Zinc-lead mineralization at Pering Mine in the Griqualand West sub-basin : an isotopic study.

Detailed studies, both chemical and physical, have been performed on various dolomites and vug-filling carbonates, to determine the pathways and extent of the mineralizing fluids associated with the Pering Zn-Pb deposit within the Griqualand West sub-basin. Three carbonate phases were identified within the vugs using cathodoluminescence microscopy. The first phase formed a reaction rim on the host dolomites during the deposition of sphalerite and oscillatory zoned carbonate. Finally calcite was deposited, which is associated with post-mineralizing fluids. The vug-filling carbonates have very radiogenic 87Sr/86Sr values (0.72-0.76) compared with the host dolomites (0.70-0.73). The gangue carbonate minerals deposited within the vugs have similar radiogenic 87Sr/86Sr values to the gangue minerals of the main Pering orebody, indicating that the vugs formed part of the aquifer system through which the mineralizing fluids migrated. Radiogenic 87Sr was not acquired from the surrounding host dolomite. The mineralizing fluids may have picked up radiogenic 87Sr when migrating through porous rocks such as the Makwassie Quartz Porphyry of the Ventersdorp Supergroup or felsic rocks forming the Kaapvaal Craton. In addition, radiogenic Sr may have been acquired from dewatering of the Lokammona shales within the area, or expelled from amphibolite and granulite rocks involved in the Kheis or Namaqua Tectonic events. Two models are proposed to explain the genesis of the main Pering deposit and the occurrence of sphalerite in the vug-filling carbonates surrounding the deposit: 1) Mixing Model; and 2) Single Fluid Model. The Single Fluid Model is preferred which involves a single fluid migration and interaction with the carbonate host rock and/or pore fluid. The metals were probably transported as chloride complexes together with reduced sulphur at temperatures greater than 2000 C. Deposition of the ore minerals resulted from either a dilution of the fluid, a pH increase or a temperature decrease. Both dolomites and vug-filling carbonates have a model Pb age between 2.0 and 2.7. Secondary 1Ga model ages indicate a minor Namaqua tectonic influence. Carbon and oxygen isotopes indicate that the fluids originated in a deep burial environment. Future exploration work using cathodoluminescence microscopy and staining techniques will be both useful and cost-effective. Isotopic work should concentrate on the Rb-Sr system as radiogenic 87Sr/86Sr values are the best indicators of the path of the mineralizing fluid, and the proximity to ore concentrations. / Thesis (M.Sc.)-University of Natal, 1992.

The Albania settlement of Griqualand West, 1866-1878

The history of the Albania Settlement of Griqualand West is examined from its beginnings in 1866 to its demise in 1878. Albania was very much a product of its time. Nineteenth century British colonial policy was basically expansionist, despite minor fluctuations caused by the various influences affecting it, such as the Free Trade and Mercantilist doctrines, social factors within Britain and events within the colonies themselves. From 1815 colonial settlements were fairly common in British territory, especially after Wakefield had provided a convincing theoretical framework for them. Within South Africa itself there are differing interpretations of what motivated British policy and of the role of the missionaries, while the changing political and economic landscape markedly affected Britain's decisions. British Government settlement schemes were undertaken mainly for social or military reasons, but there were also many settlements founded by land speculators. The economically depressed 1860s hit the Eastern Cape hard and this, combined with the transition to sheep farming, which created considerable land hunger, made the Albania scheme attractive to Eastern Cape farmers. The Griqua people led by Andries Waterboer had made a great effort to establish hegemony north of the Orange River, over the Sotho-Tswana and other Griqua chiefs. By 1866 the attempt had failed and Free State farmers were encroaching onto Nicholas Waterboer's lands. When Waterboer's agent, David Arnot, proposed the establishment of a settlement of Albany men to act as a "Wall of Flesh", Waterboer accepted the idea. Arnot's motivation was also land speculation in an area where diamonds were likely to push up land values. From its inception the settlement was dogged by quarrels, mainly over land, amongst the parties involved - the Griqua, brutally removed to make way for the settlers; the settlers, dissatisfied with the land tenure system and their administration; Arnot; the British and the encroaching Boer farmers . After the 1871 annexation of Griqualand West, into which Albania was absorbed, it took seven years, two Land Commissions, a Land Court and a special Land Claims Commissioner to sort out the tangled claims and bring order to the area and Albania's history to a close.

