The corn starch Avati Morotî food is of greater importance for the Paraguayan peasant family and general public as source of typical food in several country regions. In most cases, the producers of this type of maize using seeds its own production of cultivars generally from low productivity, susceptible to disease, pests, and long cycle.Considering the importance of this type of corn for food security the Instituto Paraguayo de Técnologia Agraria (IPTA) is working in the plant breeding for to get early crops, being more productive and with low cost of ownership for small producers cultivars. The objective of this study was to evaluate the existence of interactions between genotypes and environments, and estimate the parameters of adaptability and stability of hybrids of corn starch by the method of Lin and Binns (1988); estimate genetic and phenotypic parameters as the simple correlations, partial and track, the genetic divergence and relative contribution of genetic diversity to characters by the method of Singh (1981) for 49 genotypes of corn starch in three environments in eastern Paraguay. The experimental design was a randomized block design with three replications, with plot containing 25 plants. The analysis of variance showed significant difference for all traits in the locality of Choré with 1% level of significance by F test for the location of Capitan Miranda; however, grain yield (GY) and plant aspect (AP) were not significant. The locality Yjhovy the (PG) was significant at 5%. The analysis of variance showed a significant interaction for genotype by environment at the 5% significance level for the F test, for all traits except male flowering. Most features of the showed interaction of complex type. The adaptability and stability proved more adaptable and stable hybrids, being also the most productive. The 41and 24 materials were genotypes that contained the lowest values of Pi general. In all locations, there was a significant genetic variability for all traits, including productivity the exception of the number of caterpillar (NL) and empty cobs (EV), the grain yield (GY) correlates positively with plant height and percentage of grains to the location of Choré and Yjhovy, lower positive correlation with GY were found with a diameter of cob (DE) and ear length (EC).Features percentage of grains (Pg) and ear length (EC) are those with the highest direct effect on PG between the primary components and secondary components were between plant height (APL) and prolificacy (PROL), the most indicated for indirect selection for grain yield. In all locations, there was a significant genetic variability among genotypes, with genotypes 48 the most divergent between them. From the dendrogram nearest neighbor two groups were formed for the localities Capitan Miranda and Choré, although for Yjhovy three groups were formed and the method of UPGMA were, three and four groups for the localities Capitan Miranda, Chore and Yjhovy, characters male flowering (FM) and plant height (APL) were the main contributors to genetic divergence.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Luciana M Curty Machado.pdf: 1144944 bytes, checksum: ef7bbfda79792b701f520f5f33838f35 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-11-09 / The objectives were to evaluate the genetic parameters for the daily weight gain (GPD) of different families of Nile tilapia strain GIFT evaluated in fish farming at UEM/Codapar in Maringá and Sgarbi in Palotina, verify the occurrence of genotype-environment interaction and to compare the morphometric characteristics and performance of single sex populations of male tilapia strains GIFT® and Saint Peter reared in mixed system in Fish Culture Station of the Sgarbi, Paraná, Brazil. The cultivation was carried out during the period June to November 2011, totaling 160 days. The system used in the Fish Culture Station of the Sgarbi was a semi-intensive being adopted the density of 2.0 fish m-2. There were housed 480 fish of the GIFT strain and 1400 fish of the red hybrid, totaling 1880 animals, with an average weight of 15 g. The total GIFT population studied consisted of 720 fish, distributed in 19 families. There were used the complete pedigree information GIFT strain since its introduction in Brazil. For performance testing, two groups of fish previously identified with 240 and 480 specimens, were housed in fish farms ponds in Maringá and Palotina, respectively. The fish were distributed to have representatives of all families in both environments. After rearing period the fish assessed in Maringá and Palotina had a final weight average of 417 g and 280 g, respectively. The covariance components, genetic parameters and phenotypic were estimated proceeding to Bayesian inference, using the computer system MTGSAM. There were used the credibility interval (IC) at 5% probability to determine the differences of genetic parameters and variance components in the local culture. The additive genetic variance to the GPD showed values of 0.113 and 0.045 and the residual variance was 0.036 and 0.024, respectively for Maringá and Palotina. The phenotypic variance estimated for GPD in Maringá was higher than that Palotina. The heritability (h2) of the GPD in Maringá (h2 = 0.707) and Palotina (h2=0.575) were considered high with wide credibility intervals. The genetic correlations and phenotypic to the GPD in Maringá and Palotina had values of 0.20 and 0.13, respectively. The estimates of Spearman correlation, based on breeding values for the individual GPD (0.48) and GPD family (0.59) were significant. The estimates of the correlations of genetic parameters to GIFT strains indicate the presence of genotype-environment interaction. The daily weight gains of tilapia in local assessed are characterized as distinct, and may be influenced by different sets of genes. There were collected and individually assessed 190 and 102 tilapia males, respectively of the GIFT and Saint Peter® strains. The average final weight and daily weight gain among the three genetic groups of the GIFT strain showed no significant differences. However all groups of GIFT strain showed average values of performance and morphometric characteristics superior to hybrid strain Saint Peter®. There was a significant difference only for the height of the GIFT strain of tilapia group higher than the bottom. The morphometric characteristics and growth performance are superior to the GIFT strain, regardless of genetic group, compared to Saint Peter®, except for the head length/standard length of tilapia evaluated.

