The Effects of Varied Opportunities to Respond Embedded in a Group Contingency Program

This study investigated the effects of using a group contingency program with three students with disabilities in a small group special education setting. These students exhibited both academic and behavioral difficulties. With the use of Class Wide Function-Related Intervention Team (CW-FIT) students increased their active engagement and correct responses, as well as decreased their disruptive behaviors; however, these behaviors did not maintain over time. CW-FIT with high opportunities to respond showed an even greater improvement than CW-FIT with low opportunities to respond. Increased opportunities to respond resulted in higher levels of active engagement and correct responses and decreases in disruptive behavior for all three students. These results indicate that CW-FIT in combination with high opportunities to respond can help manage students' behavior and help them increase correct responding.

Group Matching and Group Contingencies

Matching relations identified by Herrnstein (1961) demonstrate behavior rates as a function of the ratio of reinforcement rates for alternative behaviors. The mathematical relationship identified by Herrnstein and modified by Baum (1974) was later applied to foraging animals, given the option of two patches (Kennedy & Gray, 1993). This application lead to the demonstration that animals (Baum & Kraft, 1998) and humans (Kraft & Baum, 2001) will engage in emergent group behavior that is distinct from individual matching relations. To more completely understand group matching in humans, group relations beyond foraging must be investigated. This study expands on the findings of Kraft and Baum (2001) and subsequent studies by introducing a group contingency for point earnings. Using an ABAB/BABA experimental design, interdependent group contingency was compared to individual contingency in two experimental sessions with different sets of participants. To better understand individual performance in matching rations, a temporal discounting measure was administered to participants (Beck & Triplett, 2009). Scores were transformed into area-under-the-curve values and correlated with total points earned. Participants were divided into teams based on their scores on a measure of temporal discounting with which they earned points during the group contingency conditions. An effect for group contingency was found for Experiment 2 but not Experiment 1. Order effects apparent in the data from both experiments are attributed to the BABA design used in Experiment 2. Results across the two experiments show a relationship between temporal discounting scores and total points earned for participants with valid temporal discounting scores (n = 13). Future research should expand upon these findings in applied contexts. / Educational Psychology

The Effects of Classwide Function-Related Intervention Teams on Preschool Behavior

Challenging behavior in preschool is a serious concern for teachers. In recent years, positive behavior support (PBS) has been shown to be effective in reducing such behaviors. Class-Wide Function-related Intervention Teams (CW-FIT) is a specific program for implementing PBS principles in classroom settings. CW-FIT is a group contingency that utilizes social skills training, teacher praise, and positive reinforcement to improve student behavior. Students are taught specific social skills and then work in teams to earn a group reward based on the use of these skills. CW-FIT has been shown to be effective in elementary classrooms but has not yet been evaluated with other age groups. The present study examined the effects of CW-FIT implementation on teacher praise rates and student engagement in four preschool classrooms with 55 total students. A single-subject, multiple-baseline design with embedded reversals was used to evaluate impact. Results indicate that CW-FIT increased teacher praise rates and student engagement while reducing student disruptive behavior. Both teachers and students found CW-FIT to be socially valid. The present study indicates promising results for the implementation of CW-FIT in a preschool setting.

The Effects of Class-Wide Function-Related Intervention Teams in Three Art Classrooms

Challenging and disruptive student behavior is a major concern for all teachers, including those who teach art. Unfortunately, there is a lack of research and resources available for art teachers to manage student behavior. School-wide positive behavior support (SWPBS) is a framework that has been shown to improve student behavior. Class-wide Function-Related Intervention Teams (CW-FIT) is an intervention that utilizes SWPBS principles including group contingency, social skills instruction, teacher praise, and positive reinforcement and has been shown to be effective in general education classrooms. This is the first study of CW-FIT in elementary art classrooms and examined the effects of the intervention on teacher praise-to-reprimand rates and student on-task behavior in three classrooms. The first classroom utilized an AB design while the other two used a reversal (ABAB) design to evaluate impact. The results indicated the teacher was able to implement CW-FIT with fidelity, increase praise-to-reprimand ratios, and increase group on-task behavior. Finally, both the teacher and students found it to be socially valid. Limitations and implications of this study for researchers and practitioners are discussed.