Petrography and geochemistry of iron formations of the Paleoproterozoic Koegas Subgroup, Transvaal Supergroup, Griqualand West, South Africa

The Early Paleoproterozoic Koegas Subgroup comprises a succession of siltstone, mudstone, iron-­‐formation, chert and carbonate rocks that overlies the iron-­‐formations of the Asbestos Hills Subgroup with sharp contact. It is overlain with erosional unconformable contact by glaciogenic diamictites of the Makaganyene Formation. This study focused on the lithostratigraphy, mineralogy and geochemistry of the iron-­‐ formations of the Koegas Subgroup based on fresh diamond drill core samples obtained during the Agouron scientific drilling project in South Africa in 2004. The iron formations the Koegas Subgroup are represented by a few important lithotypes, occurring in distinct sedimentary facies, which formed in unique depositional and diagenetic environments. The iron formations consist essentially of four facies, namely silicate lutite, mixed silicate-­‐siderite lutite, siderite lutite and siderite peloidstone A repetitive sedimentary cycle consisting of fine-­‐grained chemical lithotypes grading upward into reworked chemical lithotypes is evident throughout the Koegas Subgroup iron formations. Silicate lutite formed in deep water settings well below the wave base along a chemocline. Siderite lutite formed in shallower parts of the basin through transformation of primary ferric iron precipitate by iron respiration in presence of organic carbon. Peloidstone formed above normal wave base in shallow water by reworking of earlier siderite lutite deposits. The REE geochemistry provides important clues as to the depositional environment of the iron formation as follows. Depletion in LREE and enrichment in HREE combined with positive Y are typical of ocean water indicate that the iron formations were deposited in a marine environment. Positive Eu anomaly suggest the presence of a hydrothermal component in the ocean water from which the iron formations were deposited. Negative Ce anomalies indicate that somewhere in the marine system Ce3+ was oxidized to Ce4+ oxide, probably in the presence of free oxygen in the ocean water column (Bau and Dulski, 1996). The negative Ce anomalies seen in the Koegas iron formations are the oldest currently known from iron formations. As such the Ce anomalies most probably signify an increase in the oxygenation state of the ocean immediately prior to the rise of atmospheric oxygen as defined by Guo et al. (2009).

The Stockenström judgment, the Warren report and the Griqualand West rebellion, 1876-8

From Preface: South African frontiers periodically provided the backdrop for conflict between Blacks and Whites over land, and, in this respect, Griqualand West proved no exception. The arrival of the trekboers in the 1830s heralded the beginning of the land problem in Griqualand West, and the situation worsened with the discovery of diamonds and the subsequent influx of land-hungry Whites. By the 1870s the stage was then set for a major clash between Blacks and Whites with land as the central focus. The Griqualand West Administration tried to rectify this situation in 1875 by setting up a Land Court under Judge Andries Stockenström. Stockenström's judgment was highly controversial, as many Griqua and Blacks lost land, although no land which had been claimed by a Griqua or Black was granted to a White. As Stockenström had not resolved the land problem, the Griqualand West authorities brought in Captain Charles Warren to settle the matter of land ownership in the Province. The Warren Report was considered by all concerned to be fair, but it did not prevent the outbreak of hostilities in 1878. The two main foci of this study are, then, land ownership and the Rebellion and the link, if any, between them. The main sources for the work have been the Griqualand West archive in the Cape Archives, for the period 1872-1880, and various newspapers. The Cape and Imperial Blue Books were useful sources, especially on the military history of the rebellion. Interviews conducted in Bophuthatswana and Griqualand West clarified many obscure points and raised others, most of which have been answered in this work. This thesis is a study of British colonial policy in southern Afiica in the 1 gill centwy. More specifically it looks at how British imperial policy, in the period 1875 to 1881, played itself out in two British colonies in southern Africa, Wlder the direction of a British imperial agent, William Owen Lanyon. It sets Lanyon in the context of the frontiers and attempts to link the histories of the people who lived there, the Africans, Boers and British settlers on the one han~ and the histories of colonial policy on the other. In doing so it also unravels the relationship between Lanyon and his superiors in London and those in southern Africa. In 1875 Owen Lanyon arrived in Griqualand West, where his brief was to help promote a confederation policy in southern Africa. Because of the discovery of diamonds some years earlier, Lanyon's administration had to take account of the rising mining industry and the aggressive new capitalist economy. He also had to deal with Griqua and Tlhaping resistance to colonialism. Lanyon was transferred to the Transvaal in 1879, where he was confronted by another community that was dissatisfied with British rule: the Transvaal Boers. Indeed, in Pretoria he was faced with an extremely difficult situation, which he handled very poorly. Boer resistance to imperial rule eventually came to a head when war broke out and Lanyon and his officials were among those besieged in Pretoria. In February 1881 imperial troops suffered defeat at the hands of Boer commandos at Majuba and Lanyon was recalled to Britain. In both colonies Lanyon was caught up in the struggle between the imperial power and the local people and, seen in a larger context, in the conflict for white control over the land and labour of Africans and that between the old pre-mineral South Africa and the new capitalist order.
