Based on the classification from quantitative studies, total six teachers, two in each category, were interviewed to construct six individual qualitative case studies. The results suggested that teacher professional knowledge about function and beliefs about mathematics had impacts on their teaching approaches. The teaching approaches can be classified into three categories, i.e, content-centered with performance focus, contentcentered with understanding focus and student-centered with cognitive focus, which constituted traditional content-centered and student-centered perspectives on teaching approaches. Emphasizing process or product is still dichotomy for teachers. / In conclusion, this study showed the significance of subject matter knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge and beliefs about mathematics to teaching approaches of mathematics teachers, which pave the way for future education researches in this field. This study has also provided some valuable experiences in applying hypothetical situations to education researches. In the future, further explorations can be conducted in finding the effect of contextual factors to teaching approaches and how teaching approaches influenced student learning. / In past 30 years, under the global trend of curriculum reform, new requirements on teacher professional knowledge and belief were put on teachers. Accordingly, the focus of research on teaching was shifted from finding effective teaching behavior to in search for teacher professional knowledge, beliefs and cognitions behinds their behaviors. Before, the literatures on teacher professional knowledge were mainly focused on what professional knowledge that teachers have and/or should have. Only few literatures were interested in the effect of teacher professional knowledge and beliefs to teaching approaches. / The main objective of this study is to fill in the missing pieces and investigate the effect of teacher professional knowledge and mathematics beliefs on teaching for inservices mathematics teachers. Mixed method was applied in this study in order to build up some comprehensive understandings to the effects. In quantitative part, this study has surveyed ninety one high school mathematics teachers in M city to find out the deepness of professional knowledge and mathematical beliefs that teachers held. For professional knowledge, the results showed that teachers had different levels of subject matter knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge. For beliefs about mathematics, the results echoed with Ernest's (1989) classification of teacher mathematical beliefs, i.e. instrumentalist, Platonist, and problem-solver. / 張侨平. / Adviser: Ngai-Ying Wong. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 73-03, Section: A, page: . / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2010. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 184-209). / Electronic reproduction. Integrated curriculum reform in China is meant to change the traditional teaching culture. Based on the findings, it is recommended that the education authority should implement the reform in a gradual manner and takes cultural changes into consideration. It is also essential to support the reconstruction of teachers' beliefs and their professional identities. / The education system of Mainland China has been dominated by the discipline-based curriculum. One of the major curriculum reform initiatives launched in September, 2001, is curriculum integration. Two new integrated curricula, "Science" and "History and Society" are implemented in junior secondary schools in the experimental zones. The ideology and teaching approach of these new integrated curricula differ from teachers' usual classroom practices. To what extent are the integrated curricula implemented? How have teachers' beliefs changed? What are the factors shaping these changes? / The study reveals that the deep and core belief of teachers is very stable. The factors influencing teachers' belief changes included the personal experience of teachers, the school environment and the societal context. During the reform, teachers were trapped in two contradictory discourses, one treasured humanistic values fostering personal growth, while the other emphasized standard examination and competition. Facing two paradoxical educational value stances, teachers experienced serious conflicts in their educational beliefs, and their professional identities were challenged. The changes of belief reflect the process of adapting and adjusting to their new roles in the education system. / This study, from a cultural-personal perspective, aimed to show teachers' beliefs and their changes. In this study, two schools and fourteen teachers were chosen to be studied. Ethnographic research methods, including in-depth interview, field observation and document analysis were adopted to inquire into teachers' collective daily experiences, their beliefs and their changes, and factors shaping the changes in beliefs. / 張爽. / 呈交日期: 2006年11月. / 論文(哲學博士)--香港中文大學, 2007. / 參考文獻(p. 369-384). / Cheng jiao ri qi: 2006 nian 11 yue. / Adviser: Lam Chi Chung. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 68-08, Section: A, page: 3270. / Electronic reproduction. 中學教師的可持續發展教育信念: 一個量表發展的探索性研究. / Secondary teachers' beliefs about education for sustainable development: an exploratory study to develop an instrument for measuring ESD beliefs / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection / Zhong xue jiao shi de ke chi xu fa zhan jiao yu xin nian: yi ge liang biao fa zhan de tan suo xing yan jiu.

In 2002, the United Nations designates 2005-2014 as the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development. In China, Education for Sustainable Development [ESD] has been recognized as an important component in the new educational reform. However, there is an implementation gap between government policy and classroom practice. Teachers play a pivotal role in curriculum implementation. Therefore, knowing what teachers' think about ESD is the first step towards understanding the implementation of ESD. / Key words. sustainable development; education for sustainable development; teacher's belief; geography teacher; instrument development; values; teaching belief; China / Quantitative research methods supported by interview are used in this research. After analyzing relevant literature on ESD and interviewing 16 Beijing geography teachers, it is found that the ESD beliefs comprised two components: sustainability values [VESD] and teaching beliefs of ESD [TESD]. Based on ESD principles and some environmental beliefs instruments, a first draft of VESD instrument was developed and piloted among Yinchuan and Beijing geography teachers. A second draft was then developed and tested with over 300 Guangzhou and Changchun geography teachers. The final VESD instrument with four dimensions has been found with a stable structure and acceptable reliability and validity. These four dimensions are respect and care for the community of life; ecological integrity; social and economic justice; democracy, nonviolence and peace. / The aim of this research is to develop an effective and easy-to-use ESD instrument to reveal teacher's beliefs about ESD. In the process of developing the instrument, it is essential to study: What are teachers' ESD beliefs? Are ESD beliefs made up environmental values and teaching beliefs? What are the structure and content of the values and teaching beliefs of ESD? / The TESD instrument is found to have three factors with good reliability and validity. These three factors are namely: relevance to daily life, student's need in the future, and integrated teaching. / With these two instruments which can be used to tap teacher's ESD beliefs in China, researchers interested in ESD implementation can conduct future researches on teachers' beliefs about ESD and the potential implementation problems. / 楊光. / 論文(哲學博士)--香港中文大學, 2006. / 參考文獻(p. 256-274). / Adviser: Chi Chung Lam. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 68-03, Section: A, page: 0867. / Electronic reproduction.
