Regions, Distances and Graphs

We present new approaches to define and analyze geometric graphs. The region-counting distances, introduced by Demaine, Iacono and Langerman, associate to any pair of points (p,q) the number of items of a dataset S contained in a region R(p,q) surrounding (p,q). We define region-counting disks and circles, and study the complexity of these objects. Algorithms to compute epsilon-approximations of region-counting distances and approximations of region-counting circles are presented. We propose a definition of the locality for properties of geometric graphs. We measure the local density of graphs using the region-counting distances between pairs of vertices, and we use this density to define local properties of classes of graphs. We illustrate the locality by introducing the local diameter of geometric graphs: we define it as the upper bound on the size of the shortest path between any pair of vertices, expressed as a function of the density of the graph around those vertices. We determine the local diameter of several well-studied graphs such as the Theta-graph, the Ordered Theta-graph and the Skip List Spanner. We also show that various operations, such as path and point queries using geometric graphs as data structures, have complexities which can be expressed as local properties. A family of proximity graphs, called Empty Region Graphs (ERG) is presented. The vertices of an ERG are points in the plane, and two points are connected if their neighborhood, defined by a region, does not contain any other point. The region defining the neighborhood of two points is a parameter of the graph. This family of graphs includes several known proximity graphs such as Nearest Neighbor Graphs, Beta-Skeletons or Theta-Graphs. We concentrate on ERGs that are invariant under translations, rotations and uniform scaling of the vertices. We give conditions on the region defining an ERG to ensure a number of properties that might be desirable in applications, such as planarity, connectivity, triangle-freeness, cycle-freeness, bipartiteness and bounded degree. These conditions take the form of what we call tight regions: maximal or minimal regions that a region must contain or be contained in to make the graph satisfy a given property. We show that every monotone property has at least one corresponding tight region; we discuss possibilities and limitations of this general model for constructing a graph from a point set. We introduce and analyze sigma-local graphs, based on a definition of locality by Erickson, to illustrate efficient construction algorithm on a subclass of ERGs.

Critical values in continuum and dependent percolation

In the first part of this thesis I consider site and bond percolation on a Random Connection Model and prove that for a wide range of connection functions the critical site probability is strictly greater than the critical bond probability and use this fact to improve previously known non-strict inequalities to strict inequalities. In the second part I consider percolation on the even phase of a Random Sequential Adsorption model and prove that the critical intensity is finite and strictly bigger than 1. Both of these main results make use of an enhancement technique.

A Geometric Approach for Inference on Graphical Models

We formulate a novel approach to infer conditional independence models or Markov structure of a multivariate distribution. Specifically, our objective is to place informative prior distributions over graphs (decomposable and unrestricted) and sample efficiently from the induced posterior distribution. We also explore the idea of factorizing according to complete sets of a graph; which implies working with a hypergraph that cannot be retrieved from the graph alone. The key idea we develop in this paper is a parametrization of hypergraphs using the geometry of points in $R^m$. This induces informative priors on graphs from specified priors on finite sets of points. Constructing hypergraphs from finite point sets has been well studied in the fields of computational topology and random geometric graphs. We develop the framework underlying this idea and illustrate its efficacy using simulations. / Dissertation

Random Structures

For many combinatorial objects we can associate a natural probability distribution on the members of the class, and we can then call the resulting class a class of random structures. Random structures form good models of many real world problems, in particular real networks and disordered media. For many such problems, the systems under consideration can be very large, and we often care about whether a property holds most of the time. In particular, for a given class of random structures, we say that a property holds with high probability if the probability that that property holds tends to one as the size of the structures increase. We examine several classes of random structures with real world applications, and look at some properties of each that hold with high probability. First we look at percolation in 3 dimensional lattices, giving a method for producing rigorous confidence intervals on the percolation threshold. Next we look at random geometric graphs, first examining the connectivity thresholds of nearest neighbour models, giving good bounds on the threshold for a new variation on these models useful for modelling wireless networks, and then look at the cop number of the Gilbert model. Finally we look at the structure of random sum-free sets, in particular examining what the possible densities of such sets are, what substructures they can contain, and what superstructures they belong to.

