A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Arts in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Masters in Communication Science in the Department of Communication Science at the University of Zululand, South Africa, 2015 / Amidst growing concerns about the impact of Human Immuno Deficiency Virus and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (HIV & AIDS) on the political, social and economic spheres of our country, comes the responsibility of government to address this pertinent issue, especially through communication within the uThungulu District Municipality Structures. This research emerges within the context of rising levels of human immuno deficiency virus (HIV) infection amongst young adults, and the escalation of deaths from the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome AIDS. This study critically examines the commonly used theories and models used during HIV & AIDS preventative care communication strategies. Failure to acknowledge the communication context in campaigns theory has various negative implications. One implication is that the messages are sender-oriented, however there has been sufficient campaigns for grassroots dialogue but the recipients are unable to identify with the message as they are divorced from the context of its production. Furthermore, because of a lack of engagement by the recipient in the development of messages, retention of knowledge is minimal, and this leads to a lack of acceptance of the message. Clearly, then, there exists a need for the communication strategies, theories and models to be rearticulated so that they are more relevant and may be adapted for application within various cultural contexts. This study examines the role of communication campaign theory and audience participation as central components during planning, implementation and evaluation phases of HIV & AIDS prevention.

The mathematical modelling of the transmission dynamics of HIV/AIDS and the impact of antiviral therapies

This thesis is concerned with the structure, analysis and numerical solution of the mathematical models used to estimate the transmission dynamics of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)) the causative agent of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Investigations show that the devised deterministic mathematical models in term of system of first-order non-linear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) follow the stochastic nature of the problem at any time. In this thesis a generic form of the deterministic mathematical models is introduced which mirrors the transmission dynamics of HIV/AIDS in populations with different states of affairs, which leads to the division of large-scale and complex mathematical models. When analysing and;or solving a large-scale system of ODEs numerically, the key element in speeding up the process is selecting the maximum possible time step. This work introduces some new techniques used to estimate the maximum possible time step, avoiding the appearance of chaos and divergence in the solution when they are not features of the system. The solution to these mathematical models are presented graphically and numerically, aiming to identify the effect of the anti-HIV therapies and sex education in controlling the disease. The numerical results presented in this thesis indicate that lowering the average number of sexual partners per year is more effective in controlling the disease than the current anti-HIV treatments. For the purpose of this study the mathematical software 'Mathematica 3.0' was used to solve the system of differential equations, modelling HIV/AIDS propagation. This package also provided the graphical detail incorporated in the thesis.

Social Determinants of Health and Knowledge about HIV/AIDS Transmission Among Nigerian Adolescents

HIV is a virus that leads to AIDS. Millions of people are living with HIV. Globally, there is an increased incidence of this disease among adolescents. In literature, there is a gap regarding how social determinants of health have jointly or singly contributed to HIV/AIDS transmission. With the application of the AIDS risk reduction model (ARRM) to the secondary analysis of survey data, the purpose of this study was to determine whether any significant relationships existed between adolescents' childhood health care factors, demographic factors, social-level factors, structural-level factors, aspects of disease management factors, and knowledge about HIV transmission/AIDS among Nigerian adolescents. Survey data were used from Measure Demographic and Health Survey (MDHS) in Nigeria for 2008. Multiple linear regression revealed that childhood vaccinations were a weak predictor for HIV transmission risk (R2 - 0.020). Gender, age, place of residence, education, religion and culture, some disease management aspects (e.g., accessibility and affordability of care), and wealth index were all significant but weak predictors of knowledge of HIV/AIDS (R2 = 0.016, R2 = 0.019, R2 = 0.003 & R2 0.015). The potential positive social change effect of the study would be HIV transmission reduction through increasing knowledge of HIV/AIDS among adolescents in Nigeria. The results could be used by both governmental and nongovernmental organizations to influence childhood healthcare improvements and advance education to help reduce or eradicate the causes of HIV/ AIDS transmission among adolescents in Nigeria.

The lived experiences of HIV/AIDS related stigma reduction programmes on young females in rural Hlabisa District

The phenomenon of stigmatisation in the transmission of HIV/AIDS was highlighted in this study, and considered from a social constructionist perspective. The lived experiences of 20 participants were explored in the context of a stigma reduction programme. Perceived meanings attached to stigma, and its influence on participant behaviour was revealed through narratives. The influence of the programme on participant meaning making and perceptions was also revealed, and found that the meaning of stigma remained unchanged, and therefore stigma was not reduced. Not discounting the therapeutic platform of the programme in enabling co-construction of new perspectives which enabled coping mechanisms for participants in dealing with their circumstances. It is recommended that studies such as this be used to assist future stigma reduction programmes to identify their roles in meaning making regarding stigma, with the premise in mind that if meaning shifts, experiences will shift. / Psychology / M.A (Psychology)
