Impacts of grazing systems on Nama Karoo phytodiversityWheeler, Alan David January 2003 (has links)
Thesis (MTech (Nature Conservation))--Cape Technikon, 2003. / The study was carried out on two adjacent farms on the plains of the Nama Karoo near
Beaufort West. The impacts of three grazing treatments (a) zero grazing (b) non-selective
grazing (c) conventional grazing, on plant diversity and certain vegetation parameters were
compared.
Unpredictable and variable rainfall and major disturbance events such as droughts drive
vegetation change in the Nama Karoo. Major recruitment events are rare and can determine
Karoo vegetation composition for many years. The diversity of plant species plays an
important role in determining vegetation composition during major recruitment events and
following drought or disturbance such as grazing.
Grazing can influence the composition, abundance and seed production of Karoo plants and
in so doing influence the future abundance of desirable and undesirable forage species.
These changes may only become evident over long periods, but small changes in vegetation
as a response to grazing treatment can accumulate considerably over time.On the farm Elandsfontein, studies have shown that non-selective grazing leads to a higher
plant turnover rate, resulting in more vigorous and productive plants, and improved
ecosystem functioning. However there is no evidence of this grazing system promoting or
reducing plant diversity. The aim of this study was to test whether the non-selective grazing
system promoted or reduced plant diversity compared to no grazing and conventional
grazing. The hypothesis was that there were no differences between the grazing treatments
in terms of plant diversity or any of the vegetation parameters measured.
To evaluate this hypothesis, plant data were collected from the three grazing treatments
using the Modified-Whittaker vegetation sampling method. The method was further
modified for this study to allow for accurate abundance measurements rather than estimates,
and an increased area for recording species richness. Using various diversity indices that incorporate species richness and the proportional
abundance of species, plant diversity values for each treatment were obtained.
No differences in terms of plant diversity were found between the treatments.
A significant difference between treatments was found in the density of plants, particularly
in perennial grasses and shrubs. Canopy cover percentage did not differ for individual
species or as total cover between the treatments.

Effects of grazing and housing management systems on greenhouse gas emissions, blood profiles and meat quality of Nguni goatsTapiwa, Chikwanda Allen January 2016 (has links)
The broad objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of grazing and housing management systems on greenhouse gas emissions, blood profiles and meat quality of Nguni goats. A total of 64 castrated Nguni goats were used and a housing structure was designed to accommodate the goats as well as evaluate effects of type of floor on greenhouse gases, meat quality, blood metabolites and fatty acid profiles. In the first experiment: Forty-eight castrated Nguni goats, at 6-7 months old were used for herding (H) or tethering (T) management systems and randomly allocated to pens with earth (E) or slatted (S) floors. Gas sampling was done using static chambers and analysed using a SRI 8610C gas chromatography machine. The highest CH4 fluxes were from the manure of herded goats on earth floors (HE). The highest CO2 fluxes were from manure of herded goats that were housed on slatted floors (HS): The highest N2O fluxes were from the manure of tethered goats that were sheltered on slatted floors (TS). It was concluded from the first experiment that goat manure is an important source of GHG that is influenced by grazing and floor type management systems. The second experiment was done to evaluate greenhouse gas (GHG) emission from disused (DP) vs occupied goat pens (OP) with earth (EF) or slatted (SF) floors. Eight previously occupied pens were used in this study. Sixteen goats were randomly put in the pens labelled occupied pens with earth floors (OPEF) and occupied pens with slatted floors (OPSF) resulting in four goats per OP. There were month by pen use; month by floor type; and use by floor type interaction effects (P < 0.05) on CH4 production. Floor type, use (DP vs OP) and month affected (P < 0.05) CH4 production. Manure on earth floors of occupied pens (OPEF) emitted the highest (P < 0.05) methane followed by earth floors of disused pens (DPEF). The least CH4 was emitted from DPSF. There was pen use (DP vs OP) by floor type interaction effect (P < 0.05) on CO2 emission. Floor type and pen use affected (P < 0.05) CO2 production. Manure in occupied pens with slatted floors (OPSF) produced the highest CO2 and the least CO2 was from disused pens with slatted floors (DPSF). Floor type and month influenced (P < 0.05) N2O production. It was concluded that continued use of goat pens increased GHG emissions. However, disused goat pens with manure remain an important source of GHG as they continued to emit quantifiable levels of CH4, CO2 and N2O. The third experiment was done to determine the effects of grazing and housing management systems on the concentrations of blood metabolites, activity of creatine kinase, body weight (BW), body condition score (BCS) and carcass characteristics using 48 castrated Nguni goats. Tethered goats had higher (P<0.05): urea, creatinine, total protein, globulin concentrations and more activity of CK than herded goats. On the other hand, herded