Optimization in Geometric Graphs: Complexity and Approximation

We consider several related problems arising in geometric graphs. In particular, we investigate the computational complexity and approximability properties of several optimization problems in unit ball graphs and develop algorithms to find exact and approximate solutions. In addition, we establish complexity-based theoretical justifications for several greedy heuristics. Unit ball graphs, which are defined in the three dimensional Euclidian space, have several application areas such as computational geometry, facility location and, particularly, wireless communication networks. Efficient operation of wireless networks involves several decision problems that can be reduced to well known optimization problems in graph theory. For instance, the notion of a \virtual backbone" in a wire- less network is strongly related to a minimum connected dominating set in its graph theoretic representation. Motivated by the vastness of application areas, we study several problems including maximum independent set, minimum vertex coloring, minimum clique partition, max-cut and min-bisection. Although these problems have been widely studied in the context of unit disk graphs, which are the two dimensional version of unit ball graphs, there is no established result on the complexity and approximation status for some of them in unit ball graphs. Furthermore, unit ball graphs can provide a better representation of real networks since the nodes are deployed in the three dimensional space. We prove complexity results and propose solution procedures for several problems using geometrical properties of these graphs. We outline a matching-based branch and bound solution procedure for the maximum k-clique problem in unit disk graphs and demonstrate its effectiveness through computational tests. We propose using minimum bottleneck connected dominating set problem in order to determine the optimal transmission range of a wireless network that will ensure a certain size of "virtual backbone". We prove that this problem is NP-hard in general graphs but solvable in polynomial time in unit disk and unit ball graphs. We also demonstrate work on theoretical foundations for simple greedy heuristics. Particularly, similar to the notion of "best" approximation algorithms with respect to their approximation ratios, we prove that several simple greedy heuristics are "best" in the sense that it is NP-hard to recognize the gap between the greedy solution and the optimal solution. We show results for several well known problems such as maximum clique, maximum independent set, minimum vertex coloring and discuss extensions of these results to a more general class of problems. In addition, we propose a "worst-out" heuristic based on edge contractions for the max-cut problem and provide analytical and experimental comparisons with a well known "best-in" approach and its modified versions.

A Non-Asymptotic Approach to the Analysis of Communication Networks: From Error Correcting Codes to Network Properties

