Foram avaliadas, no pré e pós pastejo, as alturas do dossel, IL, IAF, massa de forragem e as características morfogênicas e estruturais. As características período de rebrotação (PR), taxa de aparecimento foliar (TApF), taxa de aparecimento de perfilhos (TAP) obtiveram comportamento linear crescente com o aumento do IAFr. Já as características taxa de alongamento de colmo (TAlC), tamanho de final de folha (TFF), filocrono, taxa de senescência foliar (TSeF), dias de vida da folha (DVF), massa seca de colmo (MSC) no pré-pastejo e massa seca de folha (MSF) no pós-pastejo obtiveram comportamento linear crescente. Em relação aos ciclos de pastejo a TFF obteve efeito linear crescente, a TApF obteve comportamento quadrático com ponto de máximo no segundo ciclo, a MSF no pós e pré-pastejo, e a relação folha/colmo (F/C) obteve efeito linear decrescente, e as características PR, TAlC, filocrono, TSeF e DVF obteve comportamento quadrático com ponto de mínimo no segundo ciclo. Most cattlemen in the Southeast are in the cow-calf business and sell calves at weaning. The extra cost of shipping feeder calves for finishing and then shipping the carcasses back to the East adds to the price of meat. This practice also takes away a potential source of profit by farmers who could finish these calves. Economically, it is difficult for states in the East to compete with grain producing states for the production of slaughter cattle in the feedlot. The alternative of using forages native to the areas of the Appalachians with a minimum of high energy grains should increase the economic potential for producing market animals in this area. / Ph. Harlan if barley produced the most forage at the early cutting while Mesa oats yielded the most forage at the later cutting. Gustoe barley produced the highest grain yields.

Wood and Forage Production in Cleared and Thinned Dry Tropical Woodland: Implications to Goat Nutrition

Wood for firewood, fence posts and construction material and forage for domestic livestock are key resources in the caatinga vegetation zone of northeastern Brazil. This experiment was designed as a preliminary assessment of thinned caatinga as the basis of a production system which optimizes forage and wood production. Two levels of thinning (25% and 55% tree canopy cover) were compared to cleared (0% tree canopy cover) and undisturbed (95% tree canopy cover) caatinga in terms of forage and wood production and goat nutrition. Clearing and thinning of caatinga vegetation resulted in higher amounts of available forage through the wet ·season and up to the time of leaf fall. After leaf fall, total available forage was similar for all four treatments. Dietary selection differed among the treatments only in February and May, when goats on treated pastures selected higher amounts of herbaceous vegetation than those on control pastures. Herbaceous vegetation was the primary dietary constituent on treated pastures throughout the wet season. During mid to late dry season, when herbaceous vegetation was dead and leaf:stem ratios were low, browse was consistently selected at high levels. Nutrient content of diets were not different among treatments, but forage and digestible energy intakes were higher (P<.OS) on treated pastures than on control. Due to lack of wood production on cleared plots from an intact tree component, total aboveground biomass production for the cleared treatment was 30% less than that for the control and about 25% less than that for the two thinned treatments. Overall, cleared and thinned treatments had similar positive forage and animal responses but thinned treatments had the added benefit of an intact tree canopy producing valuable wood. The dry season has been identified as the most critical time of the year for livestock due to low forage availability and quality resulting in weight losses and mortality. Results of this study indicated that either supplementation or increased availability of nutritious forage would be necessary for goats to continue to grow beyond the first half of the dry season. Thinning may be a means of increasing the availability of nutritious forage.

