Previous issue date: 2012 / The works in healthcare has ethical and social values of extreme magnitude, alleviation of suffering and restore health; professionals to the meaning of work are to promote the strengthening of identity. It is believed that promotes and maintains an adequate quality of life in the work of health professional’s benefit the institution in that, satisfied individuals improve their productivity, reversing hence in improving assistance and the work environment. This study investigates the relationship between quality of work life and burnout in health professionals in a teaching hospital. The emotional exhaustion has attracted attention of many researchers and has a great impact on the health and performance of the worker. Is the lack of resources and emotional exhaustion in physical or psychological that leads to a sense of impotence, is characterized by progressive loss of energy followed by physical and mental exhaustion. Depersonalization includes the development of negative attitudes and distant to people who watch, they are now treated in a cold and impersonal. The absence of professional achievement leads to feelings of failure and reduced self-esteem. This research uses state of the art, benchmarks Maslach and Jackson, Benevides-Pereira, Tamayo, França, Fleck, Seyle, Lipp, among others. The research, based on the goals it is a descriptive study with cross-sectional quantitative approach. The strategy used for data collection was through the use of 3 objective structured questionnaire with demographic and socio-professional approach, the quality of work life through the instrument QWLQ - bref and finally the MBI to assess how professionals health work experience. For data presentation techniques we used descriptive statistics, the results of which were shown through charts and after preceded to statistical analysis using SPSS - version 13. The survey results reveal a context where health professionals from HUWC / UFC are satisfactory level of quality of work life (60,30%), highlighting the personal domain (67,58%) while the professional field reached the lowest rate (50,86%). It can be argued that these are not professional burnout, but showed moderate levels of emotional exhaustion (48,58%), depersonalization (58,19%) and low job satisfaction (53,67%). The data have revealed that a significant correlation exists between the domains of quality of work life and dimensions of burnout. Ensures that maintain and improve the health of these workers is of fundamental importance because it reflects directly on the quality of care offered to patients and in interpersonal relationships. / O trabalho na área da saúde possui valores éticos e sociais de extrema grandeza, ou seja, alívio do sofrimento e recuperação da saúde; para os profissionais o significado do trabalho é favorecer o fortalecimento da identidade. Acredita-se que promover e manter uma adequada qualidade de vida no trabalho dos profissionais da saúde beneficia a instituição na medida em que, indivíduos satisfeitos melhoram sua produtividade, revertendo, portanto, em melhoria da assistência prestada e do ambiente laboral. Este estudo objetiva investigar a relação entre a qualidade de vida no trabalho e a síndrome de burnout nos profissionais da saúde de um hospital de ensino. O esgotamento emocional tem despertado interesse de vários pesquisadores e apresenta grande impacto sobre a saúde e o desempenho do trabalhador. Consiste na falta de recursos emocionais e na exaustão física ou psicológica que leva a uma sensação de impotência, é caracterizado pela perda progressiva de energia seguida de esgotamento físico e mental. A despersonalização inclui o desenvolvimento de atitudes negativas e distantes para com as pessoas a quem assiste, elas passam a ser tratadas de maneira fria e impessoal. A ausência de realização profissional leva a sentimentos de fracasso e a redução da autoestima. Essa investigação utiliza, no estado da arte, referenciais de Maslach e Jackson, Benevides-Pereira, Tamayo, França, Fleck, Seyle, Lipp, entre outros. A pesquisa, com base nos objetivos trata-se de um estudo descritivo, com abordagem quantitativa e delineamento transversal. A estratégia utilizada para coleta de dados foi a utilização de 3 questionários estruturados com questões objetivas com abordagem sócio profissional e demográfico, o nível de qualidade de vida no trabalho através do instrumento QWLQ – bref e por último o MBI para avaliar como os profissionais da saúde vivenciam seu trabalho. Para apresentação dos dados utilizou-se as técnicas da estatística descritiva, cujos resultados foram demonstrados através de gráficos e após procedeu-se ao tratamento estatístico utilizando para a análise o software SPSS – versão 13. Os resultados da pesquisa revelam um contexto onde os profissionais da saúde do HUWC/UFC estão com níveis satisfatórios de QVT (60,30%), sobressaindo o domínio pessoal (67,58%) enquanto que o domínio profissional atingiu o menor índice (50,86%). Pode-se afirmar que esses profissionais não estão em burnout, porém apresentaram níveis moderados de exaustão emocional (48,58%), despersonalização (58,19%) e baixa realização profissional (53,67%). Os dados obtidos permitem afirmar que existe correlação significativa entre os domínios de QVT e as dimensões de burnout. Assegura-se que manter e aprimorar a saúde desses trabalhadores é de fundamental importância, pois reflete diretamente na qualidade da assistência oferecida aos pacientes e na relação interpessoal

M.A. (Clinical Psychology) / South African paramedics are thought to be exposed to a high number of critical incidents as compared to paramedics elsewhere (Ward, Lombard & Gwebushe, 2006). Therefore, South African paramedics are at particular risk of suffering from negative effects associated from the exposure to critical incidents. This study aimed to gain an in-depth understanding of the meaning which paramedics attach to the experience of “critical incidents” (Mitchell, 1983). This information may be beneficial for those working in Emergency Medical Services in South Africa to further understandings of paramedics’ experience of work related trauma. Five paramedics, sourced from both public and private ambulance service, between the ages of 27 and 36 years old, who have had between 8 to 12 years of working experience were interviewed regarding their lived experiences of critical incidents. The semi-structured interviews were transcribed and analysed based on the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) framework suggested by Smith and Osborn (2008). The analysis of each of the participant’s transcripts provided four master themes, some of which are supported by superordinate themes. The master themes are: 1) Experiencing the trauma of critical incidents, 2) Experiencing in the “World” of EMS, 3) Intrinsic factors and active attempts of coping with stress, and 4)Personal consequence of being a paramedic. For most of the participants, their narratives highlighted that the organisational variables were considered to be more important than the nature of the critical incidents they experienced. Critical incidents were deemed traumatic as there was a disparity between the participant’s expectations of what was expected and what they were confronted with in “reality”. In addition, the participants described forming an emotional bond with their patients or the patient’s family, which added to their distress. The participants’ narratives emphasised the importance of the role of the EMS organisation in influencing their experiences. Despite employing a number of coping strategies to mediate the effects of organisational as well as critical incident stress, the participants reported experiencing longterm negative psychological symptoms that have impacted on their personal and familial lives. These findings support the growing body of knowledge that demonstrates that organisational variables play an important role in either mediating or exacerbating posttrauma outcomes.