goats had higher (P<0.05) plasma glucose (H: 3.39±0.020 vs T: 3.23±0.020 mmol/L), serum albumin (H: 15.30±0.147 vs T: 14.82±0.144 g/L) concentration. It was concluded that serum concentrations of all the metabolites and the activity of CK were sensitive to grazing system. Herding of goats promoted more glucose concentration and preservation of muscle protein and hence superior body weights and BCS than tethered goats. The fourth experiment was done to determine the effects of grazing and housing management systems on the activity of creatine kinase (CK) and cortisol concentration, and chevon quality. Further, the effect of muscle type [Muscularis longissimus thoracis et. Lumborum (LTL) and triceps brachii (TB)] on chevon quality was also investigated. Forty eight castrated Nguni goats aged 6- 7 months were randomly allocated to tethering (n=24) and herding (n=24) treatments. Floor type affected meat (P<0.05) pH24. Tethered goats had higher (P < 0.05) L* and CL percent than herded goats. Muscle type had a significant influence (P < 0.05) on a*, WBSF and pH. It was observed and concluded that T resulted in higher L* and more CL percent whilst SF lowered the pH24 of chevon; at the same time meat from the TB muscle was more tender, despite having a higher pH24 and more CL percent relative to LTH cuts. The fifth experiment was done to determine the effect of grazing and floor type on fatty acid composition of chevon from tethered and herded Nguni goats. Floor type had no effect on fatty acid composition. Oleic, stearic, palmitic and linoleic were the major fatty acids. Chevon from tethered goats had higher (P < 0.05) proportions of long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs): eicosapentaenoic, docosapentaenoic, docosahexaenoic, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and more total SFA, total PUFA, total Omega- 6 and total omega 3 fatty acids than herded goats. On the other hand, chevon from herded goats had more (P < 0.05) C18:1c9, C18:2t9, 12 (n-6), C20:3c11, 14, 17 (n-3) and total MUFA than tethered goats. However, there was no difference (P > 0.05) in the PUFA: SFA and n-6/n-3 fatty acid ratios between the herded and tethered goats. It was concluded that tethering promoted higher proportions of beneficial PUFAs which were more in TB than LTH muscle. The overall conclusions from the whole study were that goat manure is an important source of GHG with high CH4 being emitted from earth floors of herded goats. High CO2 and N2O are emitted from SF of herded and tethered goats, respectively. There were no major differences in meat quality between herded and tethered goats. However, herding promoted more live weight gain than tethering. On the other hand, tethering promoted more beneficial fatty acids. Therefore depending on the objective of the enterprise, smallholder farmers can safely tether or herd their goats. Further, there is need to develop technologies to harness CH4 from goat manure.

Rangeland degradation around water-points under different management systemsSmet, Michiel 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScConEcol )--University of Stellenbosch, 2004. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Over 70% of South Africa is too arid for crop farming and is used for commercial livestock ranching,
communal livestock ranching, or game ranching. These management systems differ from each other
in a number of aspects, e.g. herbivore species, stocking rate, grazing regime, and management
structure. The main question addressed in this study is: to what extent do the three management
systems affect rangeland condition? Following the equilibrium paradigm of vegetation dynamics,
communal livestock ranches are expected to have a greater detrimental effect on rangeland condition
than other management systems because stocking densities and, consequently, herbivore impacts,
are usually far higher than under the other two management systems. However, recent nonequilibrium
theories argue that vegetation dynamics in arid systems are mainly driven by rare and
stochastic rainfall events. Biotic factors, such as grazing and herbivore diversity, are predicted to have
little effect on rangeland condition. This leads to the prediction that herbivore impacts on arid
ecosystems are not density-dependent and, consequently, the high stocking densities commonly
recorded on communal livestock ranches will not cause more rangeland degradation than other
management systems.
Arid and semi-arid rangelands are characterised by high inherent spatial and temporal variation in
vegetation and soil parameters. Hence, differentiating between the effects of grazing management
systems and natural variability caused by abiotic factors, such as rainfall, is difficult. This problem can
be circumvented by examining gradients of grazing intensity radiating from water-points (=
piospheres). I examined changes in vegetation and soil parameters along 500 m-Iong grazing
gradients on ranches in the semi-arid Northem Cape province, South Africa, with the three abovementioned
management systems. Analysis of the vegetation on these ranches demonstrated the
existence of grazing gradients around the water-points. Two characteristic zones described in other
studies were identified, namely the sacrifice zone (almost complete denudation of the vegetation close
to the water-point) and the dense shrub zone (distal to the sacrifice zone). Communal livestock
ranching had a greater negative effect on rangeland vegetation than the two other ranching systems,
particularly with regard to annual grass species diversity, percentage of bare soil, and shrub density.