Climate change adaptation and economic valuation of local pig genetic resources in communal production systems of South Africa

Madzimure, James January 2011 (has links)
The broad objective of the study was to determine the economic value of local pigs in marketand subsistence-oriented production systems in communal areas of Southern Africa. Data were collected from 288 households to investigate farmer perceptions, effects on pig production and handling of disease outbreaks such as classical swine fever (CSF) in market- and subsistenceoriented production systems. The utilisation of local pigs in these market- and subsistenceoriented production systems in improving people‟s welfare was evaluated. Climate change was identified by farmers in these production systems as a major constraint to pig production hence an experiment was carried out in the hottest season to determine diurnal heat-related physiological and behavioural responses in Large White (LW) and South African local pigs. The same genotypes were used to determine effects of diurnal heat-related stress on their growth performance. Choice experiment was done to determine farmer preferences for local pig traits and implicit prices for these traits in CSF-affected and unaffected areas that were under subsistence- and market-oriented production systems. In this experiment, the importance of heat tolerance was assessed relative to other productive and climate change adaptation traits. Significantly more pigs were culled in the CSF-affected areas that were market-oriented (8.0 ± 1.76) than subsistence-oriented (4.1 ± 1.00) production system. The risk of parasites and disease challenges was high in subsistence-oriented production system and coastal areas. In both production systems, CSF was perceived as destructive since the culling of pigs affected pork availability and income generation. The high risk of disease outbreaks and threat of climate change caused farmers in subsistence-oriented production system to select local pigs for their adaptive traits while those in the market-oriented production system focused on productive imported pigs. Farmers (83 %) indicated that they wanted pig genotypes that were adapted to climate change effects such as hot conditions. Local pigs were found to have superior heat tolerance over LW pigs (P < 0.05) in terms of lower heart rate and skin surface temperature. Frequency per day and duration for behavioural heat loss activities such as wallowing, sleeping in a prostrate posture and sprawling in slurry were also lower (P < 0.05) for local than LW pigs. The superiority of heat tolerance of local over LW pigs was further confirmed by their uncompromised growth performance under high diurnal temperatures. The Pearson‟s product moment correlation coefficient between temperature and feed conversion ratio for LW pigs was strongly positive (r = 0.50; P < 0.001) unlike the weak and positive correlation for local pigs (r = 0.20; P < 0.05). There was a quadratic relationship between temperature and average daily gain (ADG) for both pig genotypes. The regression coefficients for ADG were higher (P < 0.001) for LW than local pigs. It was concluded that at high ambient temperatures, performance of local pigs was less compromised than for LW pigs. Although local pigs were found to be heat tolerant, results of choice experiment showed that this trait was not selected for relative to other traits. Keeping pigs that required bought-in feeds, fell sick often and produced low pork quality (eating quality based on farmer perceptions) negatively affected farmers‟ livelihoods more in subsistence- than market-oriented production system. Farmers in market-oriented production system derived more benefit from productive traits such as heavier slaughter weights and large litter size than subsistence-oriented farmers. Under the subsistence-oriented production system, farmers in CSF-affected areas placed high prices on adaptive traits than the unaffected areas. Subsistence-oriented farmers who were affected by CSF wanted a total compensation price of R10 944.00 (USD1563.43) for keeping a pig genotype with unfavourable traits when compared to R4235.00 (USD605.00) for their CSF-unaffected counterparts. Implicit prices for traits could not be determined for market-oriented production system. It was concluded that farmers in CSFaffected areas placed high economic values on pig traits than farmers from the CSF-unaffected areas. The findings suggest that adapted local pigs can be promoted in subsistence-oriented production systems while productive imported pigs and their crosses with local pigs can be kept in market-oriented production systems.

