A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF RETURNING AND NON-RETURNING STUDENTS FROM IRAN AND NIGERIA STUDYING IN THE UNITED STATES

Unknown Date (has links)
The migration of "human resources" from developing to developed countries can be an impediment to the developmental process of the sending nation. Students studying in the United States contribute to this problem, as large numbers of these students fail to return home when their studies finish. / This study attempted to discover the reasons that Iranian and Nigerian students studying in three Florida universities either return home or remain in the United States upon completion of their studies. Also, a model was devised to attempt to examine and predict the decision-making process of these students. / Findings of this study are: (1) The majority of Iranian students (52%) planned to stay in the United States temporarily due to mixed feelings toward the home country's situation. (2) Iranian students who planned to remain in the United States permanently (16.8%) emphasized economic and employment opportunities, and were married to American citizens. (3) Iranian students who planned to return home immediately (24.2%) when their studies are finished had high family and personal commitments at home. (4) Most Nigerian students planned to return home (70.8%) due to job guarantees at home. (5) Nigerian students who planned to remain in the United States temporarily did so because of enjoyment of the American lifestyle versus that of the home country. (6) Only one Nigerian student planned to remain in the United States permanently. His reason could not be distinguished from an analysis of the group. / Based on these findings, proper recommendations and policy implications were suggested to curb or at least reduce the number of students from both sending countries in the United States. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 43-07, Section: A, page: 2165. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Florida State University, 1982.

THE RANKING OF JOB INCUMBENTS USING CODAP OVERLAP VALUES TO COMPARE TASK INVENTORIES DEVELOPED BY A MODIFIED DELPHI TECHNIQUE AND A MORE TRADITIONAL METHOD

Unknown Date (has links)
This study examined the comparability of job-task lists generated using alternative methods. A task list generated through Traditional procedures was compared to a task list generated by using a modification of the Delphi technique. / Two sets of procedures were applied concurrently to the generation of task lists for the job of Clerk or Comptroller of the Circuit Court of Florida. Once each method had generated a list of task statements, the statements were reviewed and a subset of twelve tasks was identified which were rewritten to be identical. The results of the two generation procedures were task lists having 204 tasks on the traditionally developed list and 207 tasks on the modified Delphi technique developed list. / To assess the comparability of the two task lists, Spearman rank order correlations were calculated for three subsets of response data. Responses to the two total task lists, responses to the set of twelve identical task statements, and responses to the remaining unlike task statements were compared. The Comprehensive Occupational Data Analysis Programs (CODAP) were used to generate overlap values for the purpose of rankings the respondents for each subset of tasks. The results of the Spearman Rho calculations were Rho values of .799 (df = 57) for the total task list, .736 (df = 57) for the like item subset, and .799 (df = 57) for the remaining unlike tasks. All three comparisons revealed a significant association between the rankings of the subjects with p < .0001. / A second analysis was done on the aggregate number of tasks selected by each individual on each task list for each of the three subsets of tasks. Significant t-test values were found for the mean number of tasks selected for the total task list (t(116) = 21.79; p < .01) and for the unlike task statements (t(116) = 24.50; p < .01). / These results suggest that the two task lists are interchangeable and that alternative procedures can be proposed for the generations of job-task lists. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 43-07, Section: A, page: 2326. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Florida State University, 1982.

ALPHA-CHYMOTRYPSIN: A PROBE OF NUCLEOSOME FINE STRUCTURAL TOPOGRAPHY

Unknown Date (has links)
The protease (alpha)-chymotrypsin, specific for uncharged hydrophobic residues, was used to probe the fine structural topography of the nucleosome core. The consequences of proteolytic cleavages at specific histone sites were assessed in terms of effects upon the overall nucleohistone structural integrity. / Electrophoresis of histones from partially proteolyzed cores on 18% polyacrylamide slab gels containing SDS showed that H3 was rapidly digested by chymotrypsin, yielding a single product (CP1) approximately 112 residues long. Extensive digestion yielded a stable limit pattern of four major histone fragments ranging in size from 102-80 residues long. Comparative electrophoresis performed on gels containing 8 M urea, 5% acetic acid, and 6 mM triton X-100 established that other core histones were essentially resistant to digestion until the majority of H3 was degraded. Second dimension electrophoresis showed that CP1 migrated near H3 in the trition-acid-urea system. Also resolved by second dimension electrophoresis were two additional products that migrated near H4 and CP1 (CP2' and CP3'), respectively, in the SDS-dimension. / High pressure liquid chromatography peptide analyses confirmed that the major chymotryptic product, CP1, was derived from H3 and had an intact carboxy terminus. HPLC analyses of dansyl amino acids derived from CP1 made it possible to assign leucine 20 as the preferential chymotryptic cleavage site in H3. This is the only one of 72 possible chymotryptic sites in core histones that clearly is topographically accessible in native cores. Few and perhaps no sites are accessible in the other core histones. / Cleavage at leucine 20 in H3 promoted structural unfolding and induced changes in the core DNA winding angle. Circular dichroism and Raman spectroscopy, thermal denaturation, DNAse I digestion, and nucleo-histone electrophoresis studies were used to characterize these changes and indicated that non-basic histone-DNA interactions were essential for the maintenance of core structure and stability. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 43-07, Section: B, page: 2091. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Florida State University, 1982.