Within 100 m of the water-points, soil quality was negatively affected by commercial cattle ranching.
Contrastingly, there were no significant effects of the other two management systems on soil quality in
the piosphere. The feeding of supplemental forage and nutrients may explain the greater impact of commercial cattle farming on soil quality. The results of this study are consistent with the predictions
of the equilibrium theory of vegetation dynamics because grazing impacts were density-dependent in
these semi-arid rangelands. However, the results presented here also indicate that forage
supplementation alters the spatial and temporal distribution of livestock in a manner that may have
greater negative impacts on soil quality than density of livestock per se. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Meer as 70% van Suid-Afrika is te droog vir gewasverbouing en word gebruik vir kommersiële

in die studie is die volgende: Tot watter mate affekteer die drie verskillende boerderybestuurstipes die
toestand van weivelde? Gesien teen die agtergrond van die ekwilibriumparadigma van plantedinamika,
word verwag dat gemeenskaplike veeboerdery 'n groter impak op die toestand van weiveld

The impact of kangaroo grazing on sediment and nutrient mobilisationAlviano, Philip Unknown Date (has links) (PDF)
The adverse impacts on vegetation and soils due to livestock grazing have been extensively studied for many years. The extent to which native wildlife may also be causing change to their environment, as a result of local increases in population density, has been the subject of debate in a number of countries. In Australia there has been a growing awareness in recent years that native herbivores, particularly kangaroos and wallabies, may also be causing changes to ecosystem dynamics. Environmmental changes, produced firstly by the aboriginal people and then by Europeans, have favoured the larger macropods, resulting in increased population levels. These impacts can also be seen in areas around cities, where pressure from urbanisation has restricted populations to smaller and smaller patches of remnant vegetation and reserves, increasing the pressure on diminishing food resources within these patches. This study focuses on one of the areas that supplies drinking water to Melbourne, the Yan Yean Reservoir catchment, which is situated 37 km north east of Melbourne. This study adds to our understanding of the impacts of native wildlife populations by investigating the extent of some of these possible changes to ecosystem dynamics.

Forage selection by California bighorn sheep and the effects of grazing on an Artemisia-Agropyron community in southern British ColumbiaWikeem, Brian Michael January 1984 (has links)
This study was undertaken to determine the interrelations among forage production and utilization, forage quality, forage availability, diet selection, and the subsequent impact of grazing by captive California bighorn sheep under controlled experimental conditions on an Artemisia - Agropyron plant community in southern interior British Columbia.
Fourteen grasses, 58 forbs plus 18 trees and shrubs were available for grazing by the captive herd within a 42 ha experimental enclosure. Agropyron spicatum, Bromus tectorum and Artemisia tridentata were the dominant species on the site equaling 22.1, 9.5 and 6.7% of the cover respectively.
Both annual and seasonal variations in plant species phenology,
cover and botanical composition were evident among phenological groups, forage classes and individual species. Cover of grasses (51.4%) and forbs (24.1%) was highest in 1978 which was the wettest year, and it was lowest in 1979 which was the driest year equaling 34.2 and 12.8% for each group respectively.

of Agropyron spicatum varied little among years.
Yields for total standing crop varied from 40.83 to 62.95 g/m² in 1977 and 1978 on the ungrazed areas in response to annual weather patterns. Fall regrowth was prevalent in 1978 and 1979 equaling 8.18 and 19.42 g/m² or 11.5 and 27.0% of the total herbage produced in each year respectively. Maximum availability of nutrients occurred in March and April each year, but from September through to November fall regrowth re-established
nutrient levels to those recorded in the early growth stages for all plant species sampled.
A total of 79 species consisting of 14 grasses, 47 forbs and 18 shrubs were observed in the diet of the experimental herd from 1977 to 1979. Grasses, forbs and shrubs comprised 66.6, 18.9 and 14.5% of the diet respectively over the 28 month study period. Agropyron spicatum was generally the most common plant found in the bighorn diet in all seasons, but this plant species typically occurred more frequently on the range than in the diet. Other grasses such as Festuca scabrella, Festuca idahoensis, Koeleria cristata and Stipa comata were preferred.
