. / One thousand and one hundred and twenty-eight chickens were performed in four strains and six replications of 47 birds each one. Heavy strains chickens: AgRoss (Ag), Cobb 500 (Cb), Arbor Acres (AA) and one Experimental strain (Exp) were studied. Only males, from parent stocks at 36-37 weeks of age were analysed. The chickens were allocated in a experimental poutry house with water and feed ad libitum. The objective of this study was the comparison in each strain, analysing the body weight, width and crypt height of the villus of the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum with the zootechnical indices (weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion ratio). The informations were collected every week until five weeks of age, and the chickens subjected to the evaluation of the intestinal characteristics and segments of the small intestine to the morphometric analysis were randomly selected (one bird / replication). The intestinal segments were fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin solution and processed routinely method processed to 5-6æm hematoxylin eosin-stained sections and examined by light microscopy. Morphometric characteristics were determined using a computer-aided light microscope image analysis with an Image Pro-Plus software. Results were presented as means l standard error and differences among means were compared by Tukey Test , and were considered statistically significant at p<0.05. The results presented that the major increasing of the intestine was in the first week of age, and it keeps increasing with the normal development of the bird. There were not significantly differences (p<0.05) among the different strains, both in the intestinal characteristics and in the zootechnical indices, but there were differences among the different periods of collection during this experiment.

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of continuous ingestion of pectin on the development, integrity and protection of the intestinal mucosa of broilers. It was analyzed the jejunum and ileum pH, number of goblet cells, intestinal morphology, degree of loss of epithelium and rate of mitosis and apoptosis. For this we used 600 male Cobb chicks ®, with one day of age in a randomized design in a split plot design, four levels of pectin in the diet (0, 1, 3 and 5%) and six ages (7 , 14, 21, 28, 35 and 42 days) with five replicates of 30 birds per treatment, the parameters evaluated weekly from 1 to 42 days old. Based on the results, it was found that the intake of pectin reduces the jejunum and ileum pH, making it more acidic and increases the number of goblet cells (mucin-neutral and acid) and, consequently, to protect the intestinal mucosa . Data from the intestine showed that the inclusion of fiber in the diet had no effect on the total length of small intestine and each of its segments, except the ileum, whose length decreased with increasing pectin. Moreover, the perimeter of the duodenum, jejunum and ileum increased with the pectin, and the total area thereof. The height, width, perimeter and area of the villi of the three intestinal segments decreased with the addition of pectin. In contrast, the density and total number of villi and the total luminal surface area increased with increasing intake of fiber. The crypt depth was not influenced by levels of pectin, however, the mitotic index in that region was reduced with increasing fiber in the intestinal segments. The results of degree of loss of epithelium showed that the duodenum, jejunum and ileum, the increased level of pectin in the diet decreases the percentage of normal villi and increases the degree of loss of epithelium. Furthermore, regardless of the level... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)
