Facies mapping of the Vaal Reef placer as an aid to remnant pillar extraction and stope width optimisation

The Vaal Reef placer is situated on the unconformable junction of the Strathmore and Stilfontein formations of the Johannesburg Subgroup. Within the South Division of the Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining company lease, the Vaal Reef Placer is shown to be composed of several different units. Each unit exhibits its own specific characteristics and trend direction which can be used to establish distinct "Reef packages". These packages can be mapped in such a way as to provide a preliminary lithofacies map for the Vaal Reef Placer. The delineation of such geologically homogenous zones, and the development of a suitable depositional model, can be utilised in several ways. The characteristics of a particular zone are shown to influence the control of stoping width, evaluation of remnant pillars and the geostatistical methodology of evaluating current and future ore reserve blocks.

A comparative study of metamorphosed supracrustal rocks from the western Namaqualand metamorphic complex

Bibliography: pages 346-370. / A regional study of highly metamorphosed supracrustal rocks was undertaken in the western portions of the Namaqualand Metamorphic Complex. The study area was essentially restricted to a north-south section some 50 kilometres wide and 220 kilometres long. Eight east-west-trending belts of supracrustal rocks were examined, together with several smaller paragneiss remnants, in an area dominated by quartzo-feldspathic gneisses of granitic composition. The supracrustal rocks were classified into seven major lithological groups: quartzitic rocks, metapelitic and metapsammitic rocks, quartzo feldspathic rocks, metabasites, metacarbonate rocks, magnesium-rich cordierite rocks and iron formations. Further subdivision, based on variations in mineral constituents within each group, also occurred, as well as the presence of lithologies with compositions transitional between certain groups. The various supracrustal sequences were subdivided into formations containing minor distinctive members on an informal lithostratigraphic basis. Correlation between the major supracrustal belts was then undertaken. Four subgroups were identified across the study area, comprising a quartzo feldspathic gneiss subgroup and an overlying feldspathic quartzite/garnetcordierite gneiss subgroup that both predominate in the southern and central part of the area, a glassy quartzite/mica- sillimanite schist subgroup that predominates in the northern part, and a cordierite gneiss/metacarbonate subgroup that is restricted to the Geselskapbank synform. The supracrustal rocks appear to have been emplaced on a basement of augen gneisses. This relationship is, however, complicated by the intrusion of granit i c rocks within the contact zone.

A Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of Science; University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg; for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy / A volcanological study of the Onverwacht Group in the southwestern part of the Archaean (-3.5 - 3.2 Ga) Barberton greenstone belt (BGB), South Africa, shows that volcanic extrusion rates of the Komati and Hooggenoeg Formations must have been high to have maintained the degree of submarine sheet flooding that is evident. It is concluded that the volcanic attributes of the Komati and Hooggenoeg Formations are not typical of MOR crust, as has been claimed, but rather closely resemble those of modern oceanic plateaus. The shear-zone-bound basal contact of the Komati Formation suggests that the top of the ancient oceanic plateau was allochthonously emplaced and delaminated from its basal (intrusive) part. The significance of unconformities in the development of Witwatersrand gold and uranium placers

Most of the economic gold and uranium placers are developed on low angle disconformities in the Central Rand Group and concentrations of gold and uranium are usually at their optimum on unconformity surfaces. Examples include the Kimberley Reef and South Reef of the East Rand, the Main Reef Leader of the Central Rand, the Carbon Leader of the Carletonville goldfield, the Vaal Reef of the Klerksdorp goldfield and the Basal/Steyn placers of the Welkom goldfield. The individual goldfields represent fluvial fans which are composed of a large number of tectonogenetic sedimentary packages separated by unconformities. The tectonic responses between cycles of sedimentation produced unconformities and tectonically controlled cyclic sedimentation is one of the key factors culminating in the preparation and deposition of auriferous placers within the Witwatersrand succession. Unconformities, which represent breaks in sedimentation, result in the preconditioning of palaeosurfaces and redistribution of sediments and heavy minerals on them. Winnowing of sands produced heavy mineral residual accumulations on erosion surfaces which were generally preserved by small-pebble lags or algal mats. Reworking of units truncated by the unconformities provided additional gold, uranium and heavy minerals to unconformity surfaces.