Forbs were grazed most in summer (26.5 and 36.2%) and spring (19.2 and 18.4%) in 1977 and 1978 respectively. Perennial forbs were generally preferred but annual forbs were selected against by the bighorn sheep in all seasons. Browse was utilized most in winter and spring each year averaging 18.7 and 17.6% of the diet in each season respectively over the two year period. The dominant shrub, Artemisia tridentata was not preferred but most other browse species were. No consistent regressions could be established between forage consumption and corresponding nutritive quality of selected forage species.
Balsamorhiza sagittata and Agropyron spicatum were least affected from grazing despite their importance in mountain sheep diet. Indeed, only leaf lengths differed among grazed and un-grazed Balsamorhiza sagittata plants and no significant differences
were observed in basal diameters or the number of culms produced on grazed and ungrazed Agropyron spicatum plants after three years of grazing. Reductions in nearly all measured parameters
were observed on grazed Koeleria cristata, Poa sandbergii, Stipa comata, Castilleja thompsonii, Lupinus sericeus and Erio- gonum niveum plants compared to ungrazed plants.
Utilization of Amelanchier alnifolia was determined with three methods in 1977 and five methods in 1978. It was concluded that weight methods do not evaluate the impact of mountain sheep browsing any better than methods based on stem lengths.
The long term effects of grazing by California bighorn sheep was evaluated from 1976 to 1983. Total cover remained virtually the same on the grazed (71.1 and 85.0%) and ungrazed (70.3 and 86.0%) areas between these two years respectively. Annual, perennial and individual plant species all reacted differently to grazing by mountain sheep.
Cover of perennial grasses increased only slightly on both the grazed and protected areas between 1976 and 1983 but these differences were not statistically significant. No differences
in either cover or botanical composition were observed between the grazed and ungrazed areas for Agropyron spicatum, Koeleria cristata or Poa sandbergii. Cover and botanical composition of forbs remained the same in 1983 compared to 1976 on the grazed areas. On the ungrazed areas, both cover and botanical composition of forbs increased over the same time period.
Botanical composition of shrubs increased slightly on both the grazed and' ungrazed areas over the seven year period but cover for this group remained the same. Both Eriogonum niveum and Eriogonum heracleoides declined significantly on the areas grazed by bighorn sheep. Vegetation, soil and grazing relationships in the Middelburg District of the Eastern CapeHendricks, Neile Oliver 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSc)--University of Stellenbosch, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Arid and semi-arid rangelands of the Nama-Karoo Biome are believed to have changed
considerably since the arrival of domestic livestock in the veld. Severe grazing pressure
is considered to be one of the prime factors responsible for the perceived degradation of
vegetation and concurrent soil degradation. To understand the process of degradation
and to make further recommendations for future veld restoration, a large-scale project
was undertaken in the Eastern Cape. This project focused on the role that landscape
heterogeneity plays in providing refuges for plant species. The key question asked in
this project was: What role do these hypothetically less grazed mesas play in the
conservation of rangelands in the Nama-Karoo of the Eastern Cape?
This study, a component of the larger project, investigated grazing and soil landscape
gradients on- and off- the three mesas (Tafelberg, Folminkskop and Buffelskop) in the
Middelburg District of the Eastern Cape, South Africa and the possible influences that
they might have on the veld. The flats surrounding the mesas were mostly used as
grazing camps in contrast to the plateaux of the mesas, which had varied levels of
accessibility.
In the absence of direct observations, the primary objective of the study was to test the
differential dung pellet abundance and impact of animals on different parts of the
landscape. As such, dung pellet counts in this study were correlated with surrogates of
soil physical properties including bare ground, trampling and litter cover. Variation in
dung pellet density was found at the different habitats (flats, slopes and plateaux) of all
mesas. The flats to the north-eastern and south-western of Tafelberg mesa were found
to be more heavily utilized by livestock and herbivores, while the plateaux and southeastern
slopes of Folminkskop and Buffelskop were also utilized by grazers. The
Tafelberg mesa was the only study site that was consistent with the hypothesis which
stated that grazers would be less concentrated on the plateau compared to the
surrounding flats due to its inaccessibility, whilst the high mean dung pellet density on
the plateaux of the smaller Folminkskop and Buffelskop mesas due to easier access
contradicted the original hypothesis. It appeared that dung pellet density did not clearly
turn out to be an indicator of habitat use in this study, but showed where slopes and
plateaux were accessible to herbivores, as in the case for the Buffelskop mesa, a higher abundance of dung pellets were found suggesting that higher intensities of habitat use
took place.