This dissertation has its focus on two different topics: 1. non-asymptotic analysis of polar codes as a new paradigm in error correcting codes with very promising features, and 2. network properties for wireless networks of practical size. In its first part, we investigate properties of polar codes that can be potentially useful in real-world applications. We start with analyzing the performance of finite-length polar codes over the binary erasure channel (BEC), while assuming belief propagation (BP) as the decoding method. We provide a stopping set analysis for the factor graph of polar codes, where we find the size of the minimum stopping set. Our analysis along with bit error rate (BER) simulations demonstrates that finite-length polar codes show superior error floor performance compared to the conventional capacity-approaching coding techniques. Motivated by good error floor performance, we introduce a modified version of BP decoding while employing a guessing algorithm to improve the BER performance. Each application may impose its own requirements on the code design. To be able to take full advantage of polar codes in practice, a fundamental question is which practical requirements are best served by polar codes. For example, we will see that polar codes are inherently well-suited for rate-compatible applications and they can provably achieve the capacity of time-varying channels with a simple rate-compatible design. This is in contrast to LDPC codes for which no provably universally capacity-achieving design is known except for the case of the erasure channel. This dissertation investigates different approaches to applications such as UEP, rate-compatible coding, and code design over parallel sub-channels (non-uniform error correction). Furthermore, we consider the idea of combining polar codes with other coding schemes, in order to take advantage of polar codes' best properties while avoiding their shortcomings. Particularly, we propose, and then analyze, a polar code-based concatenated scheme to be used in Optical Transport Networks (OTNs) as a potential real-world application The second part of the dissertation is devoted to the analysis of finite wireless networks as a fundamental problem in the area of wireless networking. We refer to networks as being finite when the number of nodes is less than a few hundred. Today, due to the vast amount of literature on large-scale wireless networks, we have a fair understanding of the asymptotic behavior of such networks. However, in real world we have to face finite networks for which the asymptotic results cease to be valid. Here we study a model of wireless networks, represented by random geometric graphs. In order to address a wide class of the network's properties, we study the threshold phenomena. Being extensively studied in the asymptotic case, the threshold phenomena occurs when a graph theoretic property (such as connectivity) of the network experiences rapid changes over a specific interval of the underlying parameter. Here, we find an upper bound for the threshold width of finite line networks represented by random geometric graphs. These bounds hold for all monotone properties of such networks. We then turn our attention to an important non-monotone characteristic of line networks which is the Medium Access (MAC) layer capacity, defined as the maximum number of possible concurrent transmissions. Towards this goal, we provide a linear time algorithm which finds a maximal set of concurrent non-interfering transmissions and further derive lower and upper bounds for the cardinality of the set. Using simulations, we show that these bounds serve as reasonable estimates for the actual value of the MAC-layer capacity.

Computational And Combinatorial Problems On Some Geometric Proximity Graphs

In this thesis, we focus on the study of computational and combinatorial problems on various geometric proximity graphs. Delaunay and Gabriel graphs are widely studied geometric proximity structures. These graphs have been extensively studied for their applications in wireless networks. Motivated by the applications in localized wireless routing, relaxed versions of these graphs known as Locally Delaunay Graphs (LDGs) and Locally Gabriel Graphs(LGGs) were proposed. A geometric graph G=(V,E)is called a Locally Gabriel Graph if for every( u,v) ϵ E the disk with uv as diameter does not contain any neighbor of u or v in G. Thus, two edges (u, v) and(u, w)where u,v,w ϵ V conflict with each other if ∠uwv ≥ or ∠uvw≥π and cannot co-exist in an LGG. We propose another generalization of LGGs called Generalized locally Gabriel Graphs(GLGGs)in the context when certain edges are forbidden in the graph. For a given geometric graph G=(V,E), we define G′=(V,E′) as GLGG if G′is an LGG and E′⊆E. Unlike a Gabriel Graph ,there is no unique LGG or GLGG for a given point set because no edge is necessarily included or excluded. This property allows us to choose an LGG/GLGG that optimizes a parameter of interest in the graph. While Gabriel graphs are planar graphs, there exist LGGs with super linear number of edges. Also, there exist point sets where a Gabriel graph has dilation of Ω(√n)and there exist LGGs on the same point sets with dilation O(1). We study these graphs for various parameters like edge complexity(the maximum number of edges in these graphs),size of an independent set and dilation. We show that computing an edge maximum GLGG for a given problem instance is NP-hard and also APX-hard. We also show that computing an LGG on a given point set with minimum dilation is NP-hard. Then, we give an algorithm to verify whether a given geometric graph G=(V,E)is an LGG with running time O(ElogV+ V). We show that any LGG on n vertices has an independent set of size Ω(√nlogn). We show that there exists point sets with n points such that any LGG on it has dilation Ω(√n) that matches with the known upper bound. Then, we study some greedy heuristics to compute LGGs with experimental evaluation. Experimental evaluations for the points on a uniform grid and random point sets suggest that there exist LGGs with super-linear number of edges along with an independent set of near-linear size. Unit distance graphs(UDGs) are well studied geometric graphs. In this graph, an edge exists between two points if and only if the Euclidean distance between the points is unity. UDGs have been studied extensively for various properties most notably for their edge complexity and chromatic number. These graphs have also been studied for various special point sets most notably the case when the points are in convex position. Note that the UDGs form a sub class of the LGGs. UDGs/LGGs on convex point sets have O(nlogn) edges. The best known lower bound on the edge complexity of these graphs is 2n−7 when all the points are in convex position. A bipartite graph is called an ordered bipartite graph when the vertex set in each partition has a total order on its vertices. We introduce a family of ordered bipartite graphs with restrictions on some paths called path restricted ordered bi partite graphs (PRBGs)and show that their study is motivated by LGGs and UDGs on convex point sets. We show that a PRBG can be extracted from the UDGs/LGGs on convex point sets. First, we characterize a special kind of paths in PRBGs called forward paths, then we study some structural properties of these graphs. We show that a PRBG on n vertices has O(nlogn) edges and the bound is tight. It gives an alternate proof of O(nlogn)upper bound for the maximum number of edges in UDGs/LGGs on convex point sets. We study PRBGs with restrictions to the length of the forward paths and show an improved bound on the edge complexity when the length of the longest forward path is bounded. Then, we study the hierarchical structure amongst these graphs classes. Notably, we show that the class of UDGs on convex point sets is a strict sub class of LGGs on convex point sets.

