A random sample of one hundred-eighty seven college students currently enrolled at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (V.P.I. & S.U.) with living grandparents was utilized in an attempt to verify the existence of various styles of grandparenting and to test the relationship between reported grandparenting style and specified variables. Verification of the existence of distinct grandparenting styles was determined from factor analysis of selected item responses. Five distinct grandparenting styles were identified, corresponding to the five styles described by Neugarten and Weinstein (1964). The Formal Style was most frequently identified, however, this difference was not statistically significant at the .O5 level. Grandparent health, as well as sex and sibling position of the grandchild were found to significantly influence the adoption of particular grandparenting styles. Hypotheses pertaining to the influence of kinship and sex of the grandparent were not supported. General patterns and modes of contact between grandparent and grandchild were also investigated. / Master of Science

While many studies have investigated grandparenthood from the point of view of the grandparent, few have considered this issue from the perspective of the grandchild. In this respect, a number of variables (i.e., grandchild age and gender, parents' marital status, and grandparents' age, gender, education, kinship position, residential proximity to and frequency of visiting with grandchildren, perceived influence on the grandchild, style of grandparenting, and relationship with the parents) were investigated as determinants of the quality of the grandparent-grandchild relationship in a sample of 171 adolescents and young adults. It was found that different sets of variables operated for different grandparents to predict the quality of their relationships with grandchildren.

The Lumbee people of southeastern North Carolina have traditionally had a strong grandparent/grandchild relationship which assisted the Lumbee child to develop into a productive citizen within the tribe. An investigation was conducted utilizing selected Lumbee tribal members to ascertain their recollected perceptions of their grandparent/grandchild relationship. The following four values concepts were utilized by Lumbee grandparents to assist the productive development of their grandchildren: (1) awareness of the child, (2) acceptance of the individual, (3) sharing of oneself as defined by time and energy, and (4) freedom of personal choice. This traditional developmental process practiced among the Lumbee Indians has been drastically altered by wage labor, agri-business, and the American educational system causing the deterioration of the Lumbee family.