During this study a strong pattern was observed of bare soil patches on the flats
surrounding the mesas. There was a decrease in percentage of bare soil along the
gradient of the three mesas with a high percentage of bare soil on the plateaux of the
mesas. A significant correlation was found between bare soil and dung pellet density.
However, the plateaux of Folminkskop and Buffelskop had a high percentage of bare soil
compared to the plateau of Tafelberg mesa. Farmers mainly used these smaller mesas
as grazing camps for their livestock and herbivores. A positive correlation between bare
soil and litter cover of the different habitats was evident in this study. A lower
percentage of litter cover at these sites was associated with a high percentage of bare
soil. Litter is very important in a healthy vegetation community in terms of nutrient
cycling and fertile patches.
A detailed assessment of soil chemical and physical properties would reveal, firstly, if
vegetation change is better explained by soil or grazing effects and, secondly, if changes
in soil have resulted from land use. Differences in macro- and micro-site variations
between open-canopy (between shrubs) and closed-canopy (under shrubs) sites for
each habitat were determined to differentiate between local scales due to land use and
landscape scales due to geomorphology. The results suggested that carbon,
phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, copper and manganese levels in soils at landscape
scale better explain vegetation changes between habitats. At a local scale (open- and
closed-canopy sites) land use was responsible for little changes in soils. Changes in
only soil potassium, zinc and boron elements were actually a consequence of local
scales due to land use. The soil nutrient content on the slopes appeared to be
intermediate between the flats and plateaux of all three mesas. It appeared that dolerite
capped Tafelberg and Folminkskop mesas had high silt and clay content, while
Buffelskop (sandstone) mesa had a lower silt and clay content. Consequently, the
texture and parent material of the soils contributed to the variations in soil nutrient
composition between these mesas. High infiltration rate together with low nutrient
content on the flats clearly showed that these flats, surrounding the mesas were
degraded. The high infiltration rates were caused by high activity by livestock and other
indigenous animals on the flats which breaks the surface crusting of bare soil and improve infiltration. It was concluded that high levels of grazing at these sites have also
altered the textural and soil properties.
Endozoochory dispersal and the deposition of dung pellets in areas of small patch
disturbances play an important role in veld regeneration in degraded areas. Dung
pellets collected from permanent study sites on the southeastern and northwestern flats
and slopes, and all the study sites on the plateau of Tafelberg mesa, was sown in
seedling trays, watered and monitored for seedling germination. Species list were then
compared to below-ground soil seed bank data and above-ground vegetation data
collected by other researchers at the same permanent study sites. Higher seedling
percentages were recorded from dung pellets collected on the flats than on the plateau.
A total of sixteen species were found to germinate in dung pellets collected on the flats
compared to ten species germinating in dung pellets collected on the slopes and two
species on the plateau of Tafelberg mesa. The seeds that germinated represent a
variety of palatable grasses and shrub species. Aristida sp., Eragrostis bicolor,
Eragrostis ch/orome/as and Eragrostis obtusa were palatable grasses recorded for dung
pellets collected on the flats. Of the species recorded, Aristida sp., Chenopodium sp.
and Pentzia sp. were found in dung pellets but were not recorded in parallel soil seedbank
and vegetation studies.
Successful restoration of veld conditions requires strict grazing management practices.
Germination of seed in dung pellets might be considered to be a valuable means of
indicating restoration potential and rangeland conditions for the identification of both
degraded and conservation worthy areas. With appropriate land management skills and
restoration measures, these challenges can be constructively and creatively faced. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Daar word geglo dat die ariede en sernl-arlede weivelde van die Nama-Karoo bioom
aansienlik verander het sedert die aankoms van mak lewende hawe in die veld. Swaar
weidingsdruk word beskou as een van die vernaamste faktore verantwoordelik vir die
waarneembare oorbeweiding van plantegroei en die gelyktydige grond agteruitgang
(degradasie). Ten einde die proses van degradasie beter te verstaan, en om verdere
aanbevelings te kan maak vir toekomstige veld herstel, is huidiglik 'n grootskaalse projek
in die Oos-Kaap aan die gang oor die rol wat landskap ongelyksoortigheid speel in die
voorsiening van skuiling aan plant spesies.