O presente trabalho teve o objetivo geral de estudar as respostas produtivas de capins do gênero Cynodon em resposta a estratégias de corte. O experimento foi conduzido no campus da ESALQ em Piracicaba, SP. Foram avaliados três cultivares, Tifton 85 e Jiggs (estabelecidos vegetativamente) e Vaquero (propagado por sementes) submetidos a três intervalos de corte, 14, 28 e 42 dias. O delineamento experimental foi completamente casualizado com arranjo fatorial completo. Foram medidas a produção de forragem, composição morfológica da forragem produzida, o índice de área foliar (IAF), a interceptação luminosa (IL) e altura do dossel. Foi feito também um estudo de análise de crescimento. Os cultivares Jiggs (22,6 Mg MS ha-1) e Tifton 85 (21,8 Mg MS ha-1) apresentaram os maiores acúmulos de forragem total na média das frequências de 28 e 42 dias de rebrotação. Na frequência de 14 dias de rebrotação, não houve diferença para o acúmulo total de forragem entre os cultivares com média de 13,3 Mg MS ha-1. A proporção de folhas, em média, foi maior nas frequências de 14 (69,6%) e 28 (55,2%) dias de colheita no verão. No inverno a proporção de folhas foi de 57,6% e 59,8% para as frequências de 14 e 28 dias de corte, respectivamente. Tifton 85 e Vaquero apresentaram maior porcentagem de folhas no verão, com médias de 63,3% e 56,0%, respectivamente. No inverno o Tifton 85 apresentou maior porcentagem de folha, com média de 63%. As frequências de 14 e 28 dias resultaram em maiores porcentagens de folha. O Jiggs apresentou maior porcentagem de colmo (46,7%) no verão e no inverno (40,0%). Responses measured included forage accumulation (yield), plant-part composition in the accumulated forage, leaf area index (LAI), sward light interception (LI), and sward height. A classical growth analysis study was also carried in the same field plots. Jiggs (22.6 Mg DM ha-1) and Tifton 85 (21.8 Mg DM ha-1) were the highest yielding materials under the 28- and 42-d schedules. Under the 14-d frequency, total forage accumulation did not differ among cultivars, averaging 13.3 Mg DM ha-1. On average, leaf percentage in the accumulated forage was higher in plots clipped every 14 (69.6%) and 28 (55.2%) days. In the cool-dry season, with irrigation, leaf percentage in the harvested forage was 57.6 and 59.8% in plots harvested every 14 and 28 days, respectively. No Brasil, os sistemas de produção em ruminantes são principalmente a base do fornecimento de forragens cultivadas em grandes, medianas ou pequenas extensões do território nacional. A maior parte destas pastagens estão em um avançado estado de degradação por causa de um mal aproveitamento das vantagens que oferecem as gramíneas utilizadas nestes sistemas de produção. Um dos motivos pelos quais muitos estes sistemas ainda não são sustentáveis, é o mal uso ou não uso de suplementos no solo, levando o esgotamento de recursos em el solo muy importantes para o bom desenvolvimento de uma gramínea como o é o nitrogênio e o potássio. Como consequência disto, o desempenho animal, fator crítico nos sistemas de produção pecuário são baixos e o rendimento econômico faz que a empresa produtora de carne e leite bovino não seja rentável. Objetiva-se com este estudo avaliar o efeito a eficiência biológica de doses crescentes de adubação em pastagens de capim-marandu e capimmombaça durante os períodos de verão e outono com 3 tratamentos, e duas repetições. Foram 3 as doses de adubação avaliadas: 1) 50 kg N/ha + 50 kg K2O/ha; 2) 300 kg N/ha + 300 kg K2O/ha e 3) 600 kg N/ha + 600 kg K2O/ha, sobre os seguintes parâmetros: 1) massa de forragem produzida em cada um dos tratamentos no pré-pastejo; 2) Composição morfológica; 3) taxa de lotação; 4) frequência de pastejo; 5) composição químico-bromatológica. Foram utilizados 6 piquetes, cada um de 2 ha (3 de variedade Marandu e 3 de variedade Mombaça), nos quais foram coletadas as informações do trabalho de campo. Adicionalmente, dois piquetes com as mesmas dimensões, cada um, com uma das variedades de capim estudadas foram usados como área de reserva. Todos os piquetes foram divididos em 6 partes iguais e contaram com uma área de lazer de 15x30 metros. 181 novilhas foram utilizadas como agentes desfoliadores em ciclos de pastejo de 5 dias de ocupação e 25 de descanso para o campi-marandu e 7 dias de ocupação e 35 de descanso para o campi-mombaça. No período da seca foi testado o desempenho de 103 novilhas entre prenhes e vazias suplementadas com dietas a base de cana-de açúcar e 4 fontes de proteína (farelo de soja, farelo de soja + uréia, uréia e uréia de liberação lenta). A taxa de lotação tive um efeito linear positivo às doses de N e KCl avaliadas. A qualidade do capim foi pouco influenciada pelos tratamentos. Todos os suplementos usados na época da seca permitiram manter o peso médio e obter um ganho de peso adicional. O uso de adubos nitrogendos e potássicos permite aumentar a eficiência do uso da terra permitindo disponibilizar áreas dedicadas à pecuária para outro tipo de atividades no agronegócio. / In Brazil the ruminant production systems are mainly based on the offer of pastures cultivated in large, medium or small areas of the country. Most of the prairies in these production systems are in an advanced state of degradation due to misuse of the gramineae advantages making them unsustainable. The misuse or non-use of soil supplements leads to the depletion of resources such as nitrogen and potassium highly important for the proper development of grass. As a consequence the animal performance, a critical factor in livestock production systems is low, causing a negative impact on economic efficiency of the meat and milk production enterprise making it not profitable. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect and biological efficiency of increasing doses of fertilizers on Marandu and Mombaça pasture prairies during summer and autumn periods with three treatments in two repetitions. With three fertilizer doses evaluated: 1) 50 Kg of N/ha + 50 Kg of K2O/ha; 2) 300 Kg of N/ha + 300 Kg of K2O/ha and 3) 600 Kg of N/ha + 600 Kg of K2O/ha; on the following parameters: 1) mass of forage produced in each of the treatments on the pre-grazing, 2) morphological composition, 3) livestock rate, 4) frequency of grazing, 5) chemical and bromatological composition. 6 paddocks were used, each one of 2 ha (3 with Marandu variety and 3 Mombaça variety) were field work information was collected. Additionally, two fields with the same dimensions mentioned above, each one with the grass varieties tested were used as a reserve area. All paddocks were divided into 6 equal parts and counted with a rest area of 15 x 30 meters. 181 heifers were used to consume the accumulated pasture in grazing cycles, 5 days of occupation and 25 days off in Marandu pasture prairies and 7 days of occupation and 35 days off for Mombaça pasture prairies. In the drought period the performance of 103 pregnant heifers both pregnant and non-pregnant was evaluated, they were fed with diets supplemented with sugar cane and 4 protein sources (soybean meal; soybean meal+ urea; urea; and slow release urea).Lifestock rate had a positive linear effect on increasing doses of the N and KCl evaluated.. Pasture quality was poorly influenced by the treatments. All supplements used in the dry season allowed maintaining weight and additional weight gain. The use of nitrogen and potassium fertilizers allowed the increase of efficiency of soil and to use areas dedicated to livestock to other activities in the agribusiness.

