Ao versar sobre o tema cidades, buscou-se entender o que é o espaço urbano e, em seguida, o que é a rede urbana. Nessa busca, apresentou-se a rede urbana da Bahia, a fim de que fossem oferecidos os subsídios teóricos para o desenvolvimento do estudo. Nesse sentindo, apontou-se como estão estabelecidas as relações socioespaciais na Região Litoral Norte, a partir da compreensão dos contextos econômicos nela presentes. Ao tratar, especificamente, de Alagoinhas, foi realizada uma revisão quanto à formação, ocupação e expansão histórica da cidade. Em conjunto, as informações possibilitaram o entendimento da cidade de Alagoinhas enquanto um centro urbano regional, uma vez que se discutiu de que maneira e até que ponto a cidade coloca-se como centro redistribuidor de bens e serviços para a área sob sua influência. Na medida em que foram apresentados dados sobre a população, educação (ensino superior), saúde e transportes, foram analisadas as variáveis que possibilitam a inserção desta cidade como um centro urbano cuja funcionalidade na região relaciona-se à sua centralidade, enquanto elo entre as pequenas cidades e os grandes centros urbanos. Assegurando a produção, a circulação e o consumo do processo de acumulação capitalista. O estudo revelou que Alagoinhas é mais um espaço cuja especialização funcional da produção e distribuição de bens e serviços a coloca ora como um centro intermediário (cidade média) na hierarquia urbana do estado da Bahia, ora como centro regional na Região Econômica Litoral Norte da Bahia. / ABSTRACT This research examines the historical relationship between Alagoinhas and cities of the North Coast of the Economic Region of Bahia. Talking about the history of the cities, we try to understand what the urban space is, then what the urban network is. In this search, we show the urban network of Bahia, to offer subsidies for the development of this theoretical work. From the understanding of economic situation in the North region, it indicates itself how the things are working. Analyzing, specifically, Alagoinhas, we tried to find information about historical occupation and expansion of the city. Putting all these information together, we can be able to understand what is the deal of Alagoinhas as a regional urban center, we have discussed how and what for the city serves as a center of distribution of goods or services to the area under its influence. There is information about the population, education (higher education), health and transport, and also considered the variables that allow the inclusion of this as an urban center which feature in the region, related to its centrality as a link between small towns and large urban centers, ensuring the production, circulation and consumption of the process of capitalist accumulation. The study revealed that Alagoinhas is an area where functional specialization of production and distribution of goods and services places the city either as a central intermediary in the urban hierarchy of the state of Bahia, sometimes as the main center, in the North Coast of the Economic Region of Bahia.