Hierdie studie ondersoek weiding en grondlandskap gradiënte (op en af) van die drie
mesas (Tafelberg, Folminkskop en Buffelskop) in die Middelburg streek van die Oos-
Kaap, Suid-Afrika en die moontlike invloed wat hierdie gradiënte op die veld het. Die
vlaktes was meestal gebruik vir weidingskampe in teenstelling met die kruin van die
mesas. Hierdie studie het duidelike patrone vir habitat-gebruik op die vlaktes, hange en
kruine van al die mesas aangetoon. Die vraag wat gestel was, was watter rol speel
hierdie hipoteties minder beweide mesas in die bewaring van weivelde in die Nama-
Karoo van die Oos-Kaap?
Hierdie studie toets nie direk vir mis verspreiding as 'n plaasvervanger vir dier
verspreiding in die landskap sedert werklike dier getalle nie oorweeg was nie. In die
awesigheid van direkte waarneming, die primêre doelwit was om te toets die
differensiaal misdigtheid en die impak van diere op verskillende dele van die landskap.
Mis getalle in hierdie studie was gekorreleer met plaasvervangers van fisiese
eienskappe insluitent onbedekte grond, vertrapping en droë plant material decking.
Variasie in misdigtheid was gevind by die verskillende habitate (vlaktes, hange en
kruine) van all die mesas. Die vlaktes aan die noord-oostelike en suid-westelike kante
van die Tafelberg mesa was meer hewig benut deur lewende hawe en hêrbivore, terwyl
die kruine en suid-oostelike hange van Folminkskop en Buffelskop ook gebruik was deur
weidende diere. Die Tafelberg mesa was die enigste studie area wat konsekwent was
met die hipotese, terwyl die hoë gemiddeld misdigtheid op die kruine van die kleiner
Folminkskop en Buffelskop mesas, as gevolg van makliker toegang weerspreek die
oorspronklike hipotese. Dit blyk dat misdigtheid duidelik opkom as 'n nie aanwyser
habitat-gebruik in hierdie studie, maar wys well waar hange en kruine toeganklik was vir herbivore, soos in die geval van Buffelskop mesa, oorvloed van mis was gevind wat
voorstel dat hoer intensiteit van habitat-gebruik voorgekom het.
'n Duidelike patroon is waargeneem tydens hierdie studie van onbedekte grond areas
op die vlaktes rondom mesas. Daar was 'n afname in persentasie onbedekte grond
langs die gradiënt van die drie mesas. Die kruine van Folminkskop en Buffelskop toon
hoër persentasies onbedekte grond in vergelyking met die kruin van die Tafelberg mesa.
Daar is 'n betekenisvolle korrelasie tussen onbedekte grond en misdigtheid gevind.
Boere gebruik hierdie kleiner mesas hoofsaaklik as weidingskampe vir hulle lewende
hawe en hêrbivore. In hierdie studie is daar 'n positiewe korrelasie gevind tussen
onbedekte grond en droë plant material decking van die verskillende habitatte. Droë
plantmateriaal bedekking speel 'n baie belangrik rol in 'n gesonde plant gemeenskap in
terme van voedingsirkulering en vrugbare kolle.
'n Breedvoerige skatting van grond chemise en fisiese eienskappe wou openbaar
eerstens of plantegroei verandering beter verklaar word deur grond of weiding effekte en
tweedens, of verandering in grond veroorsaak was deur land-gebruik. Verskille in
makro- en mikroterrein-wisseling tussen oop-blaredak (tussenplantruimtes) en toeblaredak
(onderplantdekking) terreine vir elke habitat was bepaal om te onderskei
tussen lokaal effek as gevolg van land-gebruik en landskap effek as gevolg van
geomorfologie. Die resultate stel voor dat koolstof, fosfor, kalsium, magnesium, koper
en mangaan vlakke in die grond by landskap effek beter plantegroei verandering tussen
habitate verduidelik. By 'n lokaal effek (oop-en toe-blaredak terreine) land-gebruik was
verantwoordelik vir min veranderinge in grond. Verandering in grond kalium, sink en
baron elemente was werklik 'n gevolg van lokaal effek as gevolg van land-gebruik. Die
nutrient inhoud van grond op die hange blyk intermediêr te wees tussen die van die
vlaktes en kruine van al drie mesas. Hierdie studie toon ook dat die geologie en
topografie van hierdie mesas die grond tekstuur en nutrient samestelling op en af van
die mesas beinvloed. Dit wil voorkom asof die dolerite bedekte Tafelberg en
Folminkskop mesas, hoë slik en klei materiaal bevat, terwyl Buffelskop (sandsteen)
mesa 'n laer slik en klei inhoud het. Gevolglik, tekstueel en ouer materiaal grond dra by
tot die variasie in grond nutrient samestelling tussen hierdie mesas. Hoë infiltrasie
tempo tesame met lae voedingstof van die vlaktes dui daarop dat die vlaktes rondom die
mesas oorbewei was. Hierdie hoë infiltrasie tempo word veroorsaak deur hoë dierlike aktiwieteite op die vlaktes deur lewende hawe en ander inheemse diere wat die
oppervlakke van onbedekte grond versteur en infiltrasie verbeter. Die gevolgtrekking
word gemaak dat die hoë weidingsvlakke van hierdie terreine ook die tekstuur en ander
grond eienskappe verander het.
