A Place for Healing: Architecture as Intermediary Between Nature and the Healing Child

Bolen, Alexandra 10 July 2012 (has links)
This thesis investigates the difficult reality of children faced with illness, necessitating prolonged hospitalization. It takes a critical position with regard to the current approach to health care in Canada within the institution of the hospital. Through an exploration of environmental and experiential factors of proven importance to the child’s healing process, this thesis seeks to understand the role of architecture in healing. It does not presume that architecture alone has the power to heal, nor does it propose a tabula rasa approach; instead it seeks to explore the possibility of offering a complement to the current health care system, through the exploration of the potential positive physical and psychological impact of place in the healing process. Using Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada and the IWK Children’s Hospital as a context for investigation, this thesis explores the design of a satellite healthcare building situated in Point Pleasant Park (Halifax), where uninterrupted medical treatment is to be offered, supported by a home-like setting and constant contact with nature.

Gestão do projeto de edifícios hospitalares / Managment of hospitals` design process

Figueiredo, Alexandra 30 September 2008 (has links)
The hospitals present a great design complexity and construction because of his magnitude, parameters rigorous, complex functional net of facilities, need of flexibility to incorporate new medical technologies, etc. To design a hospital requests the several professionals\' participation (architects, engineers and consultants) and demand an intense collaboration among the same ones seeking to coordinate the project solutions and constructive. The common denominator among all the involved professionals is the objective of prolonging to the maximum the life cycle of the building. So that the final objective happens, with reduction of costs and inside of the stipulated period, it is necessary a previous planning, so that he settles down a logistics of information and coordination between the planners\' teams and builders. This paper has as objective explores and to characterize as specialized architecture offices in design of hospitals develops and they coordinate the different involved projects and to draw preliminary guidelines for administration of the process of project of hospitals. The methodology of proposed research is study of qualitative case in a specialized architecture office in hospitals that it uses coordination methods and planning during the process of development of the hospital. The objective is to evaluate the efficiency of the previous planning in the construction of a hospital and as this process it can aid in the durability and to improve the life cycle of the hospital.

The 21st Century Cancer Care Wellness Facility: A Study, Interpretation, and Application of 16th Century Japanese Tea-house Themes

Coffey, Shaun C. 28 January 2016 (has links)
Buildings which address space through all the senses, rather than being dominated by ocular centric considerations solely, have become the minority within the discipline of Architecture. This can create an imbalance, perceivable as feelings of estrangement and detachment for the inhabitant. Estrangement is particularly evident within health care architecture, which owes much of its current form to ideas developed during Modernism. In response to this imbalance, Architecture from the past may have lessons which can be applied. This thesis investigates the potential of applying spatial techniques and approaches learned from the 16th century Japanese tea-house. A health care building which benefits from the same kind of reflective and contemplative spaces inherent in the tea-house includes counseling facilities, and therefore an outpatient cancer care center was chosen to apply these lessons. Among the techniques researched and applied, the use of a sequential vision of spatial experience, which reveals the building in stages and facilitates spaces for pause and reflection, was particularly powerful. The result is a building with spaces that take on an almost sacred tone, where one can be at peace with the realities of their current situation, and begin thinking about the path forward. / Master of Architecture
