The purpose of this thesis is to describe, in detail, the geology of the Lake Wasa Mining Corporation property in Beauchastel township, Quebec, with particular emphasis on a petrographic and mineragraphic study of selected drill cores from both surface and underground drilling on the property. During the summer of 1949, the Geological Survey of Canada carried out a reconnaissance survey of the east coast of Labrador between Hamilton Inlet and Hopedale. Dr. E. H. Kranck, Professor of Petrology, McGill University, was the leader of this party. Dr Kranck had previously examined the rocks of the coastal region in 1937, as a member of the Finland-Labrador Expedition, and in 1939 as a leader of a second expedition from Finland. [...]

The Canadian Shield is predominantly composed of rocks of Precambrian age. It contains numerous belts and isolated masses of volcanic and sedimentary rocks in which many of the gold and base metal deposits of Canada are found. These however, represent only a small part of the "Shield". The· bulk of it is composed of gneisses and schists, believed to bave been formed from ancient sedimentary, volcanic, and plutonic rocks, by metamorphism. [...]

The area described in this thesis lies in the "Gold Belt" of north western Quebec, a district which, although named for the attractive gold deposits, has become an important producer of base metals, such as copper and zinc. The map-area and the surrounding region lie within the deeply eroded Precambrian Shield, which is made up chiefly of ancient Archaean volcanic rocks, and old crystalline intrusives. [...]

In the last decade geologists have made increasing use of phase equilibrium studies in synthetic systems to provide the fundamental data for the interpretation and understanding of the occurrence of minerals and mineral assemblages. The economic geologist has directed considerable study into the phase relations of the Fe-Ni-S system as a large number of the phases are found as minerals, which in some cases constitute important sources of nickel, iron and related metals. The Rapitan Group was studied during the 1965 field season as part of Operation Selwyn, an investigation by the Geological Survey of Canada under the direction of Dr. H. Gabrielse of the geology of the northern Cordillera. [...]

Stromatoporoids from the Esterhazy Shaft, Saskatchewan, collected from the Duperow formation (lower Upper Devonian), Souris River formation, First Red Bed and Dawson Bay formation (Middle Devonian) are found between depths of 1,987 feet and 3,058. 9 feet. [...]

The Rioux QUarry is located in the Sutton map-area within the western part of the Appalachian fold belt in Southern Quebec (Eakins, 1963). It lies about half way between the western margin of this belt as defined by Logan's Line and the major tectonic axis of the Sutton-Green Mountain anticlinorium. [...]

New stratigraphic evidence strongly suggests that the areally extensive "Lower Schist" and "Keno Hill Quartzite" (informal names), formerly included in the Precambrian Yukon Group, are Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous respectively. [...]

During the month of September 1951, the writer mapped an area for the Quebec Bureau of Mines in order to complete the Three Rivers Map sheet. Dr. T.H. Clark has already mapped the greater part of the area which is underlain by paleozoic sediments. In the North-West corner, exposures of Pre-Cambrian remained unmapped.