Endozoochoreeuse verspreiding en die mis-afsetting in gebiede van klein areaversteurings,
speel 'n belangrike rol in veld herlewing in oorbeweide gebiede. Mis
versamel by permanente studie terreine op die SO en NW vlaktes en hange, as ook al
die studie terreine op die kruin van die Tafelberg mesa, is gesaai in saailing bakke,
besproei en gekontroleer vir saailing ontkieming. 'n Lys van spesies is vergelyk met
onder-grondse saadbank gegewens en bo-grondse plantegroei gegewens wat deur
ander navorsers by dieselfde studie terreine versamel was. Hoër saailing persentasies
is gevind vir mis wat op die vlaktes versamel is as op die kruine. 'n Totaal van sestien
geidentifiseerde spesies het uit die mis op die vlaktes ontkiem in vergelyking met die tien
spesies wat ontkiem het uit die mis van die hange en twee spesies iut die mis van die
kruin van Tafelberg mesa. Die ontkiemde saad verteenwoordig 'n verskeidenheid van
vreetbare gras en struik spesies. Aristide sp., Eragrostis bicolor, Eragrostis chloromelas
en Eragrostis obtusa is vreetbare grasse wat gevind was in die mis versamelop die
vlaktes. Die spesies opname wys dat Aristida sp., Chenopodium sp. en Pentzia sp.
Gevind was in die mis, maar nie in die parallelle grond saadbank en plantegroei studies
nie.
Die suksesvolle herstel van veldtoestande vereis "n streng weidingsbestuur toepassing.
Die ontkieming van saad in mis kan beskou word as "n bekostigbare manier om veld
herstel potentiaal te bepaal, asook weiveld toestande vir die indentifiseering van beide
degradasie en bewaring van waardevolle areas. Met gepaste veldbestuur vaardighede
en herstel maatreels, kan hierdie uitdagings konstruktief en kreatief aangespreek word.

Assessment of veld utilisation practices and veld condition in the Little KarooCupido, Clement F. 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScConsEcol (Conservation Ecology and Entomology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2005. / The veld condition in the Little Karoo is in various states of degradation and grazing
by domestic livestock is considered as the major anthropogenic force that changed
the landscape. This region with its extremely rich plant species diversity and
endemics, has supported small livestock for at least 2 000 years, and since
colonization (250 years ago) been intensively used for the production of a variety of
livestock. Ostrich production developed as the major source of income for this
region.
The first part of this study investigates the current veld management practices
employed by livestock farmers in the Little Karoo region. Recommended veld
management practices considered in this study are grazing rotation, moderate stocking
rate control, moderate veld utilisation, separation of ecotopes, veld rehabilitation,
controlling declared weeds and alien vegetation and regular assessment of veld
condition. One hundred randomly selected farmers were personally interviewed by
means of a structured questionnaire. Questions were grouped into the following
categories: (a) demography of farmers, (b) ostrich farming, (c) perceptions and
knowledge of farmers on farming practices, (d) grazing rotation, (e) stocking rate, (f)
veld utilisation and veld assessment, (g) separation of ecotopes, (h) veld
rehabilitation, (i) control of alien vegetation and (j) farmers’ knowledge on legislation.
This was used to obtain information on the Little Karoo farming community, sizes of
farms and camps, types of farming enterprises and on adoption of recommended veld
management practices in the region. The main findings from this section are that
relatively small farming units with few camps, poor separation of ecotopes and a low
estimated grazing capacity, limit extensive livestock farming within the region.
Perceptions of farmers on veld condition, grazing rotation, stocking rate, separation of
ecotopes are fairly optimistic. As a result grazing capacities are overestimated and
overstocking occurs within this region. The current stocking rate in ostrich camps
(67.7% overstocked) and mammalian livestock camps (55.1% overstocked) is
evidence that farmers overstock to compensate for these limiting factors in order to
make a living from the land. The majority of farmers are well aware of the Articles in
the Conservation of Agricultural Resources Act of 1983, which are applicable to veld management. Only more that 50% comply with this legislation by rehabilitating veld
and 80% of them control invasive alien species on their farm.