CARACTERIZACIÓN, TIPIFICACIÓN, SELECCIÓN Y MEJORA GENÉTICA DE VARIEDADES VALENCIANAS DE TOMATE

Figás Moreno, María del Rosario 13 March 2021 (has links)
[EN] The work carried out in this thesis aims to contribute to the valorisation of the traditional Valencian tomato varieties. First, the characterization of a collection of 69 entries of Valencian tomato varieties of eight varietal types ('De Borseta', 'Cherry', 'Cor',' De Penjar ',' Plana ',' De Pruna ', 'Redona' and 'Valenciana') with 64 conventional descriptors and 38 characteristics of the Tomato Analyzer. It has been shown that the complementary use of the Tomato Analyzer's phenomic tool is a new strategy for the characterization and classification of local tomato varieties, as well as for the distinction between related varietal types. Despite the widespread use of standardized tomato descriptors, there is little information about the environmental effects on the values of the descriptors and their inheritance. The evaluation of 12 entries of tomato from seven varietal types in three different environments (conventional open air cultivation, open air ecological cultivation and greenhouse) through the use of 36 descriptors, has allowed to establish the influence of the cultivation system on these descriptors, being a wide range of variation, and demonstrating its usefulness to describe tomato materials, their diversity and relationships. On the other hand, it can be very interesting to associate healthy characteristics such as a high content of vitamins or antioxidant substances beneficial to health. The analysis of 69 Valencian local tomato entries from eight varietal types for characters as content in different sugars, acids and antioxidants revealed significant differences between the varietal types tested for most of the characteristics. The varietal types 'Cherry' and 'De Penjar' had higher dry matter, content of soluble solids, acidity, flavor index, ß-carotene, ascorbic acid, total phenolic and antioxidant activity than the other groups. The results obtained will be useful for the differentiation, improvement and selection of local tomato varieties with improved organoleptic properties. Characterization and typification studies of traditional tomato varieties are essential to detect factors that make it difficult to value and promote commercial exploitation. In this sense, within this thesis 3 populations of tomato 'Valenciana d'El Perelló' have been characterized. The lower productivity of the selections tested compared to the commercial control seems to be due to a concentration of the production in the first 2-3 bunches of the plant. In the program of selection and improvement of the tomato 'Valenciana d'El Perelló' that has been made, selections are available with a much more uniform fruit set distribution. On the other hand, a very interesting way to enhance their crop is to obtain varieties resistant to ToMV, deriving a set of lineages of this tomato with the Tm22 gene that confers resistance to ToMV. Regarding the adaptation to the local agroclimatic conditions of the traditional varieties, this characteristic is fundamental of this type of varieties. Thus, tomato plants of the 'De Penjar' type have traditionally been grown in the Mediterranean region. These materials are adapted to open field conditions under conditions of low resource consumption. However, greenhouse cultivation is expanding due to the increase in demand. The evaluation of 12 varieties (seven traditional entrances, three selections and two hybrids) of the 'De Penjar' type in outdoor cultivation and in greenhouse cultivation has revealed a high impact of the cultivation environment on the morphological, agronomic and chemical properties of varieties of tomato 'De Penjar' and suggests the need to develop specific varieties adapted to greenhouse cultivation. / Figás Moreno, MDR.
