his compositional output this paper demonstrates the validity of this perspective in analyzing Britten’s life and music.

Bouquet: a Satellite Constellation Visualization Program for Walkers and Lattice Flower Constellations

Enkh, Mandakh 2011 August 1900 (has links)
The development of the Flower Constellation theory offers an expanded framework to utilize constellations of satellites for tangible interests. To realize the full potential of this theory, the beta version of Bouquet was developed as a practical computer application that visualizes and edits Flower Constellations in a user-friendly manner. Programmed using C++ and OpenGL within the Qt software development environment for use on Windows systems, this initial version of Bouquet is capable of visualizing numerous user defined satellites in both 3D and 2D, and plot trajectories corresponding to arbitrary coordinate frames. The ultimate goal of Bouquet is to provide a viable open source alternative to commercial satellite orbit analysis programs. As such, the coding of Bouquet puts heavy emphasis on flexibility, upgradability and methods to provide continued support through open source collaboration.

The study of flower preference schemata and purchase decision-making behavior.

Lee, Lea-Fong 14 August 2003 (has links)
ABSTRACT While in the developed countries, flowers are living necessity and enjoy a sizable market, the Council of Agriculture Executive Yuan R.O.C points out that cultivation and sales of flowers are important items in the prospecting dedicated agriculture industries of Taiwan. Besides the enjoyment and appreciation the beauty of blooming by oneself , in social life flowers can perform the instrumental function of expressing wishes in the occasion of marriage, birthday, promotion, house moving, and consolation in the sickness or sadness. The study of flower preference schemata is one of the importance concepts for flower product design and development. The current research figured out different patterns of flower preference among people¡¦s mind ,through pictures of moth orchid and rose designed by the three factors of flower beauty: color, volume, and package. The distinctive flower buying behaviors of the different groups were studied consequently. In our valid sample are 696 teachers from senior high and junior high schools and elementary schools in the Kaohsiung area in Taiwan. In addition to the description and analysis on people¡¦s flower buying behavior about flower type preference, shop choice, purchase frequency, and flower-as-present purchase behavior, the major findings of the current research are as the following: (1) Confirming that there exist distinctive flower preference schemata in people mind; (2) Flower preference affect the purchase behavior; (3) Demographic variables moderate the effect of flower preference on the purchase behavior; (4) Flower attitude and demographic variables affect flower consumption behavior.