In the second part, veld assessments were done in randomly selected veld camps,
using the multi-criterion, semi-subjective Quick Rangeland Health Assessment
(QRHA) Method. Veld condition was significantly poorer closer to water or feeding
points due to the piosphere effect caused by livestock. Veld condition in the Little
Karoo can be related to altitude, vegetation types and land use. Therefore, the lowlying
Little Succulent Karoo vegetation type is in a poorer condition compared to
Spekboom Succulent Thicket and South and South-west Coast Renosterveld. Ostrich
production on plains in the Little Succulent Karoo vegetation type is the main cause
for the degradation of this vegetation type. It would seem as if historically high
stocking rates cannot be ignored in explaining the current veld condition. A positive
correlation between veld condition and the diversity of plant species (species density)
were found, which highlights the importance of good veld management practices in
sustainable agriculture.
The third part tested whether all indicators in the QRHA method are equally sensitive
and whether there is a positive correlation between the QRHA method and the
Grazing Index Method. A significant positive linear correlation was found between
the two methods. Cover was the least sensitive indicator of rangeland condition, and
livestock induced disturbances (which include the indicators grazing intensity,
disturbance indicators, soil health and species richness) were the most sensitive for
Karoo veld assessment. A major benefit of the QRHA method is heuristic; therefore
this method may have value in agricultural extension work.

Models of Bontebok (Damaliscus pygargus pygargus, Pallas 1766) habitat preferences in the Bontebok National Park and sustainable stocking ratesLuyt, Eustatius du Chavoux 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSc)--University of Stellenbosch, 2005. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT:This study concentrates on the Bontebok (Damaliscus pygargus pygargus Pallas 1766) population
of the Bontebok National Park. Using a combination of literature research, field observations,
satellite imagery, Geographic Information System mapping and dung analysis, their habitat
preferences within the Park are ascertained and compared to different behavioural and
environmental factors. Considering vegetation composition and height, grass cover, burning history,
general topography, water availability, actual diet quality (from faecal analysis) and population
distribution, the best predictor of spatial pattern are investigated with GIS Dempster-Shafer models.
The historical density distribution of the animals in the Park can be used to predict sustainable
stocking rates. As far as possible, the results for the Bontebok are compared to those of the other
larger herbivores in Bontebok National Park i.e. Red Hartebeest, Cape Mountain Zebra and Grey
Rhebuck. These results should be useful for Wildlife Managers to know how to manage veld for
Bontebok and at what stocking rates this can be done sustainably. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie fokus op die Bontebok (Damaliscus pygargus pygargus, Pallas 1766) bevolking van
die Bontebok Nasionale Park. Deur ‘n kombinasie van literatuurstudie, veldobservasies,
satlietbeelde, Geografiese Inligtingstelsel (GIS) kartering en mis-analise te gebruik, word Bontebok
habitatvoorkeure in die Park vasgestel en met verskillende gedrags- en omgewingsfaktore vergelyk.
Deur te kyk na plantegroei-samestelling en hoogte, grasbedekking, brandgeskiedenis, algemene
topografie, water-beskikbaarheid, diëet kwaliteit en die Bontebokke se waargenome ruimtelike
verspreiding, word die faktor wat die verspreidingspatroon die beste voorspel, m.b.v. GIS
Dempster-Shafer modelle ondersoek. Die historiese digtheidsverspreiding van diere in die Park
word gebruik om volhoubare veldladings te voorspel. Sover moontlik word die resultate vir
Bontebok vergelyk.met die ander groter herbivore in die Bontebok Nasionale Park, te wete Rooi
Hartebees, Kaapse Bergsebra en Vaalribbok. Hierdie resultate behoort vir Natuurlewe-bestuurders
tot nut te wees as riglyne vir veldbestuur en volhoubare veldladings van Bontebok.

This thesis examines the effects on vegetation at selected sites in northern South Australia of excluding various herbivores over a four and a half year period and of two intense but controlled grazing pulses over a six month period followed by an 18 month recovery period in a dune-swale land system. These changes are compared with changes recorded over an 11-year period at the Olympic Dam mine site. It found that short-term changes in vegetation revealed by ordination of periodical cover, density and species richness, are attributable to the periodicity of rainfall and that, under present grazing regimes, rainfall effects override grazing effects. Differences between the effects of sheep and cattle hoof damage are worthy of further investigation, as is the impact of kangaroo grazing. These two factors may have important implications for the management of Australian rangelands.
