A partir da delimitação destes saberes no século XIX procurou-se compreender a definição do seu objeto, a mulher, bem como explicar em que os conhecimentos produzidos por estas especialidades diferem de uma tradição cultural a respeito da natureza feminina que lhes é anterior,bem como o impacto que tiveram na vida e na auto-representação das mulheres / Abstract: This work deals with the establishment of a medicine of woman, that is, the emergence of two specialties geared toward knowledge of the female body: obstetrics and gynecology. In looking at the constitution of these two specifics forms of knowledge in the 19th century, I seek an understanding of the way in wich their object - woman- is defined. I also attempt to explain how these forms of knowledge came to difer from an earlier cultural tradition and its views of woman's nature and what impact they had on women's lives ando modes of self-representation / Doutorado / Doutor em História