Effects of burning and thinning on species composition and forage production in British Columbia grasslands

The structural integrity of fire-dependent ecosystems, such as ponderosa pine (<i>Pinus ponderosa </i> Dougl.) and Interior Douglas-fir (<i>Pseudotsuga menziesii </i> (Mirb.) Franco) biogeoclimatic zones in Interior British Columbia (BC) is changing. The problems within these ecosystems include decreased rangeland area, reduced carrying capacity and loss of biodiversity due to tree encroachment and forest ingrowth caused mainly by fire suppression. The goal of this study was to determine the effect of burning and thinning on understory vegetation of grassland and forested sites. The burning experiment took place at Dew Drop (Tranquille Ecological Reserve) located 20 km northwest of Kamloops, BC. Thinning was done at two upper grassland sites near Cache Creek, BC; Coal Mine Pasture and Gladys Lake Pasture. Species evenness and values of the Shannon-Weiner Diversity Index (H) were reduced (13 and 27%, respectively) within three years following burning (P = 0.014 and P = 0.038, respectively). Burning reduced canopy cover of shrubs on grassland sites (P = 0.005) and it reduced graminoid cover on forest sites (P = 0.014) immediately after the treatment (1999) but both functional groups had recovered by 2002. Litter depth and total canopy cover of plants were reduced in grasslands and forests immediately following burning (1999) but litter depth and canopy cover had recovered by 2002. Litter cover and litter depth beneath the tree canopy were reduced by burning (P = 0.037 and P = 0.009, respectively). Trends in the data indicate forb standing crop increased and total understory standing crop increased following burning in the grassland compared to the control. Graminoid standing crop was reduced 47% by burning in the forests (P = 0.049). Thinning reduced species richness in the first (P = 0.033) and fourth (P = 0.030) years, and H in the first year (P = 0.037) following the thinning at Coal Mine Pasture. Trends in the data suggest understory standing crop increased at Coal Mine and Gladys Lake Pastures following thinning. At both locations, thinning reduced litter depth. Therefore, burning and thinning kills trees, reduces fuel loads, and increases standing crop of the understory.