Teacher Preference for Response Cost and Differential Reinforcement of Alternative Behavior within Token Economies

Previous research on implementer preference for behavioral interventions is limited. This study empirically evaluated teachers’ preference for implementing two types of token economies in a classroom to increase on-task behavior of students. The two types of token economies were response cost and differential reinforcement of alternative behavior implemented using an interdependent group contingency. The results showed both teachers preferred response cost over differential reinforcement of alternative behavior.

Relative Effects of Delayed Versus Immediate Reinforcement Within an Interdependent Group-Oriented Contingency System

The current study sought to add to the literature on applying interdependent group-oriented contingency systems with randomized components to academic performance. This study expanded previous work, which has only examined effects on elementary classrooms and students with disabilities, by implementing a similar intervention within a general education, secondary classroom. Given the restricted time that teachers have to learn and implement interventions, while simultaneously carrying out all their additional responsibilities in the classroom, it is necessary for school psychologists to consider these limitations when recommending interventions. In previous work involving interdependent group-oriented contingencies, the delivery of reinforcement has been relatively immediate. While this is an ideal arrangement, it may be infeasible for middle and high school teachers to ensure reinforcement of academic performance occurs immediately within the class period. This study examined whether the delivery of reinforcement can be delayed within an interdependent group-oriented contingency system and still improve the academic performance of students in the classroom, which will allow the teacher more time for evaluating the quality of student work and, in turn, impact the acceptability of the intervention. One middle school, general education classroom served as the setting for this study. Academic performance data, including in-class work completion and accuracy rates, were collected class-wide and data on social behavior variables were gathered for 3 students exhibiting moderate to high levels of off-task behavior, based on teacher perception. An alternating treatments design was employed with two intervention conditions: one condition included immediate reinforcement and the other involved delivering reinforcement to students a day later. The interdependent group-oriented contingency intervention implemented included procedures for randomly selecting target behaviors, criteria, and reinforcers.

A Comparison of Teacher and Student Choices on Reinforcement Criteria in Using the Caught Being Good Game (CBGG) to Improve Classroom Behavior

The Caught Being Good Game (CBGG), a variation of Good Behavior Game, is an interdependent group contingency, which focuses on giving students points for engaging in appropriate, rule-following behavior. The present study aimed to expand the literature on CBGG by targeting students in general education classrooms and comparing the impact of student-chosen versus teacher-chosen contingency criteria on disruptive behavior and academic engagement. Four students who were at-risk for developing emotional disorders in two general elementary classrooms were targeted in the study. A multiple-baseline across participants design with an embedded alternating treatments design was used to evaluate the outcomes of the CBGG. Results indicated that the CBGG intervention resulted in decreasing disruptive behavior and increasing academic engagement for all four students although data demonstrated limited experimental control. Moderate differences in improvement in classroom behavior were observed when comparing teacher-chosen and student-chosen contingency criteria; however, the teacher-chosen criteria condition led to overall lower levels of disruptive behavior and higher levels of academic engagement. Social validity assessments indicated that both the teachers and the students found the intervention to be acceptable.

The Impact of a Teacher-Preferred Group Contingency with Data-Based Decision Making on Class-wide Behavior

The purpose of this study was to further examine the impact of a teacher-preferred group contingency on class-wide behavior in three general elementary education classrooms when it is used with data-based decision making by classroom teachers. A multiple baseline design across classrooms was used to examine the changes in class-wide disruptive behavior, academic engagement, and academic performance in targeted academic time periods. Data indicated that implementation of the group contingency preferred by the teachers in conjunction with data-based decision making resulted in decreases in disruptive behavior and increases in academic engagement and academic performance across classrooms. In addition, improvement in class-wide behavior was maintained at 1-week follow-up.

An Examination of the Caught being Good Game in a High School Special Education Setting

The purpose of the current study is to examine the effects of the Caught Being Good Game (CBGG) on students’ classroom behaviors. The CBGG is a positive variation of the Good Behavior Game, which has been identified as an evidenced-based intervention designed for managing classroom behavior across students, behaviors, and settings. In the current study, the effectiveness of the CBGG intervention was examined within 2 high school special education classrooms located at two school districts in rural southeastern United States. Using a multiple baseline design, the data were analyzed using visual inspection and calculation of non-overlapping data. Results revealed that the percentage of intervals in which on-task behavior occurred increased during the implementation of the CBGG game, while the students’ level of off-task behavior decreased. Acceptability of the intervention of both teachers was favorable. Given the results, the implications of this classroom management tool are positive. Future directions are discussed and the literature base regarding the CBGG was expanded.
