ABSTRACT This work, consisting of two articles, aimed to study the association between masticatory function and its determinants. Explore the relationship between masticatory function (bite force, masticatory performance, swallowing threshold) and the possible association between oral conditions (bruxism, caries, malocclusion, DTM) and body of children (BMI). The first chapter is a systematic review aimed to assess the influence of sleep bruxism on the bite force and qualitatively assess the methodological consistency of the studies published in the literature. The second article is a cross-sectional study with 59 children aged four to 12 years old attending the pediatric dentistry clinic at the Federal University of the Jequitinhonha and Mucuri, in Diamantina (Brazil). This study aimed to investigate the association between oral conditions, body and masigat?ria performance. At the end of the first study, it is concluded that despite the increased number of reports no difference in bite force between the groups, the methodologies have inconsistent. Further research correlating sleep bruxism and bite force. And in the second article children in deciduous dentition have worse masticatory performance than children in mixed and permanent dentition. Furthermore, the higher the cavitation number of teeth, chewing performance was worst. The impairment of masticatory function may facilitate the diagnosis by identifying children with tooth loss and caries lesions which, in turn, may be associated with other problems such as changes in nutritional status and temporomandibular disorders.
