Witchcraft plays 1587-1635 : a psychoanalytical approach

Woods, Katherine January 2013 (has links)
This thesis comprises detailed readings of nine early-modern plays featuring female witches in an attempt to recover an understanding of how they were represented on the early-modern stage and what they meant to their first audiences. Drawing on twentieth-century theories of subjectivity, it offers an avenue for the explanation of moments of misogyny in the plays and identifies an unconscious communal anxiety which was revealed and perpetuated by the stage representation of the witch. Although we cannot fully recapture the experience of an audience of 400 years ago, this study attempts to do so in order to place the plays in the context of anxieties detectable in the period. By reading the plays in reference to theatrical conditions, this thesis identifies moments when the drama enlisted the subjectivity of the audience and the witch was constructed as uncanny. Such an approach contributes to the debate on the ages of actors performing certain female characters and suggests potential staging approaches for future performances.

This research starts from a clinical case in which the psychiatric diagnosis was central in the life of the subject, which caused the question about the effects of diagnosis on him. This theme is relevant to the problem on the incidence of the concept both in the clinic and in psychoanalytic theory. The literature review conducted in BvS-Psi, SciELO, LILACS, and CAPES Journals Portal to the terms diagnosis, psychiatry, psychoanalysis, Freud and Lacan, evidenced, in psychiatric diagnosis, the influence of the epistemic systems that support psychiatry. In psychoanalysis, a sliding in the theoretical and clinical approaches that relate diagnosis. This review outlined the aim of the work: conduct a theoretical research on the place of diagnosis in Lacanian psychoanalysis. In Freud, the Oedipus complex theory and its relationship with castration - responsible for the symbolization of lack of representation of sexual difference in the psyche - holds a diagnostic analysis in distinct mechanisms used by the psyche to handle this lack. In neurosis, the castration is the repression object; in the psychosis is forclusion object; and in the perversion is refusing object. In Lacan are two approaches: the first, in the preliminary interviews, the diagnosis is organized around the structure, thought from the language. Second, the recourse to Borromean knot guides a diagnostic approach that is not modeled in the primacy of the signifier, but the unspeakable joy of the field. In this, nodes are the support to think the psychic constitution and the diagnosis is given by tying records R, S, I, the node of each one. This Lacan final approach forwarded us to a fertile advance with the psychoanalytical clinic to allow think some joints with a clinical case, and leaving major questions for the savoir-faire of psychoanalytic practice, yet to be climbed.
