Due to the enormous complexity of an ecological system and the long periods of the related dynamics, it is very difficult to analyse the interaction between animals and plant populations without suitable computer models. In this thesis, the dynamics between elephant and trees (a major food source) are considered using computer simulations.

The effect of habitat alteration by elephants on invertebrate diversity in two small reserves in South Africa.Govender, Navashni. January 2005 (has links)
Balancing increasing elephant numbers with biodiversity conservation in small reserves has
become a concern for many protected area managers. Elephants are considered important
agents of disturbance creating heterogeneity and thus contributing to the maintenance of
biodiversity. However elephants also damage vegetation through their destructive feeding
habits, and this has led to pressure to reduce elephant populations in many reserves.
Quantitative data on the impact of elephants on invertebrates, the main component of
biodiversity at the species level, are lacking.
The aim of this project was to assess the effect that habitat alteration by elephants has
on the diversity of selected ground-dwelling invertebrates (ants, centipedes, millipedes,
spiders, scorpions and termites) through the provision of logs and dung as a potential refuge
niche for these invertebrate communities, and to determine the effect of spatial (vegetation
types) and temporal (season and age of dung) variation on the invertebrates using these
refugia. Variation in impacts was considered important because savanna is not homogenous
and the impact of the refugia is likely to be dynamic in terms of seasonal trends in
invertebrate populations, and in terms of changes in the environmental conditions offered by
the refugia.
Elephant impact on vegetation, quantity of refugia (logs and dung) produced and
invertebrate diversity associated with refugia were determined for 115 transects within
Madikwe Game Reserve in the North Western Province, South Africa. Invertebrate
abundance, species richness and diversity were always higher under refugia than in areas
without refugia. Vegetation utilisation, frequency of refugia production and invertebrate
diversity showed strong temporal variation (seasonal); elephant impact and production of logs
were higher in winter than in summer because elephants are more likely to feed on woody
vegetation in winter when grass nutrient levels are low. Invertebrate diversity under the logs
was higher in summer than in winter, and this probably reflected the higher abundance and
diversity of invertebrates that are usually associated with the warmer, wetter summer months.
The effect of adding refugia to three vegetation types on invertebrate diversity was
tested experimentally at Makalali Private Game Reserve in the Limpopo Province, South
Africa. Logs and elephant dung were set out in five plots each measuring 20m x 20m within

mixed bushveld, riverine and mopane woodland. Significant differences were observed in
invertebrate abundance, species richness and diversity between the refugia and control plots
that lacked refugia and between the three vegetation types sampled. Similarity between
invertebrate communities utilising the different refugia types and between the three different
vegetation types were tested using the Jaccard similarity coefficient. The three vegetation
types shared fewer than 50% of their species, as did the logs, dung and control sites. However
the results obtained do illustrate a higher degree of similarity between the refugia substrates
(logs and dung) than the control sites and between the more heterogeneous vegetation types
(mixed bushveld and riverine) than the mopane veld. This indicated that invertebrate
communities associated with refugia were not uniform, but were influenced by vegetation
type.
An experimental test of temporal changes in invertebrate community composition
illustrated the importance of elephant dung as a microhabitat for different invertebrate groups
over different ages of dung (three days, two, four, 12 and 32 weeks old). Colonisation of the
dung, by dung beetles was immediate but as the microclimate of the dung changed with time,
the new conditions were ideal for other invertebrate taxa. Over a period of eight months, the
change of invertebrate communities utilising the dung included dung beetles, followed by
millipedes and [mally ant and termite communities.
The results of this study illustrated the importance of refugia (logs and dung) produced
by elephants for ground-dwelling invertebrate species in the savanna environment. The extent
of the influence of the refugia varied both spatially and temporally and this should be
considered in future monitoring or in measuring impacts. While further research on a broader
range of organisms and at larger scales is necessary, elephants do have a positive impact on at