Algorithmes d'apprentissage statistique pour l'analyse géométrique et topologique de données / Statistical learning algorithms for geometric and topological data analysis

Dans cette thèse, on s'intéresse à des algorithmes d'analyse de données utilisant des marches aléatoires sur des graphes de voisinage, ou graphes géométriques aléatoires, construits à partir des données. On sait que les marches aléatoires sur ces graphes sont des approximations d'objets continus appelés processus de diffusion. Dans un premier temps, nous utilisons ce résultat pour proposer un nouvel algorithme de partitionnement de données flou de type recherche de modes. Dans cet algorithme, on définit les paquets en utilisant les propriétés d'un certain processus de diffusion que l'on approche par une marche aléatoire sur un graphe de voisinage. Après avoir prouvé la convergence de notre algorithme, nous étudions ses performances empiriques sur plusieurs jeux de données. Nous nous intéressons ensuite à la convergence des mesures stationnaires des marches aléatoires sur des graphes géométriques aléatoires vers la mesure stationnaire du processus de diffusion limite. En utilisant une approche basée sur la méthode de Stein, nous arrivons à quantifier cette convergence. Notre résultat s'applique en fait dans un cadre plus général que les marches aléatoires sur les graphes de voisinage et nous l'utilisons pour prouver d'autres résultats : par exemple, nous arrivons à obtenir des vitesses de convergence pour le théorème central limite. Dans la dernière partie de cette thèse, nous utilisons un concept de topologie algébrique appelé homologie persistante afin d'améliorer l'étape de "pooling" dans l'approche "sac-de-mots" pour la reconnaissance de formes 3D. / In this thesis, we study data analysis algorithms using random walks on neighborhood graphs, or random geometric graphs. It is known random walks on such graphs approximate continuous objects called diffusion processes. In the first part of this thesis, we use this approximation result to propose a new soft clustering algorithm based on the mode seeking framework. For our algorithm, we want to define clusters using the properties of a diffusion process. Since we do not have access to this continuous process, our algorithm uses a random walk on a random geometric graph instead. After proving the consistency of our algorithm, we evaluate its efficiency on both real and synthetic data. We then deal tackle the issue of the convergence of invariant measures of random walks on random geometric graphs. As these random walks converge to a diffusion process, we can expect their invariant measures to converge to the invariant measure of this diffusion process. Using an approach based on Stein's method, we manage to obtain quantitfy this convergence. Moreover, the method we use is more general and can be used to obtain other results such as convergence rates for the Central Limit Theorem. In the last part of this thesis, we use the concept of persistent homology, a concept of algebraic topology, to improve the pooling step of the bag-of-words approach for 3D shapes.
