Formation et premiers développements de la commanderie de Dunhuang sous les Han occidentaux (IIème et Ier siècle av. J.-C.) / First steps to office of the Western Han commandery of Dunhuang (2nd – 1st century BCE)

Bertrand, Arnaud 20 December 2017 (has links)
This dissertation centers on the history, archeology and historical geography of Early China. It examines the steps of establishment of the imperial commanderies founded in the vicinity of the Western Han dynasty boundaries (206 BCE – 9 AD). At the turn of the second and the first centuries BCE, the imperial strategical efforts made to stabilize of newly conquered territories passed through a complex system. Starting from the military occupation il lead to the migration of populations from the center of the empire. Focusing on Dunhuang (Gansu Province) – the westernmost commandery established with the Empire borders – we follow at regional scale those strategies of conquest and occupation. In addition of various fieldwork performed by the author, this research is based on a different approach of the Dynastic Histories, the use of archaeological data and the exploitation of untrodden epigraphic material. By using a new methodology, we have managed to individualize its development within a territory located at the crossroads of commercial and diplomatic highways with the Central-Asian kingdoms and cultures. As a result of its cartography and chronology being put up to date, we have obtained a complete revision of the first steps of organization of the main military and civilian centers of Dunhuang.

Den rätta tidens mått : Göthiska förbundet, fornforskningen och det antikvariska landskapet

Molin, Torkel January 2003 (has links)
The ideas that flourished among a small group of former Uppsala students that became the Göthiska förbundet on February 16, 1811, set in motion a process that changed views on why and how Sweden should manage its historic sites. This process of change achieved its goal with the passing of the new antiquities legislation in 1828. Their archeological research also left its mark. In this area, the brotherhood went much further than they themselves had actually imagined possible when they formulated their description of the ideal state consisting of free, independent farmers, which they believed was the case up until the introduction of Christianity into the Nordic countries. It was this period that they attributed the brotherhood’s virtues that they wished to instill in modern Swedes, and it was this image that would become part of the Swedish cultural heritage. Their archeological research, though, took them even further back in time. Geijer’s history books were admirable, but Magnus Bruzelius went the furthest. Starting with a study of historic sites, he extended the time period about which one could comment at great length, going as far back as to a period that did not even have a name, a period he called the Stone Age. As a result of this, their research demonstrated that the region’s oldest historic sites did not belong to sword-wielding free farmers, but rather to primitive Stone Age savages about whose living conditions Magnus Bruzelius could write because he was able to study their material remains and compare his findings with the commentaries by travelers to primitive peoples from other, more inaccessible parts of the globe. Accordingly, both time and research achieved new heights. / digitalisering@umu

King, cities, and elites in Macedonia c. 360-168 BC

Raynor, Benjamin January 2014 (has links)
This thesis investigates the nature of the relationship between cities and king in the late Classical and Hellenistic Macedonian kingdom. It will consider the cities from two main perspectives: the city as a community, and the city as a settlement. Section 1 re-examines the evidence most commonly used to argue for the Macedonian cities gaining substantial autonomy in this period. It will be argued that this evidence has less to tell us about the political autonomy of the Macedonian cities than their 'social relations' with other Greek communities: Macedonian cities engaged in international exchanges which did not represent any challenge to the authority of the monarch, but which could also be used to represent the relationship between king and city as cooperative. Such latitude was balanced, however, by forceful expressions of royal dominance in other arenas. Section 2 considers the position of the cities within the royal economy, and examines how, as a result of the king's monopolisation of Macedonia's resources, and the fact that the Macedonian elite was more interested in advancing their position at court than acting as civic benefactors, the cities were left economically subordinated to the king. Section 3 uses the increasingly abundant archaeological evidence to consider how royal building programmes served to project royal ideology into the localities. Royal palaces, large-scale urban development, and fortifications created an experience of urban space in Macedonia which emphasised the roles of the monarch as guardian, benefactor, and unifying figure. The picture that emerges is of a kingdom of civic communities which were engaged in meaningful exchanges with their peers outside Macedonia, but which were living in large and impressive urban settlements which stood as monuments to the extent and ubiquity of royal authority. Late-Classical and Hellenistic Macedonia was a kingdom of poleis, but that kingdom was first and foremost a royal space.

AUTISTIC ADULTS AND THEIR INTERSECTIONS: AN ANTHROPOLOGICAL APPROACH TO CULTURAL CONCEPTIONS OF DISABILITY IN INDIGENOUS, CAMPESINOS AND URBAN FAMILIES IN COLOMBIA

Adriana Catalina Garcia Acevedo (10789695) 13 May 2021 (has links)

This ethnographic project delves into the spheres of life of three autistic adults and their families. This thesis analyzes their experiences, current routines, and personal and family narratives about what it means to be an autistic adult across different identities and geographies. This thesis also identifies forms of knowledge that arise in these life experiences and shape strategies, decisions, or attitudes taken to navigate through life or overcome possible difficulties in their present and futures. This research takes place in Colombia, a diverse country and engages with anthropology of the everyday, sensory anthropology and disability studies.