The grassland dynamics of Mkambati game reserve.Shackleton, Charles Michael January 1989 (has links)
A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Science, University of the
Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in fulfillment of the requirements for
the degree of Master of Science. / This work describes the coastal grasslands of Mkambati Game Reserve
and their suitability for the present large herbivore complement.
The initial description makes use of both field survey and
quantitative sampling and multivariate analysis which facilitated
the production of soil and vegetation maps at tre scale of 1:
10 000. Suitability of these grasslands for herbivores is assessed
in terms of both quantity and quality of food available and the
present herbivore impact.
Local variation in soil type was considerable. Eight standard soil
forms were distinguished as well as severaI others previously
undescribed. Most of the soils were dystrophic although nutrient
'hot-spots' were common. This determined floristic composition of
the various communities to some extent.
Three grassland communities and four subcommunities were recognized
which contributed 81, 5% to the total area of the reserve. The
remaining area comprised forest. wetlands. exposed rock and
accommodation camps. Each grassland community was associated with
particular ranges of the measured environmental variables.
The standing crop of the three communities was high relative to
other areas of Southern Africa. Absolute amounts varied seasonally
being highest in summer and lowest in winter Partitioning between
the phytomass, necromass and litter components also varied
seasonally. Total standing crop increased with increasing interval
since the last fire. Litter breakdown rates differed between
communities and species.
Forage quality was poor being lowest in autumn and winter and
declining with age. This was probably a result of the dystrophic
soils. Crude protein and phosphorus were limiting for several
months of the year. Total forage quantity was in excess of the
present herbivore needs although availability declined with age and
during the non-growing season. However, the poor quality reduced
the amount available such that present herbivore impact was low, at
all times being less than 9%.. Removal by herbivores was highest
several months after a fire when absolute amounts of various
nutrients were at a maxinum per unit area. Thereafter it declined
to less than 1% with aging of the sward.
The implications of the results for management are discussed and
future research needs identified. / AC 2018

An analysis of the development model for ex-farmworkers and adjacent communities in the Indalo association of private game reserves in the Eastern CapeTessendorf, Samantha Millicent January 2015 (has links)
Over the past fifteen years there has been an extensive conversion of land use from traditional farming practices to conservation and private game reserves. It has been suggested by Langholz and Kerley (2006:2) that privately owned preserved areas can engage in ecotourism initiatives by protecting biodiversity, succeeding financially and contributing to social upliftment. However, ecotourism has to operate within the context of historical land dispossession of the majority black population and current land reform initiatives to address this problem. In view of the economic, social and environmental importance of ecotourism based private game reserves (PGRs) in South Africa, particularly the Eastern Cape, the main goal of this research is to examine the Indalo association of private game reserves in the Eastern Cape Province’s development model for ex-farmworkers and adjacent communities. This was done through a literature survey and analysis of existing studies and by interviewing the managers of the Indalo PGRs and a few farmworkers to get their opinions of the tension between what they are doing and the imperatives of land reform. This involved an exploration of their community development work, particularly around issues of job creation, participation in decision-making, capacity building and sustainability. The thesis comes to the following conclusions. The first is that the establishment of PGRs have a significant positive impact on the local areas in which they are established. As a land-use, ecotourism based game reserves are an economically and ecologically desirable alternative to other land uses. Therefore the ecotourism based private game reserve industry with its extensive community development focus for farmworkers and local communities is a viable and sustainable alternative to conventional land reform. The second is that the Indalo PGRs development work has built capacity in the communities it has served. However, community participation, particularly in decision-making is limited and needs more attention if productive and sustainable development is to be achieved. Lastly, communities rely heavily on external support for their development and upliftment. However, the majority of the PGRs have/or are putting measures in place to ensure the continuation of community development projects to ensure the long-term sustainability of projects.

An analysis of security measures implemented on commercial private game reserves in LimpopoHerman, Dewald Gustav 29 November 2020 (has links)
South Africa presently experiences high levels of crime daily. Although crime is accepted as an everyday occurrence for its citizens, it affects the economy of the country. This study analysed security measures implemented on Commercial Private Game Reserves (CPGRs) in Limpopo and the impact of crime thereof. CPGRs are enclosed areas containing various species of fauna and flora. Visitors from domestic and foreign origins visit these reserves to enjoy nature and its tranquillity.
This study analysed the security measures to determine their effectiveness for CPGRs. The study further explored the use of security risk management strategies and risk assessments as crime reduction tools. The study was carried out using a case study research design. Data were collected by the researcher using three methods: observation, onsite checklists and semi-structured one-on-one interviews which were conducted on site. Validity and reliability indicate the trustworthiness of the study. The researcher reduced the data gathered through the use of thematic data analysis. Interviews were transcribed and themes were created and identified by the researcher.
The comprehensive data indicated the importance of a security risk manager on a CPGR. The research found that very few security risk managers are employed and that managers of security risks employed on CPGRs have various titles. However, while the CPGRs have similar risks, their risk reduction strategies vary. The most commonly used measures are people, physical and technological measures with each having various subdivisions.
The security measures implemented by CPGRs in the Limpopo province which were analysed are not formulated using a scientific approach as most properties do not make use of a formal security risk assessment. The study is deemed valuable as a model was developed from the findings that could be used by game reserves to guide them to apply relevant security measures.
A formal security programme is often limited due to financial constraints of the reserve or the reserve owners, however, not all strategies should be considered as a financial expense as much can be done without exhausting financial reserves.
The findings contributed to making recommendations to improve the overall security of CPGRs. This study encourages more research into the subject to improve the security industry and to stimulate the tourism industry. / Security Risk Management / M. Tech. (Security Management)
