Causally Appropriate Graphical Modelling for Time Series with Applications to Economics, Ecology and Environmental Science

Meurk, Carla Siobhan January 2005 (has links)
I apply the GMTS approach to graphical modelling of time series to data sets from economics, ecology and environmental science. This approach improves on traditional approaches to modelling insofar as it selects the most parsimonius model. I improve on this approach by removing some redundancies in the GMTS approach. However, a bias in terms of which links are selected means that it is unlikely that this model will select the best causal model.

O exemplo da ilha Montão de Trigo (SP) / Chorématique, islands and archipelagoes: A theory for graphical modelling; the example of Montão de Trigo Island (SP)

Menegatto, Matheus Sartori 23 October 2017 (has links)
O objetivo principal deste trabalho é demonstrar a especificidade do universo insular. / This work shows the specific feature of the islands. To do so, we used the concepts of insularity, maritime dimension, coastal condition, sense of belonging to an island and archipelagic nature, that can describe different situations related to the islands. The main idea was to present these concepts by using some graphical depictions, which can go beyond the simple analogy with geographical reality that the maps usually present; by using, therefore, a method that could argue with images instead of words: the Chorématique, developed by the French geographer Roger Brunet. Firstly, with the current representation possibilities in terms of geometry, Brunet proposed some basic or structural images that can be used (separately or jointly) in different situations to show the most important aspects of a region. By applying this method to demonstrate the island distinctiveness, we created some basic images as well as Brunet done. Then, we presented a graphic model that shows the essential geography of Montão de Trigo, a small island in the northern coast of São Paulo State, Brazil. Among all the features of the island, there are different types of phenomena: relationships between ocean and land; domestic and foreign linkages; center places; natural and human regions; ownership and rights of use the land; degrees of human intervention; and, finally, the maritime influences in the process of human settlement.

G#, a graphical approach to functional programming

Wall, Karl January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this bachelor thesis was to present a solution for how a graphical programming language with a functional mindset can be constructed with the help of inspiration from functional programming. An artefact was created by using design science as a research methodology and has in several iterations gone through development and testing to reassure the outcome works as intended. The graphical programming language which has been developed is a language that allows the programmer to code in depth, functions are written as blocks inside blocks and the language is made compact. A code structure in a JSON-format was developed at the same time as G#, allowing it to be presented in a texted data format. The purpose of the JSON-format was to enable execution of G# and the transformation to a text-based programming language. Implications can be made from this study by learning about how a graphical programming language can be built from scratch and what difficulties needs to be tackled to get a result that works as intended. G# was developed to only support a few selected and commonly used functions in programming due to time limitations. The final version of G# in this study can do calculations, handle lists and perform less complex algorithms. Under the development of G#’s graphical functions, the free tool Draw.io was used. Unknowingly from the start, Draw’s limitations made it not perform as expected. Therefore, it is recommended to investigate which available tools are most suited for the construction of the graphical functions before development begins.
