Effectiveness of educational computer software with hearing impaired students

Bell, Charles William January 1985 (has links)
This study addresses the effectiveness of educational microcomputer software with hearing impaired students. A review of the literature revealed a large void in the empirical research on this topic and also indicated that a lack of suitable and appropriate software, was a major hurdle to the successful use of CAI with hearing impaired students. This study investigated the effectiveness of a specific educational microcomputer program (MECC : Trapezoids and Triangles Areas) with a group of hearing impaired students. The 18 students were randomly divided into two groups. One group viewed the tutorial portion of the software and then worked with the practise section. While the other group worked only with the practise section of the software. This was done to measure and compare the effectiveness of both portions of the program. The students were carefully observed as they interacted with the computer. Problems they encountered with the software, their achievement during exposure to the software and on pre and post tests, were all recorded by the experimenter. These data were used to measure the changes that took place due to microcomputer application, to evaluate the effectiveness of this software, to make recommendations regarding the characteristics required to improve this software, and to set "guidelines" for the development of future educationally effective software for the hearing impaired. The results revealed the need for software that contains a measured and controlled level of syntax, more advanced diagnostic and remedial capabilities, and a simplified more thorough presentation of the information. This study demonstrated the need for more research related to identification of the important factors and teaching strategies which make software more educationally effective for use with hearing impaired students. / Education, Faculty of / Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS), Department of / Graduate

Twice imprisoned : loss of hearing, loss of power in federal prisoners in British Columbia

Dahl, Marilyn Olive 05 1900 (has links)
Problems experienced by individuals in institutions tend to be hidden from the public gaze. This is so for inmates of prisons where regulations and bureaucratic structure conceal the daily life situation of prisoners from public view. Anonymity and concealment are enhanced by the widespread misperception of prisoners as an homogenous group. As a result, problems of vulnerable groups, such as people with disabilities, can be ignored. One such group is prisoners with impaired hearing. This descriptive study utilized a multidisciplinary approach to investigate the problems experienced by prisoners within the context of social control. Drawing from selected literature in health, sociology and criminology, the theoretical framework merges the labelling perspective [interactionism] with macro-level theories of social control. The study provides, for the first time, an examination of the percentage, degree and social import of hearing loss in federal prisoners in the Pacific Region of the Correctional Service of Canada. Through the use of survey, audiometric measurement, and interview techniques, an examination was undertaken of the presence and implications of partial hearing loss in inmates of federal penitentiaries in British Columbia. Interview subjects were identified through hearing testing of volunteers in eight federal penitentiaries. Data were gathered through interviews with prisoners with impaired hearing, a comparison group of prisoners with normal hearing, and a selection of custodians. Of 114 prisoners screened, 69% had some degree of impaired hearing, often previously unidentified. Custodians, 86% of the time, labelled behaviours characteristic of the hard of hearing as deviant, and often aggressive, behaviours. Prisoner accounts revealed that failure to test hearing at time of incarceration has harmful effects on performance in programmes and encounters with the justice system. A social activist approach is recommended, to address structural inequalities among prisoners and barriers for prisoners in general. This work indicates that lower-class, lower-status persons may be more susceptible to negative labelling. Prisoners with partial hearing loss, due to the often invisible nature of their condition, are particularly vulnerable to negative labelling. Study recommendations include: 1] Routine hearing screening of all prisoners at time of incarceration. 2] Education of custodians to understand behaviours and communication needs of persons with impaired hearing. 3] A partnership effort between correctional services, the disabled consumer group, and professionals, to improve the situation of prisoners who are hard of hearing. / Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies / Graduate

Psychoeducational Dissemination Across Distance: The Viability of Telehealth with the Deaf Population

Wilson, Jaime A. B. 10 July 2008 (has links) (PDF)
Within the deaf population, an extreme mental health professional shortage exists that may be alleviated with videoconferencing technology – also known as telehealth. Moreover, much needed mental health education within the deaf population remains largely inaccessible. Researchers have forewarned that the deaf population may remain underserved if significant changes do not take place with traditional service delivery methods. The goal of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of telehealth in teaching psychoeducational objectives, with special emphasis given to its application to the deaf population. The results of this study indicate that telehealth can be considered to be an efficacious and cost effective option in delivering health care to the deaf population. Results also indicate participant satisfaction with the technology.
